Ryze Tear Stacking Trick Gone?

So with the new Ryze buffs I decided to bring back Ryze into my champion pool since I really enjoyed him during season 4 play until his huge Q nerf. I've been told in the past there was a trick to stack tear by Q'ing a minion right when the minion dies to an auto attack which would then act like the spell had cast and therefore give tear stacks. This was used by TPA Toys, Scarra, and many other pros in the past so I thought I should learn it myself when I decided to pick Ryze back up. When both my friend who had used this trick before and I tried it however, it didn't work and not only with q but all spells. When was this removed exactly because I can't find anything about it in the patch notes.

If you spend the mana, you should have the tear stacks. It has nothing to do with hitting the target or not.

Besides, why would you auto attack to last hit and then Q, rather than just Q'ing for the last hit...?

The trick was a way to stack tear with procing q right as the minion died and therefore "casting" the spell but not costing mana because the spell fizzled out because there was no target anymore. This means with the auto you get the last hit kill and gold and right as it dies you also proc a q which stacks the tear but doesn't fully cast the spell and therefore does not cast mana. Is the requirement to stack tear now the use of mana or the casting of spells?
