Riot has no idea what they're doing with Sightstone

10/29 PBE update

Riot earlier this year: "We don't want Ruby Sightstone to feel like an upgrade that's needed to be rushed for supports"

Riot on PBE: Lets remove one stack from Sightstone and give the one stack back with the Sightstone upgrades so they will be forced to upgrade to take it to make Sightstone worth it in comparison to the upgraged trinket (Which is now free).

Also limits the support mage's itemization by removing twin shadows. Now they have to choose Vision or Utility. Meanwhile Tank support items still all provide tank stats no matter which way you go.

I didn't read anything about Twin Shadows being removed. There are lots of updates though so I might have over looked it. Could you link that update to me? I was under the impression that Frost Queen was just sharing the active and you would have to choose one or the other.

Twin shadows was removed but the active is replacing Frost Queen's. So instead of having 2 items you could build on the Utility support you only have one, plus you have to choose Frost Queen or the Upgraded Sightstone. Although Trinkets now give 2 wards so I'll probably stop buying Sightstone.

  1. the trinket has twice the cd of live on pbe, so sightstone is still superior
  2. the point of sightstone is mostly to free up the trinkedspot, so you can take an oracles lense to not only provide vision, but also deny it.

#Vision controll is not only about providing vision, but also denying it!

Too bad the sightstone has terrible gold efficiency for health and literally provides no other bonuses.

the other sightstone upgrades arn't statefficient aswell, and reduced active cd on a support is pretty damn nice

Aye, but now we have the option to forgo our support item active to save an item slot.

Wouldn't do that for talisman, but might be worth it on FQC.

At least we can make choices now with what we do with it, rather than sightstone just being... there.

You are forgetting that trinket will now standard have 2 charges. That is an awesome upgrade. All this does is allows supports extra options for build paths and it is a really good plan really. I can't wait to start building Eye of the Watcher on my AP supports.

Not really supports will still need Sightstone because of the vision that it gives, the problem is that you will be required to upgrade your sightstone to have the same functionality as live + some stuff from the items. It will make you be forced to upgrade Sightstone. So less build path possible.

Umm...but now SS can be combined with gp10 item or be a separate item...I mean SS was always required for supports even since its release. I'm not sure what your point is here.

I meant Riot forcing you to UPGRADE Sightstone even though they said they didn't want supports to feel that they are being forced to upgrade it.

you feel forced to upgrade? I'm a support main and I can say with confidence that I do not feel pressured at all to upgrade SS with these changes. If anything, I'm happy that I have more options with SS now and Ruby actually has some merit.

I'm a support main myself too and I do feel forced to upgrade because I will not have the same amount of wards availlable as I have on live. Considering I really like the 4 stacks I feel forced to upgrade. It just doesn't make sence for me to nerf Sightstone for no reason. I do like Ruby is worth the upgrade though.

Meh, that extra ward just got moved over to the trinket is all. Remember the CD and duration of trinket wards scale with level. Instead of having 4 wards and 1 recharging ward now we get 3 and 2 recharging wards. I mean, if you like going back to fountain all the time to recharge SS I guess you can but I for one am going to be abusing the heck out of having rechargeable wards. That said, I think sweepers are in an awkward spot with vision being so easy and sweepers not really getting a huge buff like the yellow trinket.

Vision is becoming harder because sight wards are deleted. The only way to get them are Sightstone and the trinket. Sweeper will be really strong especially in competitive. Btw if you are getting both Sightstone and the yellow trinket you're doing something wrong, supports are not only about getting vision but also denying it.
