In desperate need of help in regards to playing the ADC role. (Jhin In particular)

Hello everyone, I am a level 29 Support main looking to expand my champion/role pool, but I am having trouble doing so. The role I am currently trying to learn is ADC, and the champion I'm trying to learn in Jhin, but it always feels like I am never making any progress. My main problem seems to be my lack of damage output throughout the game, and my bad positioning, which usually leads to me taking unnecessary damage or dying. No matter how good I do K/D/A wise I almost always leave the game having only done around 10,000 champion damage on average, which is typically only marginally better than the damage of my support. Naturally, this leads to many people accusing me of only stealing kills, and just getting flamed in general, even though I am putting forth a legitimate effort and always trying my best.

This leads me to my first question, how exactly do I put myself in a position to be doing good damage, while simultaneously minimizing the damage I take? And when I reach that position, who do I prioritize as a target? In team fights I always find myself asking "Where exactly should I be right now...?" because I want to get close enough to be able to do damage, but I'm too afraid to overextend myself and get killed. In short, I play a highly passive ADC, only going in for damage on CC'd or low HP champs. Same goes for laning phase, where I only go In when my support or jungler engages for me. (always going for poke when possible however)

Another question I have on positioning is about CS, what should I do when heavily zoned out and dominated in lane? When should I back out entirely, and when is it OK to try for CS in this oppressive lane? And if my first tower goes down, should I roam and try to help other lanes but miss out on CS, or should I try to continue to farm/defend my own lane, but be extremely vulnerable to ganks and death in general?

And finally, I am looking for general tips on the champion Jhin Jhin, literally any tips will be of help to me. I love everything about him, his kit, his passive, everything. I just can't seem to do the damage I need to as ADC, as stated above. I am extremely frustrated as I already have Jhin at mastery 4, but seem to have only made progress on my ability to passively CS. (which, while not perfect, I am good enough at)

In closing, thank you to anyone who took time out of their day to read this massive wall of text. Hopefully these questions aren't too dumb, but I am legitimately lost. And If any further explanation on any of these questions is needed, don't be afraid to ask. Cheers!

TL:DR:

I always leave games with a champion damage total of around 10,000 on average when I play ADC. I mostly attribute this to shoddy positioning, what are your tips to help me get this number up?

I may not be an adc main but i think i know the problem you have. When you play adc, yes, you need good positioning and decent damage output aswell as insight in punishing mistakes done by enemies.

But a huge part in all this is a confident gameplay style. When you play adc you not only need to know what you do, you need to be sure what you do will work out.

And i think your biggest problem regarding playing adc as a whole is just that. You know the things required and practice them but they dont work out anyway because you give too much thought into "am i doing well". Which breeds an insecurity about your playstyle that by extention makes you do mistakes you normally dont do.

ADC is a very dominant and daring role. Playing passive destroys your snowball and your scaling and ends up making you useless.

For lack of better words: dont play smarter, play riskier.

Thats obv not gonna cover everything but it should somewhat help. Ecspecially with jhin. He is just like a psycho artist in a performance. You need to be threatening. They must be perfection and if they arent then they need to direly suffer. With jhin you need to zone the fuck out of the enemy and try landing your Qs and 4th AAs on whoever is squishier.

Im on the phone so i cant write much longer but if you want to i can as soon as im back on my pc write you in a lot more detail

Thanks for the reply!

I think you might have hit the nail on the head with this one, I never really thought of it in this light. You picked the perfect word to describe my playstyle as well, "Insecure". In my head I'm always telling myself things like "Play confident! But not too confident or you'll be caught out!" Which, in retrospect, is actually a quite negative thought pattern to have so I'm glad you brought it up. I'm not really used to playing super dominant and threatening, seeing as I've mostly been playing support for my first 25 or so levels, so this is something I will definitely be trying to improve in future games.

This might also be why I have so much trouble in team fights. As you said, by playing passive I am essentially ruining my late-game, which is another thing I have never really considered.

My only real question is on zoning. I'm pretty ok with poke, Jhin's kit is well suited to that sort of thing, but I never really feel like I'm "zoning" out an enemy, especially when they have a healing support who can just erase any mistakes they've made. Again, I'm sure we can wrap this back around to being confident, but are there any other tricks you use in particular to keep an enemy zoned?

And again, thanks the input, much appreciated.

With jhin you can do what i call "Reverse zoning". Instead of denying an area, you can bait them into one.

People a lot of times will try to prematurely trigger Jhin's E traps if they know where they are in order to ruin your setup. If they do that inlane, provoke an engage by hitting them with a W. Thats best done by letting enemies think you use your E to ward bushes or to zone the river for future ganks. With his Q you can force enemies to walk into angles where they cannot hit you. Position yourself in a correct angle to control where the grenade will bounce off. Usually it hits the nearest target but if you angle it correctly you can trick the skill in mistaking what unit of target is closest.

With Jhin's R you can zone too. You can deny an escape route, stop a siege or provoke a teamfight since the 80% slow is a strong engagement tool for picking out a sole poor bastard.

So zoning might be the wrong word but zone control and micromanagement would be more fitting. I hope this helps.

Take Comet on Jhin, build Lethality, learn how to space. Win the game.
