Why the Champion restrictions on Chest gains?

So we finally got Hextech Crafting too, over on EUW and i've been loving it. However i don't really understand why we can only earn one chest per champ PER SEASON.

I can understand the restrictions in regards to the weeky chest drops, but why restrict which champions you are eligble to play with to earn chests? Especially since you can still earn chests just by your teammates doing good, so the argument of getting more S ranks with your main doesnt matter either.

Why am i not allowed to just stick with my favorite champions to earn chests? o.o

It's a soft encouragement for players to master (or at least play) more champions, and thus become comfortable in more roles and better players overall (learning other champions definitely helps you learn to play with and against them).

Also, it helps that chests are purely optional. If you want to play only your favorite few champions, then more unlocks probably don't mean that much to you, so the lesser number of unlock opportunities isn't as punishing as it would be to the new players who wants to experience and play EVERYTHING in the game.

RIot Points

Guess it's riot's way of encouraging people to play MORE champions and/or in groups: if you're a god-tier lee (or whathever, just had him in mind since if you're good at him you can easily get an s with all his tools) you will probably play almost only him right? If you want those chests though you gotta either play with someone else who plays a lot of champs (and is damn good at them) or you yourself start playing more champs, widening this way the champion pools a bit. It might feel unfair to one trick ponies, but I find it a good thing riot is always trying to get us to play with friends and to widen our champion pools. Pretty sure there are OTHER reasons we might all know (like forcing people who play alone and/or only one champ to buy the chests since they won't get many of them) but let's just stick with the "wideninig the diversity of champions in games" and "playing with friends".
