People who AFK mid game because others won't surrender

I think there should be punishment for people who just AFK because they don't want to play anymore it happens so much and it's gone unpunished i can't even move ahead in ranked anymore because people just give up it's not fair to anyone when other AFK and it makes this game super unlikable i want to move up in rank but that will never be possible if this keeps happening

I'm personally of the opinion that refusing to surrender games that are very clearly over is toxic. Picture the scenario: The score is 7-30, you're down 6 towers, the enemy team scales better than you, and they're too busy running around instakilling you over and over to push and win the game. Why the hell would you vote no in that situation? Yes, we could theoretically win the game, but it would basically require multiple enemies to go afk, and I don't feel like getting anally fisted for 10-15 minutes for the .01% chance that multiple enemies suddenly go afk and stay afk long enough for us to win.

Getting destroyed for far longer than you needed to in this game will affect you in the next game. Going 1/11 in a 7/48 game is going to leave you with a very bad attitude going into the next game, and it will make you play worse. I don't care about your stupid "never surrender" mantra; I will vote no as well if I honestly see a realistic way we could win. But we've all been in games where we clearly couldn't do anything even if the enemy team made horrible misplays. If you pick a 5v4 teamfight while the enemy adc is pushing a side lane and you still lose that fight, the game is over. Don't force me to continue to play this game in the blind hope that we somehow magically win. That 10 minutes of my time that you wasted is 10 minutes I could've spent actually having fun in a game where I'm not getting completely destroyed.

10 minutes sounds nice. Most of the lost games I get forced to wait through end up being 15-20 minutes longer. This is a real problem with duo queues especially since they can hold the surrender vote hostage just to be dicks.

Pretty much my views. Sometimes even not surrendering creates more toxicity. You should have surrendered when it was obvious that you were going to lose a player but you decided to waste time out of your life. This is, of course, assuming you knew something bad was going to happen if you didn't surrender gold.

It's not eSports if it's in normal mode. Yes, in ranked (if I ever go back there again, probably not) I won't ever surrender because it hurts my LP. In normals though, I'm not going to waste my time in the hopes that the enemy team throws. I play normals to have fun, not to play with Yolo Queue tryhards that never surrender even after they feed 8 kills to the enemy mid lane and then proceed to wreck my shit for the next 10-30 minutes. Not fun.

I have literally never been Bronze; I was placed into silver straight after lvl 30 and am in Plat atm. As for your other point, I would imagine that the people who have very limited time to play this game would be even more annoyed when they are forced to use so much of that limited time stuck in unwinnable games just because 2 or more people don't want to surrender a clearly lost game. People don't play a certain amount of games, they play a certain amount of time. If I have a day off on Saturday after a long week at work, the last thing I want to do is waste around an hour of that being stuck in obviously lost games that people won't surrender because of some machismo, no surrender bullshit.

PS. I'm calling bullshit on the no offense ending of your last post. If you didn't mean to be offensive, then you wouldn't be making "ur bronze" comments.

I do nighttime contract work, which basically means that I work on projects for usually about a week or so with very long hours, often 70+ in a week, followed by many days off until another project is available. And we have to be ready for a new project with often less than 24 hours notice, which means I have to keep a nighttime schedule even when I'm not currently on a project. This gives me alot of free time with not much to do since it's the middle of the night, so I play League.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Well see, so you have a lot of free time on your hands which explains your attitude towards surrendering/playing out games. So imagine a normal worker who has to get up at 5 to start his work at 6 and then works 8 hours till about 3 and comes back home at 3:30. Considering you have to make food, do housework, maybe have a girfriend/family/etc... you have maybe 2 or 3 hours free time if you wanna get 8 hours of sleep which is considered healthy. So in 3 hours you can play how many games? I think 5 at most unless all games are stomps, but usually about 3 or 4 I would say, when I used to work full time I barely managed to play 3 games every day. And of course the individual games mean much more to me then and I am not like "meh, lets just ff and go for the next game". I actually wanna win the few games I have time for. So to me people with a selfish and destructive attitude like you are egoistic and think they can decide this game is over. Which is why I asked whether you have ever played and type of sports in a team. League is a teamgame too, you don't put yourself over the team.

It's not a choice between winning or losing the game. It's a choice between losing 3/19 at 20 minutes vs. losing 7/45 at 40 minutes. I'm talking only about games that are blatantly over, where the only chance you have of winning is if the enemy team has a sudden onset of dementia. I'm not choosing to lose; the game is already lost, I'm just choosing to lose sooner rather than later. If the score is only 12-20, please, play on; that kind of deficit is easily recoverable. I hate when people go super negative and start spamming "GG" in a game that is definitely still in reach. But if we are massively behind, and I see no realistic way we can recover and win, then yes, I'm going to call for a surrender vote, and if I'm getting flamed and harassed at the same time, then yeah, I'm gonna just sit in the fountain until the game is over. I see no reason to let the enemy team instakill me over and over just because my teammates enjoy getting penetrated too much to surrender.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

So you decide when a game is over and when not? 3/19 at 20 mins is over for but 12/20 is not? Where is the border? Don't you see the flaw in your logic? What might be over in your eyes might still be very winnable in the eyes of your teammates who are trying to win but you are taking away that chance from them.

The border is created by thousands of games of experience; it certainly isn't arbitrary. Being down 3/19 at 20 minutes in League is basically the equivalent of being down 3-35 in an NFL game. Is that kind of lead insurmountable? No, it's obviously been done before. But, if you were seriously capable of coming back from a 3-35 deficit, you likely wouldn't find yourself down 32 points in the first place. This is even more true in League when you consider that a team that is down 3/19 is now down an enormous amount of gold, even more than they were when they gave up that lead in the first place. If you couldn't get the game under control at 3/9, what makes you think you'll suddenly be able to do it at 3/19?

And tbh, I don't really care if my teammates are seriously trying to win a game like that. If we were 1/6 ten minutes ago and now we're 3/19, the team has already clearly demonstrated that we don't have what it takes to to claw back into the game. I'm not going to waste my time trying to help a team win a game once it's 3/19 when they've already shown they couldn't handle the game under far more favorable circumstances. And frankly, demanding that I play along with their delusion that we'll somehow miraculously win makes them the selfish ones, not me.

IcyPepper2 votes

He clearly stated the difference.

Normals is for fun, ranked is for competition. Obviously his mindset is appropriate for ranked (as he stated), and his attitude toward normals is intending to have fun. Surrendering because you're not having fun in a game is a valid reason, but it's still put up to vote.

But calling people out based on ranked due to a difference of opinion is more Bronze-y, if you ask me. Don't act elitist because you have a higher rank, a border and some victorious skin doesn't excuse being a jerk.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

I never called that guy out go read the the answers again, besides I think he can talk for himself. If you want to surrender a game because its not fun for you PERSONALLY then you are putting yourself over the team. Which is selfish.

I would accept your (extremely condescending) point if a game of League Solo Q was anything like a pick up basketball game with friends or a high school football game.

In a pick up game, the goal is to have fun and some light competition. If someone is having such an absolutely horrible time that they would just rather quit, and you try to force them to keep playing anyway, you need to reconsider why you're playing in the first place.

In the case of a high school football game, while it is much more serious and competitive, there are still key differences between a high school football game and a game of League. In football, the opposing team don't become stronger, faster, and more skilled players every time they score a touchdown, but in League, they do, hence "feeding". Most high school football games also have mercy rules in place, so that teams that are down 56-0 in the second quarter don't have to continue getting stomped for another hour. And even when those mercy rules don't exist, football games still eventually end no matter what, since it is a time based game, wheras a team that's stomping in League could theoretically choose to keep the game going forever, so long as someone on the losing team keeps clearing minions.

Another important difference is who is on your team; in a football game, the people on your team when you're getting stomped are the same people you've been training and playing with the entire season. You may not all exactly be having fun at that moment, but you're all highly unlikely to have true animosity towards each other. Contrast that to League Solo Q, where the losing team is nearly always a cesspit of raging, blame, and overall unpleasantness. I'll play out the game for my high school football team; I see no reason to play out a 3/23 stompfest just because the guy who's called me a faggot 7 times is threatening to report me if I don't.

Funny you mention that. In the NFL, when a team has the lead, they run the ball more often which runs time off the clock. In the last two minutes of the game, they even intentionally run out the clock.

They do this for two reasons:

  1. It's intentionally advancing their interests. They're far more likely to win and they do it faster.
  2. It's good sportsmanship to end the game faster rather than drag it out.

In Baseball, If a team has the lead they don't bat at the bottom of the Ninth inning even though they could run up the score.

In Tennis, it's not possible to play it out past the point at which you could win - And there have even been instances of top level athletes (such as Novak Djokovic) choosing to forfeit the match because they're exhausted, it's hot (at the time over a hundred and thirty degrees Fahrenheit on the court in Australia), and they know they don't want to play it out for another couple hours in the brutal heat. They do this because there's also a very real risk of permanent injury or death if they don't forfeit.

Every major sport has rules for forfeiting, and every team is willing to forfeit if their players are unwilling to play in the conditions given. Most games choose to have backup players for whatever reasons. League offers this too, but you basically have to queue up for another game.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Those are 2 terrible comparisons, but don't worry next time it is 130 degrees in your room you can /ff.

The tennis example has literally nothing to do with temperature or heat. It's because of poor playing conditions. No need to nitpick.

I completely agree. If it's 15 minutes into the game and the carries of the other team each have 10 kills, along with map and objective control, it's nearly pointless to continue playing. Your only hope of winning a game like that is the other team massively throws the game at 75 minutes in. In cases where it is 3-30 at 15 it's quite clear the other team is more skilled and/or works far better as a team. I'd rather surrender at 20 and get on to the next game than spend 30 minutes relying on the other team to make some miraculous throw, which in most cases doesnt happen because that super fed team is just toying with you until they decide to end.

Slacky1011 votes

Well I have come back from a 54 to 9 game and that's because me and my friend refused to surrender games too soon, it is stupid that people surrender well to early even if you are only down 2 or 3 kills depending on who has them, it shows more skill if you can win the late game overall and come back to a loss and in that game I am talking about we only came back to 40 something and still won because the more kills the other team has the more overconfident they get and make mistakes>

In addition to this they should remove the surrender vote completely because if you are saying that they are instantly killing everyone they would finish really quickly also, it is unfair to surrender based on they score at 20 mins as there are champs that play better in the late game that you don't even give them a chance to get too.

Well if a majority of the team weren't playing so badly maybe your teammates would have some motivation to keep on playing rather than dragging out the game for 20-30 more minutes with the same inevitable loss.

Yeah but a lot of times people will AFK just because of a minor gold lead the other team has that could easily be reversed by one good team fight. If its a ranked game you should always be looking to equalize the game and get the win.

That is very rarely the case. I have sympathy for people that do that, because too often it's the people that have fed through the entire game that are raging at their team and voting no on surrender votes. Some people would rather take the penalty of afk-ing than last through people stalling it out when it's obvious you can't win.

Or, you know, you could surrender. You are forcing someone to play a game they think is a loss. I've had several games that I've seen as a loss and we always have lost those games even though I tried my hardest still. Some losses are obvious. I hate to be the person to say this, but kudos to those who respect themselves enough not to waste their time. I don't afk or leave but I get really upset when it's obvious it is a loss and people don't understand the game enough to realize it while forcing me to play still.

Also, people like that do get punished. You should check at the end game stat screen and check the report button.

Well, I admit I get mad when a game is very clearly lost and two people refuse to surrender (and then most of the time troll the team afterwards), but I still play it out. If you want to keep playing even in a losing game, I'll oblige you. I just get irritated when the enemy team goes into cutscene mode and slowly chokes us out because they want to make the game as miserable as possible for us.

That being said, if you run into players like that, report them. Report them early and report them often and just make sure they get reported. Every time you fail to report toxic players, you add more toxic players to everyone else's pool of teammates and opponents.

Remember: If 5% of players are toxic, that means that 50% of games will have a toxic player. (because there are ten players per game). If you don't want to experience toxic players in half your games, report 100% of them.

(and uh... voting to surrender doesn't make someone toxic)

Unless something important IRL is happening (not "g2g gotta go to bed" or "gotta eat dinner brb"), there's no reason to AFK, for any reason. (I apologize for the inherent hypocrisy in this statement. But you know what I mean).

And because someone will ask, good reasons to AF:: Family emergencies, loss of power (due to uncontrolled events), sudden vomiting/diarrhea. Yeah, no one wants the AFK teammate. But if I'm about to shit myself, I'm sorry. I'm not shitting in my chair. (But please, poop before ranked).

Played a couple ranked games on Sunday. Had at least 1 afk in every game. 1 game that went on forever had 3. Luckily, only 1 on my team.

If you don't have at least an hour, don't queue up in ranked.

this happened to me about 3 games ago... our Bard was afk, so I was left in bot lane alone against a Cho'Gath and a Gangplank (don't even ask) but I was actually getting kills. They thought they could tower dive but I got multiple double kills and even got the bot tower before they got mine. Our Heimer in mid lane and our Xin Zhao jungle were getting caught out a lot and they kept blaming us. I was getting fed, and I knew that we could win if we tried, even if our Bard disconnected. But Heimer and Xin decided to sit in our fountain, placing wards and spamming chat.

The whole game turned into a cluster-fuck of Xin and Heimer and members of the enemy team dancing at dragon, enemy Udyr telling me to send my Jinx rocket at Baron to steal it, and enemy Teemo and Singed camping in our base. It was crazy.

Well i have come back from a 54 to 9 game and that's because me and my friend refused to surrender games too soon, it is stupid that people surrender well to early even if you are only down 2 or 3 kills depending on who has them, it shows more skill if you can win the late game overall and come back to a loss and in that game I am talking about we only came back to 40 something and still won because the more kills the other team has the more overconfident they get and make mistakes

But don't you think it's understandable that when you teammates feed like 0/7 in just 20 minutes? Like I just played a game in which I played yasuo vs annie. It's already being a rough matchup for me but I solo killed that annie 4 times. However, my teammates just keep dying and dying and in 20 minutes enemy vayne had 9/2/3 while our adc had 1/5 and top lane had 0/5. The top minions are under the inhibitor turret. I tried to help them but I realized mid inhibitor would have gone if I leave. Well, I decided to surrender but those they refused to click yes. I then went AFK and then they just typed all chat report Yasuo for AFK. How can you report someone who has higher level than you, more cs, better kda? I understand that people report afk because they are affecting game experience, am I really affecting the game experience though? I mean if you think it's fun you can keep playing, it's not like the game you have already ruined won't be fun without me. It's fucked anyway. Can't you just get me out of the game and let me play with someone else?
