He kills me in lane

Start cloth 5 and be willing to lose some CS early, just make sure not to let him get free Qs on you. Once you hit level 2, do your best to let him Q into your E and AA into W reset into AA and once your E procs, one more AA then back off and heal with pots. Once your CDs come up, keep doing that until you either kill him, or shove him out of lane. Honestly though, I suggest not even being in that lane if you have trouble with it or counterpick him if that is an option.

Garen does gets shrekt by armor early, after 6 you can start trading, after 11 he can't go anywhere near you.

He can build, but he doesn't starts with cleaver, while you can go with cloth 5; also Garen can afford to go with dmg items, only if he is snowballing, because you will just get kited later without tankiness.

His first buy used to always be brutalizer. Now it's phage into cleaver. It synergies with his kit very well.

You can't compare the powerspike of brutalizer vs phage rush...

Build super defensive early and farm as much as you can. Place your trinket ward behind you so you can jump to it if he attempts to go super offensive. If he really just craps on you and theres nothing to do about it, then accept the lossed lane instead of trying to come back and play really passive. You will outscale him and your troubles with him will typically go away later in the game when you rely a little less on using abilities. Also, always use your R on low health so he can misjudge his ultimate and waste it.

Garen is a lane bully. You will probably be unable to trade with him (unless he really sucks at his mechanics, which is pretty hard because garen is the easiest champ in the game mechanic-wise). Your goal here is to SURVIVE. You will lose quite some CS, because you can't simply go up to the minions when they're in the middle of the lane as garen will just QE you to half health. You must wait for the minions to get under your tower. Garen has no ranged abilities and is unable to harass you under your turret. Your goal now is to get as much CS as possible and not lose too many to the turret (those that are lost while your lane is pushed are inevitable, but you may not allow your turret to steal more).

Let the turret hit the melee minions twice and then you hit them once to kill them. For casters you need to attack once before the turret attacks and then hit again. Alternatively, you can use W to kill off a caster minion. You can also W right after an AA to clear 2 minions off faster (when your minions also arrived, it can get tricky to get all minions as they screw up their health). If your jungler comes, and ONLY THEN you should seek to fight Garen. However, don't do it if you're already under half health (or wait until you jungler nearly killed him, which is unlikely).

In the lategame, you will deal more damage than Garen. Just kill his team and let your team deal with Garen, or kill him yourself if no other enemies are around. You should also look for squishies to kill, though.

Garen scales much greater than he used to though. A good strategy against Jax late game as Garen is to go for quick trades, trying to bait out Jaxes ultimate. Then Retreat to a bush or something, gain all your health back in five seconds, and then go in for seconds. It's true, Jax does more damage than Garen as do many champions late game, but Garen can make up for this by never dying.

Start cloth and 5 pots.

Garen's main source of damage, and counter engage are his q and e, so bait both of those out while pushing really far, and q to a minion whenever he uses either of them, and basically stay safe farming until 6.

Once at 6 you should have some items that are giving you sustain and damage like. item 3044 item 3057

You'll also have your ult which is great for sustain too.

Basically all you have to do at this point is bait out his q, and then wait for your 5th stack of passive and 2nd stack of your ult passive, and then do an all in engage with e,w, and q + extra damage from an AA with 3rd hit passive, and keep aaing him to get some extra trade damage off, especially if he e's, because you can't escape his e, the only thing you can do is try to trade damage back. This will basically be your main engaging combo, and as long as you play it safe and buy wards until you can set up something like this. You should easily win this lane.

P.S. Don't let Garen use his passive if you got him low, always trade aa's before it comes up.

Sheen and Phage don't give sustain. Jax ult does not give sustain either.

Unless you already have a defensive item plus botrk and tri, you always want to get out of his E. You will not win the trade if you are squishy and sit on him while he spins. You may outdamage him, but he will be tankier and therefore will have more %hp remaining.

Phage does give sustain actually, you build into those items so you can hypercarry later if you're decent at csing and haven't fed him, if you really need to start out giant's belt on first back instead of building towards trinity, then you probably deserve to lose lane.

Mecha MaIphite1 votes

Phage gives a bit of tank, not sustain. Maybe you're thinking of cutglass?

LegacyDAP1 votes

Health isn't sustain? I guess I'm wrong then, but I'm saying the MS it provides is nice, and the AD it provides is nice.

You'll scale better than him later in the game, so post 6 you can trade really well, as long as you dont stick around in his spin-to-win.

If you cant dodge his Q, like youre too close or you blew your Q on something else, use your E as soon as possible. Hopefully, if you hit E before he silenced you, you'll stun him and you can get out of his spin. Thats a lot of his trade right there.

Once you hit 6, harass him by AA minions twice, then jump on him and hit W. This will deal A LOT of damage, proc'ing your W and Ult passive.

start e and cloth 5 and try to all-in cheese at lvl 1, if unsucessful get tanky and spam pots.
