Deathfire Touch and its Interaction With DOT

Deathfire Touch has been driving me insane since its release. I love the keystone, think it's fantastic, but the way it deals with DOT makes absolutely no sense.

Deathfire touch can deal damage on three different "classes" of abilities: AOE, DOT, and everything else. Mages with Damage Over Time (specifically Brand Malzahar Anivia ) are AMAZINGLY strong right now because I believe DFT does not work properly with them. With both an Area of Effect and DOT, DFT deals half damage over half the duration, which I am sure we are all aware. With AOE this makes sense, the ability to apply the keystone to multiple enemy players with a single ability requires that ability deal less damage, in this case HALF damage. However, if you divide the damage AND THE DURATION in half, the damage per second of the ability remains the same. Similarly 2/4 = 1/2. Our DPS is a measure of damage over time so dividing both by two keeps the value the same. For AOE the DPS being the same matters very little because the damage is cut in half, the duration from a single ability ends, and the damage stops. Damage Over Time abilities, however, continues to apply DFT over and over and over meaning that it doesn't MATTER what the duration of DFT is, all that matters is how much damage is being dealt each second. So when brand uses an ability, DFT gets applied over and over dealing the same amount of damage per second that it would for a normal ability, but instead of stopping at the normal 3 seconds, it gets reapplied until the ability damage has ended and THEN AND ONLY THEN do you get the "reduced" damage of having the duration only be for 1.5 seconds. Because Deathfire Touch continues to get reapplied, as it should, on Damage Over Time abilities, it needs to deal less damage per second. Shortening the duration of the ability means nothing when the duration is constantly refreshed. If the numbers were changed just so that the damage was cut in half without the duration changing ("Area of effect and damage over time abilities apply half of this damage over 3 seconds instead) the damage of DFT would remain the same for AOE abilities and would be cut in half for DOTs. This is why our DOT mages are so strong.

I hope this was clear XD It's been driving me nuts that no one had said anything about it other than "Brand is OP with DFT" because both of them together is a beautiful thing, the numbers just don't make any sense.

Also while I have you, can I just mention that DFT not applying on Darius passive makes no sense. Obviously he will be much much stronger if it does apply, but his passive works exactly like Brand's passive with a slight change on what causes it. It makes little sense for one to apply and not the other.

Add Swain to that list of mages with DFT craziness.

He's utterly disgusting with DFT.

Excellent analysis of why the mastery is flawed. Well said.

Death Fire Grasp: Your damaging abilities cause enemy champions to take 6 + 50% of your Bonus Attack Damage and 20% of your Ability Power in Magic damage over 3 seconds (Area of effect and damage over time abilities apply half of this damage over 1.5 seconds instead). You have to mentally figure out which abilities are benefiting from it. like you said, sometimes it also applies to passive abilities. Using you examples here: Brands Passive kicks in with the use of ANY of his abilities, so it works with any hit of his Q/W/E/R Combo. Meaning that anything Brand does other than AA triggers the passive. Darius however... Darius's** basic attacks** and damaging abilities cause enemies to bleed for 5 seconds. Darius only has 2 damaging abilities, which are his Q and his R. So only THOSE 2 abilities trigger the mastery. Why not the W? Because the W isn't a damaging ability, its an Empowered AA. That's the reason why DFG Applies to one passive and not the other.

Should it matter what applies the passive though? Passives should either count as abilities or they should not. If it mattered what caused them, should Darius bleed proc DFT when his Q procs the passive? A single Darius Q into bleed is exactly the same as a single Brand Q into burn.

It matter because the passives themselves dont proc the Mastery, they just deal extra damage because of it. So while every one of his abilities proc it because they DO deal damage, only the Q on darius would proc it because its his ONLY damage

...I just destroyed a Brand with DFT. It's not broken... it might be a little powerful from what ur saying, however. My own experience doesn't mean much.

Brand, Malzahar, and Anivia currently have the three highest mid lane win rates in the game. Brand has the fourth highest win rate in the game. Win rate doesn't mean everything, but he is currently much too strong.

There's always someone with the highest win rate... though that is quite suspicious.

Brand + item 2033 + item 3092 + DFT: OP and Insane amounts of gold.

In that case they should make DFT apply on-hit, which isn't a bad idea considering it also scales with AD (talking about Darius )...

Like this theTwitch can fulfill their wet dreams.

Had to start banning Brand every game. Mostly cuz... he's IN every game unless I don't ban him.
