I can't seem to win games as Alistar , far too often I go in to engage, team doesn't follow up, I die and get raged at.

May try your build next time I use him as I have a bad habit of rushing hp over armor / mr.

You need to assess your allies, and each situations. your cooldowns are long, so its very important you use them when it counts. 80% of league of legends is game knowledge and decision making. the rest is mechanics.

I prefer Face of the Mountain over the SS item because he doesn't really need the extra item slot over most champs/I prefer taking Ruby Sightstone, and because the item active sort of counterbalances his largely-engage-based kit with a nice little shield. I get those two items very early--it's a lot of HP.

I also don't grab locket that early because there are much more enticing items for tanking I'd rather pick up. Righteous Glory is an astoundingly-good early buy--both in the stats it gives and its active--as well as situational stuff like Thornmail/DMP/et cetera. More than anything, its the HP+Resist items I'm looking at, saving the slab of resists and the team shield for later.

As for runes, 9 flat HP seals would be too much for me unless I was using a TON of flat armor alongside it.....and since two Quint slots that I'd use for armor on that occasion would otherwise have those two movespeed quints, and since I opt for a FoTM and Ruby SS as early as possible, I look more toward a mix of flat and scaling resists and more scaling HP to really buff up mid-to-lategame. Ali doesn't always need 9 scaling-MR glyphs because he can itemize MR pretty easily, so 6 flat and 3 scaling CDR glyphs might get more mileage--ESPECIALLY if you want Thornmail earlier than later at the expense of CDR, I've found, and I'm often tempted. More than anything, it's a balancing act and you can get pretty creative with it!!

my opinions on your positions, feel free to disagree (;

Face of the mountain + ruby sightstone: its not bad, but its a later power spike. the power of 4th ward charge earlier is extremely valuable for vision control. it allows you to have 2 rotations of wards each back, as against good players often times you will be fighting over vision control, the higher you climb the more powerful that 4th charge becomes. so delaying this for a 10% shield, + CDR on actives isnt worth in my opinion in a majority of situations- though certainly viable in some.

yes; grabbing a situational item prior to locket is generally a strong idea. my layout just sais Core, as in almost every game youre buying those items @ somepoint. i 100% agree, early righteous glory is extremely effective, as a frozen heart, thornmail or mikaels can certainly be.

Runes: Botlane is all about flat stats. people constantly trading autos and such. in the words of much better players than me, "there is no more efficient stat from seals, than flat HP". this is because each health rune provides more mitigation than an armor seal.

if im not mistaken, scaling health becomes equal to flat health runes @ lv 7. that means level 1-6 the harass you take is going to be more serious. if youre playing the role correctly, youre not just behind your adc while she farms. youre positioning in trading stance looking for favorable all-ins, youre body blocking skillshots that would otherwise hit the adc. -cait Q does less per unit it passes through, tank it.- additionally when your adc goes to last hit/you go to proc relic shield the enemy ADC and support [if they have a clue] are going to be positioned in trading stance, so if you are sitting behind your carry they get to chunk him out for free when he last hits. but if youre an alistar, up there with your carry, they need to be careful of using trading stance in fear of an all-in.

as for CDR runes/they are viable. but against a mage support youre going to want flat MR, when the enemy botlane has no ap [ashe + braum] CDR is an option; i just prefer SMR in that situation, or even flat IF the enemy midlaner is both AP + has serious roam potential against my mid laner. or if the enemy jungle is something like an elise/gragas. early game powerful ganks.

I hope my explanations help you out (;
