Blue Essence, a review in numbers

Hello,

The Blue essence system has been a hot topic. Riot have presented their numbers in this: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/hAaYMrEs-leveling-and-rewards-early-impressions-and-adjustments and this: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/Jh3Mtzu6-blue-essence-earn-rates-learning-the-numbers-with-carl-and-henrietta topic.

However, the players haven't yet, other than some emotional ramblings.

Thats why I would like to present my numbers on the issue.

I have played 60 games since the preseason started. I have reached level 37 after my 60th game. This has taken me a total of 29 hours ingame (not including queing times, lobby times,....) I did not use any boosts

Level | Experience | BE 31. 2496exp 810BE 32. 2496exp 810BE 33. 2496exp 810BE 34. 2688exp 810BE 35. 2688exp 1240BE 36. 2688exp 810BE 37. 2688exp 810BE

I also calculated my estimated IP gain from those 60 games using the formula found here: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Influence_Points This estimate doesnt even count the bonus 16IP you get for playing versus premades.

My estimated IP value for all those games is: 5607 IP My attained BE value for those 7 levels is: 6100 BE

So? Riot is telling the truth? We are getting more BE than before? Well,... not quite.

This is data from the first steps of the staircase. Ref. Riot Cactopus https://i.imgur.com/gMx52R0.png[/img]

Let's be fair to riot and make use of the adapted Orange curve we will see from patch 7.23. To go from level 51 ~ 2688Exp (guessed from graph) to level 75 ~ 3688exp (guessed from graph) you would need a total of 79700Exp (linear interpolation) I will round that to 80.000 experience needed to gain the 25 significant levels to the next bonus.

I am averaging 871BE per Level. However, Riot Mortdog claims the average value per level will be 910BE. Once again, lets take the beneficial number for Riot.

Now all we need to know is how much experience we gain per game. I have gained an average of 304 exp per game i played. However. Riot Cactopus claims you will average 192 exp per game. He might have misspoken here, if I take 60games x 192exp + 9FWOTD x 575 I reach an average of 278 exp per game, which is closer to my own experience. For experience per game I think i should use 60games x 192exp + 9FWOTD x 400exp => 252 exp/game on average.

To gain 80.000 experience at a pace of 304 exp per game I need to play 263 Games. If i would on average have gained 93IP per game i would have gotten 24579IP If I get average rolls (910BE) from the chests i would have gotten 22750BE

We would hit 3 milestone levels. (60, 70 and 75) or (80, 90 and 100) Which, in the example of Riot Mortdog are worth on average 2120BE. However these would replace 3 x 910BE levels. Therfore the new total BE gained over 25 levels is: 26380BE

What if you are the unluckiest shmuck ever (810BE every level, including bonusses)? 23760BE What if you are the luckiest fancypants around (1240BE every level, including bonusses)? 33940BE

What if the numbers are realistic instead? EXP for 25levels : 80.000 Average BE per level : 910 Average IP per game : 93 Average EXP per game : 252

=> It will take 317 games to span 25 levels.

You could have gained 29626 IP You will now gain (on average, with milestone bonusses) 26380BE

It's should be duly noted that Champions are the only thing(after the special BE shop goes away) that will be bought.

From what you posted I can gather that the new BE system is a way for riot to make more money, and I don't blame Riot one bit.

It's a smart business decision that will cause players to buy more champions with RP.

The changes to the Orange essence however will definitely hurt Riot's hextech chest sales.

I'm somewhat wary of the accuracy 80k xp number in the gap from 51-75, as it's not a super precise graph and the levels are a bit staggered rather than a smooth line, so find it plausible the average IP gain and average xp gain would be closer if done more precisely. My own hand waving guesstimate at a quick glance was around 72k rather than 80k for example, but I'd really want to sit down and carefully measure each levels line to get a more precise number there.

Another thing is a lot of riots expectations seemed to be tuned around 4 games per win of the day (which I presume is based on their data of actual averages for players), while your numbers are around 6 games per win of the day.

The combination of those two factors might be enough to shift things so that the average IP gain and average BE gain are practically the same, and then if you consider the increased reliability of being able to buy champs for cheaper (via upgrading shards) and no longer needing to buy runes, 'equal' IP/BE gains actually favours the BE system.

Still, refreshing to see someone arguing using numbers instead of gut reaction to the system, and further showing that even in practice for a ~6 games per day person, at least pre 50 that things favour the new system.

Honestly, it's not just the net loss, the new system just feels shittier. I earned enough blue essence to buy the ward, and a full Meowkai Chroma with Bards, oh, and to complete the champion roster. That was really cool, and I thank Roit for not just saying "thanks for wasting time sucker!", but the slow IP gains, while bad, feel a lot better than getting a Nunu shard and 40 blue essence when I am sitting on 4 champs with 3 Mastery VII shards, and one with VI, and I'll NEVER be able to ever get enough essence to get them in anywhere near a reasonable time. The only champ I'll ever have hope of getting Mastery VII On is GP Or Wukong, and that's because they're kinda cheap, and I have a possibility of rolling a shard from leveling.

Don't even get me started on disenchanting a legendary skin and not earning enough OE to buy a freaking 975 RP skin, even though IT'S HALF. I'm sitting on two epic shards I'll never have enough OE for, and they're for champs I really enjoy playing and I like the skins.

Teal Deer: Who has two thumbs and isn't buying RP anymore until Riot makes this system not a complete ripoff? This guy.

If I might ask: how did you reach the 90ish IP average that you listed for your more realistic calculations? I just reviewed my match history before the BE conversion, and I noted that (outside of the FWotD) I only made roughly 60-70 IP per game... I mean, if I got the worst luck ever, then okay, but...

Also, take into account that Riot HAS been monitoring the formulas on BE gains, and they’ve already made some adjustments and concessions. If they see the new system is underperforming, I’m pretty confident they’ll do the right thing and adjust them to meet the spirit of their needs.
