Insights and advice on Mordekaisers' unbalanced game flow (from a Hardcore high elo Mordekaiser OTP)
Mordekaiser needs balance changes. He can't duel anymore like last season due to removal of deathfire touch, he can't catchup as good anymore due to stormraider being effective and phase rush not, both early the bonus is too cheap, and late it is incomparable to proc on a champion that could proc stormraider with one E lategame. Mordekaiser is a close range mage (or atleast should be intended to; let me clarifiy):
Not only the loss of valuable keystones is the problem for Mordekaiser; because Aery is still <decent>, there is more problems: Since season 8, every champion got compensated stat buffs for the loss of runes, while Mordekaiser got affected in this way:
- He lost both of his keystones (dft by far more dmg than aery 11secs on R and storm can be procced from ranged midlategame with only E, phase cant be procced from ranged.
- When every champion got base stats&skill(s) buffs morde unnoticedly got the weakest stat changes of all. +5 Armor only, and no spell buffs (which is the point of morde, you lack CC, you lack gapcloser, AND you start with 325 movement speed. So combat should be strong with all these downsides COMBINED as the only champion in the game.
Another thing to keep in mind is; mordekaiser always had the advantage in numbers (damage) on his opponents, because that is what he should have considering what I outlined early about the 3 downsides of this champion. Now with the new runes, Aery <tightens> the gap which Mordekaiser had on his opponents in terms of numbers, while there is no compensation for his weak mobility/gapclose/CC'less kit.
Game flow: (TOP): LANE:before: strong pushing power make you be able to build the wave in your favor, and 1vs2 at level 4 with 2 points in W, assuming you played around the wave with you W building a shield, and activating it for the double heal bonus. LANE:now: hardly wins 1v1s, and if the trade is favorable, opponent just disengages in previous stormraider matchups, or just does not take the damage DFT would offer in damage keystone matchups.
The weird but META way to play Mordekaiser now is to do ANYTHING to avoid combat and to get first dragon (it deals TOO much damage, has no counterplay when diving enemy bot). I mean test it in a custom, it is ridiculous. Your bot wins afterwards for you since you just made a play that is completely unbalancedly changing the dynamic of the game around bot. Next up, try and get herald, get the dragon again and run down mid with your army. Again abusing the ghost, althought a bit less broken than the first one, but still high damage with aery and magic pen scaling with his AA's. If this all fails, or the game is still evenly balanced (latter rarely happens), just scale into the weird LIANDRY+RYLAI+VOID triple item spike (on your ult only). Liandry doing 13% of their max HP damage on your 10seconds DoT Ult, Rylai amplifying the Liandry damage to 26% max HP, and void amplifying the %dmg from Liandry+Rylai combo and your ult alltogether.
There are many more things to touch on, but let me clarify what I think are all good possible changes to balance the way Mordekaiser works right now:
-
Buff his base armor/magic resist OR his passive generation of shield slightly (THIS IS A MUST! CRUCIAL HIDDEN NERF TO HIS BASE STATS IN PRESEASON)
-
Buff his base damage on his E or Q (THIS IS A MUST! CRUCIAL HIDDEN NERF TO HIS BASE STATS IN PRESEASON)
-
Nerf the dragon ghosts' health and damage earlier in the game. Keep the stats of the drago ghosts later in the game.
-
Change the ultimate to automatically execute below certain amount of HP. Not sure about % or flat, but at the same time the DoT dealing Current %HP damage as opposed to Max %HP damage with a different ratio to compensate for this change, and being similar to the way Liandry(+Rylai) affected his ult before.
-
Last but not least, 325ms is too low for a champion without gapclose AND cc (the only in the game without considering the slight boost W'ing a minion for like 15MS averaged). 330 base MS would be Okay. 340+ Too strong.
should definitely receive a buff/ some sort of rework
His playstyle just does not fit current playstyle (flashy plays, cc-dominant etc)
His kit is outdated
