What to do as support after the laning phase?

Just dawned on me i have no idea what to do after the early game. I kinda run around like a chicken with my head cut off, and my EXP gets really low. I kinda just randomly go mid or top and help wherever it kinda looks like a fight is gonna break out soon and it's awkward asf.

Depends on the sort of support you are. In that case you stick with the team (Usually the most fed person who needs backup) and peel for them, and help in achieving objectives by zoning the enemy away. This is a little bit harder in solo queue where the team comp is awful and everyone's a squishy assassin or carry except you, which leaves you in this awkward position where you're both the front line and the back line at the same time, but eh... So yeah, hug the big man on your team so they can make plays and get those objectives. If you're an engaging support engage in fights and stick to the backline like a caramel chocolate on the teeth, otherwise stick to your team's carries and punch anyone who gets too close square in the dome :P

Go where the plays (team fights, dragons, barons, towers contests) are going to be so that you can assist your team in whatever they plan to do, and get them out if it goes sour. While doing that, ward where it is needed to cover your team while they're attempting to make those plays/picks/contest objectives. Are you pushing their 2nd top tower when your team is on blue side? Then there should be at least one ward around their red buff, and there sure as hell is no need to have a ward in your banana bush around your own red buff.

When in doubt, stick like the glue to that player on your team who's making things happen.

How do I make sure I'm keeping in level? When I roam a lot i end up missing tons of XP in the process.

Well, that's a lot easier these days. You get a LOT of xp now if you're behind the average level curve. Basically, time management is a support skill. Be watchful for where things are going to happen. Be there.

Know where you want to ward before you wander off, that way you don't just spin in circles wondering what to do. It's a thinking position. Think before you do stuff, that way you can be efficient. Hang out with teammates, that's what you're there for. That doesn't mean be up the split pusher's butt. Be where something might happen, and soak up farm/fight xp.

And remember that you're going to be behind a couple levels. It's the nature of the beast.

You keep up in level by being where your team accomplishes things and using the moments when nothing happens to ward and sweep enemy wards. Don't be waltzing aimlessly around your blue buff when your team is up there sieging and trying to get a tower. Map awareness is key to being relevant as a support post laning phase.

You will be behind solo laners and the jungler if he's doing very well. You should atl east keep up with your ADC.

That's kinda what you're supposed to be doing. XD

The better you get the better able you'll be to interpret the map and enemy movement and be on top of that shit and make life a living hell for the enemy. As long as you don't get caught out by yourself, cuz then you'll die for sure. And don't forget to ward and check for wards on the way.

But it really depends on how mobile of a support you are, some can get across the map like lightning and can help everyone, others are better at sticking with your team's carry and protect him. And in big team fights make sure you know who the biggest threats are on the enemy team and keep your CC ready for them when they make their plays. Knowing who to target and who to ignore wins games.

A good supp goes to aid other lanes. Sadly good supps are punished Xp-wise, which is dumb of Riot.

I miss the old masteries that helped roaming supps.

Now the "ok" or bad supps that steal cs and get xp that way are rewarded.

What happened to my beloved Supp class.

No matter what you do, ward and take out wards. Take it from a stalker, you want to keep an eye on where your target is without being seen yourself.

There are masteries that give movement speed in brush and or river, max that for roaming and other masteries to help you regen, gain gold in lane, etc.

Well, during laning phase, roam only when you know it is absolutely safe to do so. You don't want to randomly throw your ADC into a 1v2 situation that end up turning into the enemy's favor; I have won many games simply because the enemy support roamed at the wrong times, therefore giving my botlane a huge advantage by easily 1v2 the enemy ADC. If enemy bot is MIA, and your ADC just recalled, that's ok to roam.

Usually, if you are ahead, go somewhere else and do something there. It can be push and try to take down towers, take dragon, go babysit someone that needs help, you decide. If you are absolutely clueless, go mid and just try to get the tower.

If you are not ahead and/or is behind, it depends on where the enemy laners are:

  • If they are going mid, go mid with them, while leave your ADC to farm so he can catch up.
  • If they are staying bot, you have 2 choices: go mid, forget about botlane and just push/snowball mid instead, or stay bot with your ADC and hold it until you receive proper assistance (though in this current snowbally meta, not recommended since if you're behind, everyone else is behind).

Just a lot of "up to you to decide", really.
