Feedback on Onslaught Odyssey Missions
With this most recent event, we've seen a newer type of mission that is more akin to achievements in other games. They steepen the difficulty of the content and reward you based on that with prestigious icons or ward skins. I feel like the traditional progression of missions that we have that, I assume, is meant to pad out the event content and rewards don't really fit this newer style of missions we've seen in the Odyssey event.
A normal type of event mission is locked behind a progression that pads out the play time and staggers the rewards to keep you playing longer. It loosely time gates the event content. That's fine because they're really basic missions like: do 100k damage, do some healing, place some wards, kill dragons or kill turrets, etc. These are passive and essentially just reward you for playing the game in general. You don't typically need to go out of your way to do anything extra to complete these. They more or less just serve as a grind through the event's missions for rewards and as padding.
The various Onslaught only missions, I believe should be viewed as a newer type of mission that shouldn't operate the same as the filler missions mentioned above. The Onslaught mode is the hardest difficulty for Odyssey. The Onslaught missions provide an additional challenge through various stipulations to see if you can complete it. If you do, you're rewarded with loot or special icons. They are more akin to achievements in MMORPGs for doing special interactions or completing something on a harder difficulty. In most of these MMORPGs, you wouldn't be forced to progress the easier missions before being able to receive credit for completing the more difficult mission.
Imagine in WoW if you managed to get a group together that clenched out a mythic raid boss kill, but anyone who hadn't cleared it on normal and heroic previously got no loot or achievement. That would feel awful and that is essentially how the missions are set up currently.
Earlier today, after queueing over and over, I managed to land in a group that wanted to do the 2 augment mission. I had not cleared Onslaught at all at this point, and with that any other missions that require completing Onslaught difficulty with specific conditions. We managed to win. I was the lowest deaths and almost tied for second highest damage, so it's not as if I got carried. I was pretty certain this wouldn't give me credit for the 2 augment missions, but I certainly hoped it would. Of course, it didn't count.
I went on to keep spam queueing and landed in a group that wanted to do the all Ziggs/Sona Onslaught mission. We won in this group as well, but of course when I get out of the game it only completed my "Clear Onslaught with all 5 people playing as the same character" mission. It then unlocked the mission to complete Onslaught with all Ziggs/Sona even though I just got done doing that successfully.
[Edit: Not to mention, it makes it discouraging to help others complete missions because you're likely going to need to go back and redo other missions to help them get to the mission you're on so they can even get credit for doing the harder challenge. For example, on my 2 augment clear, the guys wanting to do 2 augment said we could do the others after. No one invited anyone after the game. They finished their missions. They aren't looking to go back and help others catch up.]
Another side issue is the amount of conditions the missions have and it causes queueing with randoms to be a nightmare. You end up with 4 people who all want to do a variety of missions. They end up trying to compromise by doing an augment mission while doing a specific champion mission meaning they're crippling themselves twice as much. I've had quite a few people throw a fit when someone didn't pick the champion or the right amount of augments for the mission they wanted done. Being able to complete multiple levels of these missions at once would alleviate this to a degree.
I think this also shows that LoL could benefit from a LFG type menu. I know the custom games browser already exists, but I think something more specific where you post your group with what you're looking to do (5 man draft, ranked 5s, recruiting a specific role for a team, specific Odyssey challenges, etc.) or be able to sign up through it without having to sit in a custom game lobby.
TL:DR: Make the Onslaught missions all available at the same time or have the game remember if you already completed it previously. You shouldn't need to do the easier missions to receive credit for the more difficult missions. They aren't the same as the arbitrary filler missions.
