Problem with Lethality items at the beginning of the Season was in my opinion that certain ADC's (Jhin,Varus) abused these lethality Items which completely blocked off bot lane diversity. Why wouldn't Riot consider making "melee only" items? (Crit problem in Season 6. could've prevented certain things as well)
Instead of melee only, even 50% effectiveness for ranged would be good. We dont necessarily need to completely restrict them.
Because its a dumb way to balance things. If all the assassins items were melee only, then why not make all range-happy items ranged only? Why not make tank items only for champions with a certain base resistances? Why not make Mage items only for champions with X amount of AP scalings?
Why not just have every champion have a list that them and champions like them buy from? Assassins buy from the assassin itemset, ADCs buy from the ranged item set etc...
Because its a cheap solution to a problem. Riot wants to encourage multiple build paths, and seeing "50% effectiveness" will just make any ranged champion less likely to pick it when there are as many 100% effectiveness items.
Because that would mean weakening the adc's, and they cant have that...
The problem with making melee-only assassin items is that certain playstyles and future designs will be limited by a huge band-aid fix issue to an overlaying problem with itemization and certain champions abusing them.
Simply put, if Riot wants to make a ranged AD assassin in the future, they wouldn't be able to. Same thing for reworks.

Because then Miss Fortune wouldn't be viable and other ADCs who need Lethality, like Jhin.
And what if they decide to release ranged assassin? They should make special items only for him/her. Makes zero sense.
