Making support an attractive role

Marshad··28 votes·2,744 views

Hey guys, I know i'm not the first one to talk about how support currently is the least liked role by far, but for me as a support main it's nevertheless a pity. On the one hand, i'm glad that my role is really uncontested and that my average queue time is laughable, but on the other hand, it's painful to see just how much supports are neglected. I'm here to propose some ways to make the role I love so much attractive and maybe get some feedback from you guys:

1. Make Supports cheaper Riot already officially talked about how to make people more interested in the role by introducing more supports in every free rotation, and that very much amused me for several reasons: first, people who play any champ for the first time will almost indubitably play beyond average, which decreases the amount of fun one can draw out of the experience by a lot. Second, people who aren't supporters but forced into the role will usually resort to comfort carry picks like zyra, karma or brand ( more about that later ).third, one week is surely not enough to make people appreciate something that is so usually distinct from the other roles, for example not farming, warding etc. . these are several reasons why one week or even a whole month of additional rotation supports is not enough. that's how we come to my proposal: make supports cheaper. I'm not talking about item builds, but RP / IP costs. The most fun, skill-based and unique supports out there ( just to name a few: Braum, Tresh, Lulu, Bard, Tahm...) are all 6300 IP, and it's gonna take a few years before their prices will be reduced. I don't want to convince riot to hand their latest support champs out for free, that would be cowardly, but I rather see them be in a much closer reduction schedule in comparison to the other champs. I often see people who are like "Sure, I played a bit of Nami and I like her, but why should I consider saving up IP for her if I get zed or yasuo(examples for more rewarding and "cool" champs) for the same price?"

2. Nerf carry supports Of course carry supports are an integral part of league of legends and are especially useful if you don't trust your adc, but it shouldn't be a regular pick if you want to win. How is it fair that the Vel'koz support has the most damage at the end of the game? Adding another carry to the team is powerful, but i doubt it's what the role was intended for. Utility should always be more valued than damage on a support, so carrying with a Blitzcrank or Janna is a lot more difficult, but it should reap better rewards. Sadly, I haven't come up with an good way to reduce the damage output of those in any way without either affecting every other carry or the support role alltogether ( f.e. starving the supports of gold so they can't buy damage items like Liandry's torment might sound like an idea, but it would affect item-dependent supports like taric or soraka too) except for one thing, which would be to reduce or just completely remove the bonus damage on spellthief's edge (so the trading potential is decreased but the gold income is still the same). I would very much appreciate any additional ideas about that topic.

3. Acknowledgement I know most people in the post-game screen will switch over to the charts to see their damage output, and every support will look at their bar and say "sigh, just like every time." Acknowledgement is an important psychological aspect of a role, but I not here to talk about how players should stop abusing supports and appreciate their work, but rather how the client shows you with numbers and statistics that you did something besides not farming. Sure there are several ( even if rarely used) charts which especially inflict supports like healed, damage taken, wards placed, destroyed etc. , but there is so much things unmentioned. I'd like to see an additional " Shields given" chart for every janna main out there to brag about, or maybe a "cc" chart where you could say "holy, that leona held them down for ages", but sadly I think people wouldn't look at them either. when looking at the graphs and charts I'd rather like to see something like an performance chart ( kind of like the grading system for mastery) rather than the damage graph, which would stop carries only comparing themselves but instead looking at the big picture and seeing " damn, that Alistar did some work, maybe he carried botlane "( or something like that, this is basically wish-fulfillment for me).

4. Introduce people to the role I always wanted riot to release basic tutorials for every role ( like they're kinda doing right now with the top lane week), because it would help first-timers to prepare for their job and give a nice orientation for people who are looking for a specific role. I often hear from my partner ( midlane yasuo main, obviously), that supports have an easy role because they don't have to farm and have less impact on the game than most carries ( or carry-supports) , something for players who have no mechanics and can't carry on their own. I cannot deny that this is (occasionally) the case, but that doesn't mean that the support role is something for imcompetent fools. One can easily identify a good support by several traits which are overshadowed by their adc's kill streak: proper warding, pre-hitting on minions, wave control, pinging, calling out summoner spells and ability cooldowns, global map awareness etc. All I want is an tutorial video that tells people "maybe you're not a faker who can easily outplay everyone, but your compassion and ability of supporting someone can and will be rewarded in the support role !" I know there's a certain psychological component that creates a rift between "i'm carrying" and "I'm doing my best so my team can carry" , but I think every one has the ability to be a good utility support once he understands what to do and why.

I know, this is just some blabbering by an kinda frustrated support main, and I know most of the points i just made are maybe completely useless or cannot be implemented, but I hope for some honest opinions and feedback from you guys. Marshad

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but not all the normative thinking.

Zyra, Brand, Malz, VK, Lux, and Annie together have a combined pick rate of ~20% according to champion.gg right now. Zyra's the most popular, sitting at #8 with a whopping ~7% pick rate. That's hardly crowding out competition. And these days, it's not uncommon for me (on support Vel'Koz) to be the only champion on either team with poke damage, let alone a Liandry's Torment. This has been true for a long time; Karthus, Ziggs, Xerath, and Vel'Koz constantly top the damage charts, even when they have really low pick rates. Lee Sin jungle (someone that lots of people love to hate on) generally has ~1/2 the damage to champions that Karthus does. And mages supports just happen to have two targets rather than one for the first X minutes of the game.

The role wasn't particularly intended to be a specific pattern. It evolved due to optimization in the meta-game; if you play a 5th character that can function well without items (particularly back in season 1-2 when supports really had nothing aside from wards, boots, oracle's, and maybe a heart of gold if they got fed), then that's effective when there are only 4 sources of income (3 lanes + jungle).

If Zyra was crowding out traditional supports, then I'd say your comment had more room to stand on. It's not necessarily Riot's place to dictate the meta, but they do have a responsibility to maintain certain levels of viability for various types of champions. But when Thresh and Lulu each have a higher pick rate than the top 5 mage supports combined, I don't think that's really applicable.

I just wanna say that I find support role pretty interestinf to play.... we are the playmakers of the bot lane.

What makes it unfun is a flaming adc. That's what I hate and probably other people too. We get blamed for everything. Adc is shit? Blame the support. Shit adc dies? Blame the support. Support dies to save adc who walks away and flames? Blame the support. Fuck off. We're not here to save your sorry ass every time you do something dumb.

Rant over xD

This is why I'm often hesitant and willing to play ADC. When I have a support with me, I really ensure that you're comfortable laning with me and that I can adapt to the playstyle the support wants me to have and that I just generally want my support's job to be easy on his shoulders.

Fondling Gems2 votes

To add onto this is sucks to play support in any kind of ADC killing meta. 5 man bots? Sucks. Assassin meta? Sucks.

Any meta that screws the ADC over thereby screws the Support role over. We don't become more in demand because ADC's are getting destroyed, we become less in demand because they are getting killed regardless so it is better to have two carries bot so that one can defend/fight back. If Zed is going to 100-0 your ADC through FotM, Redemption and Locket then why not just play Zyra? At least then he can only kill one of the two carries bot.

moman18981 votes

I dont think thats true at all, in an assassin meta, supports are very necessary, the meta just shifts to heavy disengage supports. Like yes braum is basically useless against a zed or talon, but if a zed tries to ult my carry while im playing lulu with my plymorph, exh and ult, i wish him luck

Fondling Gems1 votes

See I think assassins are always functional, supports just counter them. In an assassin meta though assassins get strong enough to kill through a support, hence why they are the meta.

A few supports like Lulu become functional due to the crazy amount of defense they can bring but the majority of supports fall off the face of the map. Ever seen a Taric try and save someone from a zed ult? Unless you can land the stun and they use the time to get away your carry is probably dead regardless of having a FotM, locket, and redemption.

but we haveBraum Taric Illaoi Leona

but in all seriousness the multiple free supports per week was a good first step.

Nerf base damages and increase scaling. That has been the standard go-to for toning down a chanpion's supporting strength without affecting their main role for ages now.

Make Supports cheaper

nope

Nerf carry supports

?

What?

Carry champs = popular. No support carry champs = dead ass role

Acknowledgement

maybe

but

"I'd like to see an additional " Shields given" chart for every janna main out there to brag about, or maybe a "cc" chart where you could say "holy, that leona held them down for ages", but sadly I think people wouldn't look at them either"

You are right, nobody will look at that at all

The best way to do it would to have a wards placed/destroyed counter or something on the score board. Nobody cares about anything but damage in post game stats.

Introduce people to the role

It's been done

doesn't work

I agree I got into bot lane once brand shifted there and now I play support exclusively with champions like Brand Bard Karma Nautilus Velkoz TahmKench . I know the idea that support can peel and teamfight is unimaginable but if you nerf them out you make their mains leave support role and new players see support as a slave role and prefer playing different role. Now instead of nerfing champions like Brand how bout we nerf Blitzcrank at all elo's blitz has been #1 support with 53%+ wr but the 50% wr brand is apparently requiring the nerfs for some reason?

Bladerunner77772 votes

I mean honestly, I would prefer to lane against Brand (as Nami) any day vs laning against something like Janna or Soraka which are the boringest lanes of all time.

I agree, we need more female support booty.

  • Carry supports already nerfed

  • Supports are already mostly cheap

  • This post doesn't address anything about the boring game play patterns in the role or the boring itemization.

  • They already tried force feeding support into people's faces for a month. Only showed initial improvement during that month, but little retention.

Support is the least popular role because it has the least influence on the game Mid is most popular role because it has the highest influence on game I know a shocker...

interaction also means fun

Why your suggestion is garbage in Short

  1. Making supports cheaper does nothing to change it

  2. The whole aknowledgment is for 3 year olds and again does nothing to change it (Do you need Dora exploler to say GJ MADLIFE every time you hook) there is also enough fking aknowledgment good supports are appreciated

  3. Nerfing any support literaly lowers their influence on the game

  4. Introducing people to the role doesnt mean that they ll stay in a role (Also how the fk are you planning to do that) Hey support role is awesome play it (ITS NOT) YEah have you heard how awesome it is !!! hahahah having so much fun awesome!

Now there are ways in making Support role more important.** I ll list suggest some improvements**

Add Portal between botlane and toplane on Summoner rift. 5 minute cooldown (Could be more could be less). Requires a ritual (5 diff rituals all with diff dynamics)

Example Teleport Ritual Number 1. Move in a Star shape then auto attack a mushroom whish spawns in the middle and viola you just teleported to toplane/bottomlane Only 1 player can be teleported at a time unless you do some cute talista/tahm stuff. This would mostly be used by support to surprise gank toplane (Influence increased)

Now you could see in **advance **what Teleport Ritual ll spawn. Some are easier to pass. Some are faster to pass. Some are easier to obstruct etc

Of course Teleport ritual could be interrupted by enemies entering an area or CCing you at which point they can finish a ritual themself from the place you left off (If you die or they move you away from area)

Another suggestion. Add Denying to the game Imagine a keystone / Botlane minion rework / starting item rework (item 3301

There are multiple ways of adding denying into league

Add keystone which would be used pretty much only on supports (You could make it require previous supporty masteries to prevent abuse) It could have a idk 15 sec cooldown. And it would set free allied minion granting you gold and exp while enemies cries (Yes set free, not kill, supports are helping kappa just like ivern)

Or change how the botlane Minion wave works. Introduce 9 minions 3/9 which can be denied. New type of minions. AT which point Riot could increase back botlane tower health since having more minions in botlane would indirectly mean that its still the easiest lane to push (Regarding laneswaps firstblood tower)

Or you know rework this item 3301 non interactive item but this is suggestion i like the least

This are the ways you could increase the support influence on the game and make them interact with it more I could give you more suggestion like Vehicles etc but this shall give you an idea

Supports have a high degree of influence on the game. It is not a popular role because most of the time you build utility (ardent censor, mikaels, locket, redemption) instead of damage, and its more fun to rack up large numbers of kills.

Riot has considered making supports more available to try to attract more people to the role. OP's suggestion about reducing IP costs is similar to that experiment. http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/free-rotation/extra-supports-free-champion-rotation

I think adding a "shields" section to the end game screen is a much needed addition. There is already a "healing" stat, so it would be satisfying to see how much damage I blocked with shields as well. Most people jump to the "damage dealt to champions" stat and judge a player based on that number alone. Having another stat to point to in order to prove effectiveness is a good idea in my opinion.

Adding "denying" to the game is an interesting option. It would make supports feel more valuable and interactive in lane. Maybe soraka and janna wouldn't play so far back if they had the option of denying experience/gold with last hitting.

Alright i am diamond1/master player and i ll give you rough estimate on each role influence on the game

mid 22% (You can beat enemy laner you can roam everywhere) jungle 21% Adc 20% top 20% Support 17% (And thats being generous its probably lower)

I completly agree that there should be a dmg prevented stat (Counts kayle ulti sheilds etc). Infact i made a suggestion for this stat like twice

Supports have the lowest interaction with the game + Most of support have 0 mechanics Now you dont seem to agree with that. Then how come support is the least popular role in ranked where people play for rating even in high elo? there are fking insert dull champion 1 trick ponies so its not like they cant play dull champions (Not saying all supports are boring either)

I suggested A Portal. Because after that middle is no longer center of a map (Everything would be a center however portal would have some cooldown). Which means mid popularity drops. Since top can now finaly influence a botlane its popularity increases to. And then again Portals would mostly be used by supports so that they can roam gank top with their cc.

Right of the bat portal would be a massive buff to pantheon. He normaly bullies lane. Bully laner > Port botlane > ulti mid > get back to top kill laner again > teleport (summoner spell) botlane again XD

While someone like fiora wouldnt even like it Since she has no cc

Have you ever seen Leona gameplay? Riven uses like 5k abilities per game leona uses 100 There are some machups which leona default loses and cant dive in a single time until jungler comes

So yeah have fun just sitting in brush doing nothing

Your influence assessments are interesting, and raise a couple questions in my mind: 1) if you're playing at a lower ELO, then would support influence be higher? (For example, in bronze through gold when no one knows how to position well, then blitzcrank's influence on the game is likely higher than 17%) 2) at higher tiers of play when the vision game becomes extremely important to the success of a team, then does a support's influence level increase? and 3) is it worth debating which role has the "lowest" influence on the game when the percentage of influence we are talking about is roughly 3% as per your estimate?

If you think about supports like soraka, tahm, and sona, then it's true that they are not mechanically difficult champions. I would hesitate to say that they have low interactions with the game when soraka and tahm have global (or nearly global) ultimates. Mechanical simplicity may lead people away from the support role, but if they want to play someone with more mechanical difficulty they can pick up lulu or bard.

A portal sounds like an awesome idea! I love the idea of being able to roam more and make more plays.

Poske1 votes

Huh every time I play in low elo. (Happend last time on smurf placements) I just steal people roles and carry them regardless if its ok or not. There is no point in supporting when i can do 3x dmg average midlaner/potato in gold can

If i am playing at lower elo my influence is unstoppable and its really unlikely we can lose as long as they dont have smurfs themself

My general influence in low elo is extremly high regardles of what am i playing. But with Katarina/yasuo for example i can confidently 1vs5 delete everyone in low elo or almost everyone. So why would I play support? XD

I cant even compare my Kata in low elo to my thresh in low elo. Kata would end up with 25 kills in 25 minutes. while with thresh i might struggle hooking players who dont know how to dodge supporting players who arent worth supporting and making plays which my team cant take advantage of because they are low elo players.

And note I am like madlife level thresh and scarra level katarina...

Blitz influence on the game compared to other supports varies alot. He literaly has just 1 useful ability and if he doesnt land those 30 hooks he would cast per game his influence drops. I generaly hate having blitz as a support because he is so godamn straightforward but he is performing the best in master tier according to some sites

If you want supports with good influence there is Sona, Soraka. Sona is the strongest lategame support in the game and I dont have to talk about soraka.

Do you see mechanical difficulty driving players from lee sin/yasuo/riven/thresh or do you see the opposite?

League needs more mechanical supports and some simplistic ones Like Blitz,Leo need a rework

Neither of them are mages. Blitzcrank gets smashed if he goes anyway else, and so does Leona (who is also not a support). Naut is efficient top, jungle, or support. They're healthy for the meta, as opposed to doing 50% of your health level 2.

So in other words, supports can't "hurt you". If it "hurts", it needs to be removed from support.

News flash: If you built damage on Blitz, he'd fist 1/2 your health in his rotation. He just doesn't because people don't, but he CAN. People are so delusional.

That's the natural course of things in a damage meta where tanking doesn't work.

I main ADC but my 2nd role is supp but the thing i don't like about playing supp is that you can't really carry on your own like i could as ADC. If your Mid/Top is 0/5 there is nothing you can do neither but i feel less dependent from my team, while supp is "watch the flames" all the time.

About the acknowledgement, It's mostly because i directly play with them in lane but i really appreciate support players who take their role seriously like i take mine because I think support is the role with the least amount of "mains", most people don't think about how much you can do wrong as support like you said, many ADC get honored and celebrated as heroes but the supports behind them never get anything.

LBmyBB1 votes

Is there an I agree but also disagree option?

reiko571 votes

one of my first thoughts when i first started playing the game, and realized what the roles were and what hey should do- is that there should be no support, 3 solo lanes with a "home" jungle and "away" jungle. it seemed like it would make the game a lot more fun. but because it's a highly competitive game, people played it in a less fun manner and that's just the meta everyone is stuck with now. you can't force people into a role where they feel like they can't do anything and then they get flamed when things go wrong. a majority of people are not going to be comfortable with those circumstances.

Ill play support, as long as the ADC is smart enough to build damage first, not speed. . .

I've been overlooked by friends when they where looking at the graphs even though i saved them on multiple occasions. So thank you.

I think support role will be more interesting if the 'slave' feel is reduced. So far I feel support role has less income (gold and exp), must stay in bot lane and take care of your ADC (outside of special cases), keep the vision, engage/disengage, don't kill steal, etc. There are a lot of things to do, but it feels thankless and impactless because often it feels my allies don't know how to utilize the advantage (and the limitation of that advantage) provided by the support.

  1. Vision - can we have a shared responsibility for vision? I'd rather everyone to have the same capability to set up vision (without sacrificing build/gold) instead of a support with sightstone alone.
  2. Income - give assist almost as much gold as a kill? Yelled for killstealing is not a nice experience, although it's a positive effect for the match. Sometimes it tilts the ADC, sometimes it tilts me as the support (I can't help when that 20 HP Morgana walks into my Leona ult!)
  3. More visible abilities/effects - I've seen a lot of ADC not trading when Janna and Nami E is active on the ADC. I don't know if they don't know the effect of E, or they don't see it even if they know or they decide not to trade. I'd like if people is introduced to support role and champions, even they won't main the role. At least they know not only their possible lane opponent champion but also their possible ally support champion strengths.

In my opinion I think support is already an engaging and fun role. I guess people don't like it because of the pressure but I love it. If I wasn't already attached to Top and Jg I would definitely main support.

the reason i hate playing support is because of my personal reasons, like i have knowledge about the game, but i don't have any skill i guess.
