So is Riot just done with the Dark Horse thing?
I really enjoyed when Riot was posting the Dark Horse thing. It was cool seeing people try new things. Why'd they stop it after only two?

Good point. It's been awhile. I mean, people forget that Mage Fortune is a thing 
(and strong).
One fun thing to do, once you get enough practice, is to take supports out of bot lane, or to take certain top laners mid lane, or whatever the hell you want.
Don't let the meta control you. It's a guideline, it's something that's efficient so strangers can play together with some sort of cohesiveness. Learn your champions, their strengths and weaknesses, then learn how to play YOUR way.
Usually things like that are handled not by Riot as a whole but by the individual, in this case Riot Nakyle. If something comes up or they simply lose the momentum and can't get back into it they stop. This lets Rioters have a lot of freedom in what they can and cannot start, but at the same time leaves the success of things like that to the resources of the individual Red alone.
