Normal Queue Matchmaking

Is there a reason that normal queue matchmaking is so broken? I queue with 2 of my friends whom are Silver 4 and Silver 1. We get paired against 1 Diamond player, 2 Platinum players, and 1 Gold player. We are queued with two other Silver players, and I'm gold 5. I'm glad that matchmaking is so balanced though. We got absolutely trashed even though we tried our hardest to actually win the game. Is there an explanation for this? Or should I just not even bother playing normals?
