A beginners experience in League of Legends

Hi Riot,

1. New players wont have access to all summoner spells and masteries This is like people trying football for the first time but since they are new, they are not allowed to have a keeper and they have to wear flip flops, while their experienced opponents fucking demolish their team. But hey, at least you can ghost and heal to safety.

2. New players have to be level 10 to use the practice tool Cause God forbit them getting better at the game before entering competitive gameplay

3. Players that aren't new but creates a new account can click a field stating that they are experienced players That does not keep Riot from forcing you to play vs bots for 5 hours - not learning anything a damn thing.

I hope you will look into this someday cause this might be why your dropout rate has increased significantly for that past 8 months.

Ok, bye

Please you think Riot will ever get off their lazy asses and do something legit for new players.

For a beginner this isn't really a problem. When I started LoL (about 9 months ago) I did not realize there were runes or even other spells to use, I had no idea what was going on until I got to level 20 or so and started to understand the game better.

For a SMURF this is a problem (or solution?). I like this system because it discourages Smurfs to continue on there account because of how frustrating the experience can be without spells or runes ESPECIALLY against other smurfs how are level 10 and above. I know this does not stop smurfs from being created (I am guilty of one myself because of I got banned, I haven't used it since) but It should help the new players from not being crushed all the time and can reduce the amount of SMURFS allowing more fresh players to join the wonderful community!

The best part of the new player experience definitely has to be with the new rune system; you unlock the ability to make your whole 2 rune pages at level 11 but can only change your keystone rune. All the smaller runes unlock at level 13 or at level 15 even. So you're stuck with the preset runes until level 11 and then don't even get access to the full rune system until level 15.

Honestly, they should just ask at the very beginning when someone signs up "Would you like a learning account?"

Then, if the player answers "yes," they can go through the leveling process, most likely with other new players. "No" responses could just start at level 30 with runes unlocked.

This would reduce about 90% of raging smurfs in the newbie games. Most of these individuals aren't the "special" kind that rerolls for the explicit purpose of trashing nubs. The vast majority of them are just rerolling their account because their main was banned (probably for toxicity), and they just want to get to 30 ASAP. Give them a one-click button to get them out of the newbie area.

Those people just buy accounts for less than the cost of epic skins.

If I remember correctly (it's been over 3 years), they asked me when I created this account if I was new or a veteran. I managed to do okay, and got pretty flattered when I got accused of smurfing.

well then you would create another problem, noobs in 30s games.

Nah, that would massively increase the trolls that hit level 30 and go ranked. Smurfs and banned players would just instantly play again.

Wish the straight to level 30 was a thing when i started... But wouldnt there be alot of newbies in the ranked game because alot of ppl would choose to skip to level 30

This is why they don't just give everything at once. A genuine new player isn't going to care about being short summoners because they're still trying to figure out how to play in general. And your analogy doesn't work since both team will be short summoner spells and of similar skill level.

Dont you have to play like 4 games Before being able to pvp?

sardonisms1 votes

Nope.

ETA: IIRC you unlock PvP blind pick after you complete the tutorial, which gets you to level 3 or 4 and involves only one actual (bot) game.

Riot knows its players are some of the dumbest, least competent players in the gaming industry. They dont believe that you'll be able to "handle" googling the best runes for your champion or the role or the mind-bending "flash" spell.

So smurfs can start with all spells without working out for it? No thanks. Also, who doesnt like grinding a bit? Having all unlocked is too easy

This and players making new accounts and being assholes. I think I am quitting as well.

I think the core takeaway here is that, while it is indeed important to properly guide new players, especially in a complicated game like League, doing so via hard restrictions and railroading is just about the worst way of going about things. The limits imposed on summoner spells and masteries are completely arbitrary, and serve only to force newer players into weaker builds so that they get bodied even harder at the start. Worse still, it often teaches the wrong things to players, as it pushes them to play in a manner that is completely different from the way League actually gets played. This itself is compounded by the bot games players are pushed into, because bots don't jungle. It may not be quite as bad as Thornmail on Ashe, but it's the same kind of terrible tutorial design that forces even more of a learning barrier onto new players, because they have to unlearn a ton of bad habits in addition to re-learning the whole game in order to play properly. Moreover, the restrictions themselves feel terrible, so the system altogether feels like it's more likely to push players away from League, instead of facilitating onboarding. I'm looking forward to the revamped new player experience Riot is proposing, but if it's going to continue imposing arbitrary restrictions upon newer players, it's going to fall flat on its face.

Wait you have to be level 10 to use the practice tool? WTF even is Rito doing?
