How are mages doing with the new items? Are they running out of mana a lot, and what are you guys building?

Thanks!

I don't have extensive experience with the new items, but so far, I haven't noticed a huge difference. I think that, yes, you will go oom a bit more often than before, but I think it will come down to playstyle and champions, and is definitely manageable. Laning against resourceless champions is going to suck more than before, but to be honest, by the time I finished Athenes on Live, we'd pretty much be out of laning phase. In any case, it's just one more reason to permaban Zed.

One positive thing is that Morellonomicon is now a major AP item but has a much better build-path (no NLR), and gives you mana plus Athene's old passive (restore mana on kill/assist). I think mana-intensive mage builds will generally fall into 2-3 categories:

  1. RoA -> Morellos. This gives you a good mana pool and the aforementioned Morellos passive. This is what I'll use on Morgana/Annie/most other mages
  2. Tear -> Morellos -> Archangels. This is for mages that need more mana/spam their spells more. This is what I'll use on Orianna and others that have low cooldown spells that stack Tear well. The fact that Morellos gives flat mana now also means it synergizes well with Archangel's.
  3. Morellos -> AP. This is for mages that don't need a ton of mana. IIRC, champs like Brand wouldn't even build any mana regen, and just build damage, nuke some people, recall, and repeat.
