double smite in game.

so the story is i messed up in a [normals] champion select, no one called jungle so i figured id take it. i didnt realize our Hec decided to jungle and took smite as well.

now to the main question. has anyone taken smite top lane? i had flash and smite as summoners and typical dmg runes and masteries on yi vs a Kalista top. my mind set was that ignite wasnt too big of a loss since i start hunters.M anyway with 2 pots and build it into stalkers blade later. the true dmg and slow on a 60 second CD was somehow worth while. kalista went 1/8/4 and i ended up with 12/2/4

ill assume i was lucky but im glad double smite didnt end the game badly

Warwick and Yi are incredible with smite top. It works better than ignite and you can 1v1 almost anyone once you have the hunters upgraded. I actually like this change. It makes contesting jungle objectives more interesting and it makes some champions more viable in lane than they used to be. That said, I don't think top lane champs are balanced against a WW or Yi with smite. Pretty much anyone who relies on auto attacks, attack speed, or on-hit affects that would want ignite would be better served by a smite / jungle item path.

I'm pretty sure double or triple smite will become a thing unless other things get buffed / changed or it gets nerfed.

I was also wondering if it was worth it, since it opens easy counter jungle from top as well. Even more baron/dragon presence. I think it might be good on a few top.

You were lucky, but not in the way you think. Yi has a fair number of champions he is countered by in top lane laning. Just be glad that mess didn't happen.

As for the spell it is fairly viable for laners now. It's a bit like tear of the goddess, if you're able and willing to dump gold into a mostly useless item now you can get a very useful item later on. I would do some testing before taking it over ignite or teleport, but if you accidentally take it it's not the end of the world.
