[Suggestion] Voice Chat in Games with Random People (I know it sounds ridiculous)

Hey League Community,

I know this suggestion sounds like a stupid idea for some people since they experience toxic behavior by other players. I know this since I asked a couple friends of mine what they think about this idea. Almost everyone disagreed with this idea. But I still have hope in this. I come from the DotA Community (you can hate me for that) and we have a voice chat for quite some time already. The DotA community can be toxic aswell, but voice chat is actually fine! I don't see a reason to not implement this into League except of some toxic behavior! Maybe the people at Riot Games already had some thoughts about it. We all have a voice chat in the game lobbies already. But honestly, who uses them? If people want to play together, they mostly talk to each other via TeamSpeak, Discord or other communication platforms. For me it is really hard to type while actually having to focus on the game.

For example calling a champion on your lane missing. You have the ping yes, but what if a jungler is about to gank your lane and leaves because he doesn't have the opportunity to execute a successful gank. You saw this person on the lane before he left. How can you call this person as missing? You only have the ping "Enemy missing", but nobody knows which one. He only sees the ping mid. People who can't type fast have problems with this and have a disadvantage because of that. Stuff, which can be fixed with the voice chat. This is pretty important in my eyes.

Sidenote: In DotA we have the ability to call someone missing by clicking on their player icon

"What about the people who are toxic, scream in their microphone and only disturb the voice chat?" There should be two options added for that.

  • a voicechat mute-button
  • a reporting option for abusive voice chat

What I really wish to see would be something like a testing period in for example Solo/Duo Ranked Queue and maybe draft pick. I also added a poll where you can vote what you think about a voice chat test period. I hope under this post we can discuss about this feature and maybe a Riot empolyee can add something to this! :)

For the people asking why I don't keep playing DotA: I actually got bored of the game since my mates stopped playing it. Here I am now.

Also it takes more to be toxic in Voice than be toxic in chat. I've come from R6 pre toxic punishment, where you could literally type and say everything, everything.

they kinda handled the text chat with their profanity filter or something if I remember correctly. Voice chat can't be handled, I know that. But people who talk s.... about the teammates should get muted and reported anyway. Negativity only makes the team feel and perform worse. That's why at the end of the game I almost have everyone muted. I don't mean stuff like "it would've been better if you upgraded skill xy", more like "why the F..... you I........ did you upgrade this. Useless .........................."

Ye, end of last year they introduced it (Ranked is still in Beta, lmao) But still, you can mute and report, like you've said but that's about it. I have still encountered less people being toxic in voice than in chat, maybe they are to lazy.

Maybe they don't have the skills to insult you in voice chat because their english isn't that good :P

Eh, they have their own language and everyone knows a bit of english. Like, german insults are great and if I was that much of a toxic person I doubt I would always stick to english. ^^

What's the sense of insulting someone when they don't know the language? They could also tell you a cooking recipe on their language and you would understand the same.

they could handle this issue by making it so you can enable or disable voice chat and putting a warning message saying might include profanity or vulgar language

Do not want. I once accepted a group invite after a good ARAM game and for some reason accepted (I usually ignore these requests). I forgot that chat for groups had gone live. The people in the group weren't particularly toxic toward teammates but they were not the sort of people I would normally want to chat with in my day to day life. Hearing their voices was somehow incredibly intrusive and distracting compared to regular chat in game.

Even with my own friends IRL that I sometimes play with I prefer not to be in chat with them. I just concentrate better without talking or listening to others.

I work the same way, but you can always mute them since OP proposed a mute person/people voice chat option. If it helps other people play their best, I'm all for it, but I'm not going to down something just because it doesn't directly benefit me as an individual.

its not really as bad as people would make it seem.

its the same in literally every other game; all voice chat is "opt-in", you arent in it by default unless the game is heavily centered around comms.

Eleshakai1 votes

The problem is that once you HAVE voice chat, everyone assumes everyone uses it, and all communication is there. So the people who don't opt in are just factually at a disadvantage, thus pressuring them to opt in even if they really don't want to.

FOR JUSTICE2 votes

they don't have too; the existence of voice chat wont necessarily invalidate or disable text chat. this is more or less the gist of my argument. you don't really lose anything because you can still type or ping to communicate intents. just leave it up to the individual player to decide whether or not they want to use voice chat.

some like me of course would rather enjoy it because im able to shrug off someone whining or something like that, and of course there are others who really wouldn't feel it, but its not really that bad an idea to leave something completely at their own discretion, especially because there isn't as i stated before any real obligation to use it. especially for those who use /mute all, it wouldn't be any different.

Eleshakai1 votes

I wish we lived in such an ideal world.

Here's how this will end up going in most cases: A person who uses voice chat won't cater to one person who doesn't... they'll just get pissed off about that person who opted out of voice chat ruining the game by never knowing what's going on.

FOR JUSTICE2 votes

this kind of implies they wont ping just because they're in voice chat though.

pinging has become so natural its just muscle memory at this point, even professionals who are guaranteed to be in voice chat still ping each other.

Eleshakai1 votes

The ping and use voice to contextualize it. ping "Pink here" or ping "J4 there" or ping "mid MIA leaning bot"

Which is better communication, except for the person not in voice chat who before might've gotten a quick word contextualizing it, but now will get nothing.

FOR JUSTICE1 votes

by using nothing but pings:

> enemies have vision here ping

> enemies are missing > jarvan iv (alive)

> enemies are missing > (general ping a predicted path)

or

> enemies are missing > danger ping botlane

you can still be in voice chat and use pings to contextualize anything tbh.

Eleshakai1 votes

You're missing my point completely. Of course you CAN, we've been doing it for years. My point is that if you introduce voice, it WILL 100% take over as the primary assumed form of communication. I can nearly guarantee it. People will use fewer pings, and contextualize in voice - whether the entire team is in the comm with them or not. People WILL stop using text chat and go to voice in stead, whether the entire team is in there or not.

It will either pressure people to use voice(if all but one are in there) or create breakdowns in team communication where there are two separate sets of comms with different info and half the team goes one way and half goes the other. These are speculation, but I'd lay 99% odds on it happening.

Dota community doesn't use voice chat unless games are above 6k mmr

EUR0BEAT1 votes

I already had people at 700 MMR (yes, it was a hell) who used voice chat. So that's not really true. I won almost every game when using voice chat because of the quicker communication. Typing literally takes too long

Fluffeh1 votes

Riots already asked the community about this years ago, the community voted against having voice chat.

AetherArising1 votes

Alternatively, have it be opt-in instead of opt-out, you can ask people to join instead of hassling them to make them leave

Clockwork Mouse1 votes

I just don't understand why Riot is so behind on this simple stuff. Just add in voice chat to the game. If you don't own a mic or don't want to use it, than just don't turn on the feature of hearing other players. Also why can't you PM people in the game? You have to friend them first and wait for them to accept the invite. What a hassle.

Eleshakai2 votes

That last bit is to prevent harassment.

Clockwork Mouse1 votes

It is unnecessary, and intrusive. So what if some people might use a feature with ill intent? doesn't mean it isn't a good feature to have or that it represent the majority of people. And what is Riot's deal with trying to babysit its users like that anyway?

Eleshakai1 votes

Since LoL Accounts can be created in a matter of seconds, Riot needed a method to prevent people from spam creating account to whisper people harassment. If you didn't have to accept a friend invite first, people would have no way to protect themselves from harassment of this nature.

Additionally, they also wanted to protect people from the type of 'service advertising' that happens in a lot of big games, so they force you to accept the friend invite before the message can come through.

Clockwork Mouse1 votes

Okay, so how many people are actually going to go so far as to make multiple accounts just to harass someone? Not a lot, at least compared to the amount of normal people that would just use a PM feature to just talk to someone post game. Xbox Live and PSN have PMing features and after over a decade of use I have never been harassed. The worst i got was some salty users calling me a bad player for a few post. The thing you said is just assuming that bad things will happen, so we put restrictions on the users.

Eleshakai1 votes

Actually, I'm pretty sure there was a time when Riot DID allow people to just PM... and the above things I mentioned happening were the specific stated reasons they got rid of it.

Eleshakai1 votes

I am not at all concerned about voice-driven toxicity... I dislike voice chat with randos because of all of the other problems.

I don't want to have to deal with bad microphones, people with fans right by their face, someone's screaming brats, people who think they can speak English but can't, people who just feel like I want to hear EVERYTHING they say in stead of just game stuff, etc. distracting me when I play LoL… but if VC exists, everyone will assume everyone's using it, which will mean they won't type/ping as much, and thus by turning it off I'll be at a disadvantage.

It's a lose/lose.
