Placements on a fresh account question

Hey lads I just have a quick question, I'm on a fresh level 29 account and I'm curious about something before playing the 10 placement games after season 8 kicks in. I'm Diamond 4 on my main and I would like to duo with an another Diamond friend who has a Gold 1 season 7 smurf. Does it affect my MMR if I duo wih him? I want to go for a clean 10-0 and I know that it gets you to Platinum 4 if you pull that solo. So the question is: what would be better to do to get higher MMR hense higher division, playing it all solo or duoing ? thanks for any information side not I can't duo with him on his main since Unranked accounts could only duo with Golds at most

10/10 solo on a fresh account won't necessarily get you plat 4 (and even plat 5 would take some luck).

It depends on your mmr at the end of placement matches. If you're 'lucky' when solo, you can end up in higher average mmr matches and hence gain more MMR for your wins there (but you can just as well end up in lower mmr matches and not gain as much). That kind of thing can happen when theres other people duoing and need some solos to average stuff, and/or with longer queue times.

Duoing yourself will match you based on the average MMR of the two of you, so if that's higher than it would be when solo, then yes it'll be advantageous to your final placement (since every match will have a higher mmr on average, meaning your personal mmr gains will be higher provided you win them all). If their MMR on that account is the same or lower then yours though, then it could produce a lower final placement however, so make sure the smurf is a high mmr smurf and not a smurf with (sometimes intentionally) low mmr.

So I believe it would be better to duo queue (atleast for the couple first games), right? since solo queing it would get you high silvers low golds on the 1st/2nd game.

Most likely it would be beneficial yes.

If it's beneficial for the first game, it'll be beneficial for all 10. (They'll gain less mmr than you for each win so the gap between your mmrs will shrink, but you shouldn't ever actually overtake him in MMR as long as you're together for every game.)

edit: That said, if he's gold 1 on the account, he might 'accidentally' promote to plat 5 before you finish your 10 matches and you'd lose your ability to continue duoing with them.

but his mmr should reset after the season starts, so I guess we'd be gucci?

Probably.

Just be sure that his mmr post reset is still notably higher than yours (it'd most likely still low gold or so after the reset so worth duoing with, but not quite the same as duoing with a gold 1 mmr person).

alright thanks buddy, I guess I'm maybe doing it all solo queue then. I sill have time to think about it. I'll be sure to post my results in here. look forward to it xD

Are you sure unranks can only duo with Gold? I thought unranks could duo with anyone but never tried it.

First time to ranked 'unranked' accounts count as silver for duo purposes (so bronze/silver/gold), 'unranked' otherwise look at previous season rank and imposes duo restrictions based on that.

So can an unranked new account duo with gold? Cause I recently tried and it said the difference in ranks was too high..
