How does Riot assign grades?

Okay so I've seen some really weird stuff, people getting S after feeding and getting a few assists, people going perfect and carrying getting no S (I'll get back to this) and I've come to the conclusion that I have no clue how riot assigns these scores. I just played a game where i carried the game and did really well. I went 15/0/8, participated in all kills but 5, did the most damage to champs, had the most gold, and so on. I got an A+. Now on my same team was an Ahri who went 8/3/7, and she got an S-. The only places she outperformed me were in wards killed, vision wards bought and farm (I was the jungler). I'm not saying she didn't deserve an S, I'm just wondering if wards killed and farm are essentially the only things that matter? Also, I've done far worse with similar farm and no Pink wards and gotten an S for those games, so what gives? Someone please explain. As long as someone gets an S on my team it's fine, i don't really care if it's me, but i want to understand.

Grades are given are a percentile basis based on your performance compared to all other performances on that particular champion played in that particular role, rather than on an absolute basis with particular numerical requirements for each grade. That means a top tier performance on one champ in one role might be an S grade, but the exact same performance (in terms of kda, cs, wards placed, etc.) on a different champ and/or in a different role might only be a B if the community on the whole is performing better on that champ/role combo.

Exactly how they determine 'performance' is a secret, but it takes into a whole bunch of things, not just kda. So participation in taking objectives and warding (both clearing and placing) are all important in addition to kda and cs, and there's bound to be various other factors too. Just remember you're only being compared to other people on the same champion in the same role though, so looking at the stats of someone on a different champ in a different role won't actually give much insight into the requirements to get an S rank yourself, as performance standards vary widely from champ to champ and role to role.

They're very tight-lipped on how it's calculated so people don't abuse the system and play in a certain way to get a good grade but not necessarily to win. Here's some of my best guesses based on my experience:

  • Everything is relative to both other players using the same role and champion.
  • On the same note, everything is relative to how well YOUR TEAM has done. So if you have 10 kills, but your team has 50, you're likely to get a worse grade than if you have every one of your team's 4 kills.
  • I expect that damage dealt/taken/healed is compared to number of deaths, so if your damage/death is higher than your champ's actual HP you're doing well.
  • Same thing but for deaths/time spent dead per game.

Plus it changes for every individual champ in every individual role, so it really could be immensely complicated, but nothing's certain about it.

The knowledge of how the system works is not available specifically because RIOT doesn't want players gaming the system. Speculate at your own risk. You will not be able to determine a reliable pattern based solely on the statistics available in the post game lobby. That is the most common mistake players make and the number one reason players post about not understanding how the grading system works. I realize that you want to understand how it works. Many players do. But at this point in time, no one who really knows is saying. Good Luck and Have Fun on the Fields of "Justice"

Okay, so the average Diana player in the jungle is just an unstoppable god the likes of which i have never seen. If i ever do get an S on Diana (seems unlikely at this point) I'll just have to compare the games. I guess i was under the impression the grade was determined by either role alone or by how well others did in that game. Now at least i know it's unknown on purpose and that I'll almost certainly never know. Thanks people!

Actually they are not, but they take many objectives, high cs & high kills presence. I main Diana, not a top tier player, but I play her well, as I got many S on diana, I can tell you that my average buildings taken is around 5 or 6, my average drakes around 4, my average nashors 1, and my average score of kills around 10 deaths around 3 assists around 12. (On the games I've got S- or more). (PS: I always have best vision score also around 50)
