The truth about chat bans/ranked restrictions.

The Ire of Cho··2 votes·1,210 views

So, many of you seem to believe that the tribunal is a useful application and that your guilt/innocence when it comes to chat bans and ranked restrictions is judged based on a group of your peers.

To let you know, chat bans and ranked restrictions have absolutely nothing to do with anyone else judging you. These things are handed out through an automated system that takes into account your reports, nothing more. If you get many reports, even if they are for absolutely nothing, you will get chat banned. If you're getting reported in ranked, you'll get chat bans and ranked restrictions. You do not need to be guilty, you need only to be reported a lot.

I tested this theory myself, and after perhaps 10 games, found myself getting chat restrictions, and ranked restrictions, while saying practically nothing in-game at all, aside from giving directions (such as telling someone to push a certain lane while someone else did this, etc), and I certainly said nothing that warranted a ban. No foul language, no verbal abuse, no trolling.

I have tested this over numerous accounts, even. That said, someone should probably rage at RIOT until they fix this, considering that nobody enjoys getting chat bans, and certainly not ranked restrictions, since normal isn't even worth playing. May want to keep your chat to a minimum and do practically nothing so that you aren't feeding, just to avoid nonsensical reports that'll get you restricted for nothing.

Good day.

How do you even "test this theory myself" unless you convinced all your friends to report you WHILE BEING POSITIVE. Literally the only way to reliably test that would be to queue with multiple friends/own accounts and get them all to report you while being positive/neutral.

Otherwise, I've not been chat or ranked restricted even in games where my only chat was screaming Sion quotes at people. Unless you are actually being negative you won't get restrictions.

As I mentioned to the first responder. Simply call a lane and stick with it... and let your team know that you're sticking with it. More people rage and care about mid, so I'd go with that, if you're attempting to test this yourself. You'll get reported by almost everyone on your team, and a number of the opposing team will report you as well. Though this game has been call since beta, many of the newer players seem to believe that "pick order" is a rule, and they'll call you a noob for not knowing it's a rule, because RIOT said so, and then they'll give you a link to a forum post, a release, where RIOT specifically states that they are NOT making pick order a rule. Unfortunately the people posting these lack the reading comprehension required, and so "pick order" has spread like wildfire amongst the lower skilled players. Pointing this out will definitely get you reported as well. People dislike being shown that they're uneducated sheep.

This guy was a toxic fuck, but I have seen someone who did this experiment with 2 other friends. They all muted each chat completely and reported each other after every game. At first only two accounts got 5 game chat restrictions, but after a while all of the accounts were given chat restrictions. It genuinely doesn't matter whether you're toxic or not, only if you're consistently reported. Now it's kind of hard to get consistently reported if you're not being toxic, but it is possible. That's what the Tribunal was for.

THIS guy, as in myself? If so... we've never played, so I'm thinking that you're mistaken about who you're referring to, especially when I'm very careful NOT to be toxic in a futile attempt to avoid ranked restrictions.

But... if you read the responses I gave to the others, it's rather easy to get reported if you call a lane (and if called first, stick to it). It's not breaking any rules, but you'll get most of your team reporting you, and just because they say to report you, many of the other team will do so as well.

You broke rule #1 of the Summoner's Code. "Being a good team player begins at champion select. Be open minded when considering the needs of your team. If you're the last one to pick, try to fill a niche in your team that hasn't already been filled." You were a complete asshole to your team and completely shirked off your responsibility to use teamwork.

Pick order isn't a hard iron rule in every situation. You're not forced to conform to the meta, but you are forced to try to work with your team. There's a big difference between "Only mid idc report me" and "I really like mid lane better than any other. I'm most experienced playing as and against mid lane champions. I'm sorry if it shakes up our comp, but just trust that I'm trying to do what's best for the team, ok?".

If your team unanimously agrees that what you're doing is detrimental to the team despite that, you deserve the reports. What's even more important than breaking rule #1 in the summoner's code is breaking the most important rule of all: You intentionally made your team's experience worse.

Well, you're very wrong. I was a good team player. I communicated my intentions to go mid, and as I'd called it first, held to it. Giving up my position is not being a bad team player. That's like telling someone they're greedy just because they aren't willing to give their money away. Not a very solid argument there.

It's not my job to coddle teammates to make them feel all warm and cozy... I'm not, and never will be, a carebear coddler. As for the team unanimously agreeing, that doesn't happen unless everyone gets the role that they desire. If they unanimously disagree, again, not my problem. The majority of the time that the team raises a fuss is because I won't follow "pick order", which is a bronze concept that only bronzies really follow. As I said, it's been call since beta, and it's all I'll ever go by. The fact that you think I deserve the reports only shows that you'd be one of the bad kids adding to the report spam headed my way for supposedly breaking a rule.

The sad part is, people like you do this, and don't even realize how ignorant or carebear you are in doing so. Reporting because someone went to a lane they called? Rather pathetic, to be honest. It's not NOT working with the team, so it doesn't follow that code you seem to love so dearly, and so blindly. But then again, you can't really argue with someone that doesn't have the intelligence to think for themselves... it's like trying to talk sense to a rock. You give logical facts or debate points, and they just say "her der summoners code".

On top of everything else, I could care less about RIOT. I've lost over 10 accounts because of their idiocy... allowing an automated system to perma-ban accounts... it's ridiculous and shows a huge lack of responsibility and accountability on their part.

Now, if you don't have anything that is NOT childish to say, feel free to respond. However, if you're just going to bring bronze simple-minded stupidity to the table, I think that everyone involved would rather not have to read it.

I wonder if there's even an argue under all this ad hominen. Let's find out.

Giving up my position is not being a bad team player.

No, being a complete asshole by going against your team's interests is. Moving on.

It's not my job to coddle teammates

Yup, it is. It's right there in the summoner's code and the support articles. You're supposed to create a good experience for your team, and not doing so leads directly to punishment. Moving on.

it's all I'll ever go by

Riot has stated multiple times that a major problem of the toxicity is people not realizing they're wrong because they've always been that way. Just because something was acceptable in another context does not mean it's acceptable in this context.

It's not NOT working with the team,

Team tells you that someone ahead of you called mid, and you ignore them despite all protest. Not really sure how that's not "not working with the team".

I could care less about RIOT

No one cares what you think about Riot. Riot has the ultimate decision on how people get punished and for what.

I guess you're a bit blind, which doesn't surprise me considering the blatant lack of intelligence you're showing everyone.

My statement clearly said if I call it first. Not bothering to respond further to your idiocy.

disregardable1 votes

So, no response whatsoever. I get it, but out of sheer curiosity, why do you think "calling it first" supercedes pick order? Your team clearly doesn't believe it, and like I said "Just because something was acceptable in another context does not mean it's acceptable in this context." So why do you keep blindly repeating it (as you would say) like it's the only valid way to go?

Riot officially endorsed pick order over call order for draft lobbies several years ago.

Although actually it's "talk to your team and try to work it out, and multiple people want the same role go by pick order".

On top of everything else, I could care less about RIOT. I've lost over 10 accounts because of their idiocy... allowing an automated system to perma-ban accounts... it's ridiculous and shows a huge lack of responsibility and accountability on their part.

Permanent bans are always hand-reviewed by Riot staff. I don't think the problem is them.

I've gotten reported for just doing bad in lane. This is a common issue, and I think it should be addressed.

Actually, it does. There is no one reviewing cases. It's simply a matter of report quantity. If you get reported enough, the automated system punishes. It's that simple.

That is entirely false. I have been reported in games where I wasn't doing that great in lane and the game was lost. In theses games I said purely informational messages, nothing more and got warnings and restrictions. Riot does't even have access to the in game chat since the tribunal is down. I have proof of this too, it can be brought forth upon request. Moreover, this is an issue, and it should be reconditioned.

Krigjer1 votes

How did you test this theory if you did nothing to provoke your teammates? How do you know they were reporting you?

The Ire of Cho1 votes

It's rather easy to get people to report you. You don't really need to do anything other than NOT go with the crowd. For example, you can generate a lot of reports by calling a lane and sticking to it, regardless of them screaming "pick order" at you. It gets anyone and everyone that believes in "pick order" to report you. Doesn't matter what happens in-game, the chat, the scores, the outcome, etc. All irrelevant. Almost everyone will report you simply for calling a lane, and sticking to it. No rules broken, but get a lot of reports. Easy to test.

I have been reported in games where I say purely informational messages: drag/baron timers, flash timers, etc. Nothing more and I get a warning. I contacted Riot support, but they literally did not answer 1 of my questions, they gave me what seemed to be automated messages in return to my inquiries. They also used the term, "We've investigated your account" to see your "toxicity" levels had increased. They also proceed to inform me that with the tribunal down they don't even have access to in game chat! This system is broken and it's frustrating when you get reported for Verbal Abuse after losing a game.

Absolutely. I've played since beta and had numerous issues with RIOT, whether with their idea of punishment for my account, accounts getting stolen, trying to recover them, etc. Their typical response, almost 100% of the time, is to send some automated idiocy that has absolutely nothing to do with the message you sent them.

I had an account stolen, provided all of the details they wanted. When I pointed out that I provided everything for them, and that they're still asking for the same information that I just gave them, rather than giving my account back to me, they then switched it around and perma-banned my account, saying that I'd been sharing it with someone else which was against the Eula. I don't share my information with anyone. Nobody has ever been given the passwords to any of my accounts. They simply didn't want to give my account back.

To be honest, they make hundreds of thousands a year just banning accounts, whether they deserve it or not. People make new accounts because, though they hate RIOT for being useless and not knowing how to moderate, they really enjoy the game. And of course... the new account has to have new skins, since your others are perma'd along with your other account.

It's all just a bunch of automated nonsense, really. Personally, I think that verbal abuse shouldn't even be ban-worthy, whether I use it or not. There IS a mute function. People have the option to use it.

Hi, I support your thread and I encourage you to write a formal complaint here :

https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=4584

I would recommend the category Games & Features / Feedback

Feel free to take inspiration from my complaint :

"I'm honestly getting tired of how ridiculously easy you guys are throwing games restrictions around. LoL is supposed to be an E-sports, and sports in general are meant to be competitive. With that being said It infuriates me that I'm restricted for taunting my opponents. Do you think the sport of boxing would be the same if it weren't for the fighters ego, their self belief and the occasional taunting of the opponents ? It would be understandable if I were throwing around racial slurs or afking during games, but all that I'm doing is taunting my opponent in the spirit of competition. Should I be punished because my opponents feel angry after losing ? You should really make it harder to report people, so if something actually bothers them they'll take the time to go online and write a formal complaint. Pressing a button after the game is over is just too simple. Whenever the players lose, they just click the button and all of a sudden they feel better because they feel some sort of justification. Please for the sake of competitive E-sports, fix the system. "

Let's try and get some change going :)

It's definitely an issue. RIOT doesn't really care about the customer base though... it's been that way for years. They've always had horrible customer service too. They likely always will. The League community is filled primarily of trolls and carebears, so they spend more time whining about real issues, or at the people bringing them up, than they do actually being useful.
