New player looking for help: Which Fighters are better early game compared to late game?

Perhaps it's just my lack of skill/experience, but I've played a few games recently as Illaoi and Lee Sin and it seemed to me that they both didn't really get a good DPS / health ratio until later in the game. To expand on that, it seemed like up until I hit level 10 with those characters, they couldn't hold their own against another champion.

Am I correct in that Illaoi and Lee Sin are late game characters, or am I just inexperienced? Additionally, which characters are early game characters?

Lee Sin is definitely an early game champion.

Illaoi just needs to get an area of control. Harder to do that early.

Pantheon Renekton Riven Volibear are pretty strong early skirmishers.

As a person who mains Gnar , who's early game is great and plus if you can kite you could be able to out trade most heavy melee based champs like Garen Gangplank , but careful of Darius pull. His late game has his damage fall off, so build tanky at that point. a full item build from fighter to tanky looks like this. item 3022 item 3071 item 3078 then tank items look like this item 3742 and item 3065 . your boots depend on the game. More attack speed you go item 3006 . If they are heavy melee based item 3047 and if they have tons of CC item 3111 helps.

fervor of battle or grasp of the undying are the keystones preferred on him.

There are other good items are him but im going too in depth so im just going to stop myself :3

Illaoi wins in a 1v3 or less once she's level 6, it's quite simple
