Locking In

I do not understand why I need to lock in for games. I just was kicked out for failing to lock in even after i picked my champion. I never used to lock in as to allow my team the most amount of time to discuss. I know that this is change that I am just going to have to get used to it. But I simply just do not understand the reasoning behind it.
