pretty much title. when i look at my collection of shards a few of them have a little circle icon in the bottom left corner that appears to have a little ward icon in it. i have been trying to figure out the meaning of this little icon, there seems to be nothing posted about it and i cant find any correlation.

The colored gems are not what he's referring to - he is in fact talking about the brown one with the ward looking imprint on the left hand side. It means its a legacy skin - if you notice they no longer say "Legacy Skin Shard" on ones that are obviously Legacy , but instead they have the brown mark now.
