Because thresh is ranged and relic shield only executes on melee champs
Which is funny because he can attack through windwall.
Ranged attacks don't necessarily have to be projectiles.
Vel'koz and Azir's autoattacks do the same thing.
and kayle.
he is ranged when far away but changes to melee when you are close enough
The reason why Relic Shield is recommended on Thresh is because he has the lowest base armor of any champion in the game, and he does not gain any by level.
The lack of armor makes his base health even less effective, therefore it is important to give him more bonus health early on to compensate.
His passive does help him to accumulate armor over time, which continues to make the bonus health even more effective.
The best way to use Relic Shield on Thresh is to use your E to build up for max damage potential so it can easily execute. You still have to be very careful and precise to get it right.
Yeah, although thresh looks like he is melee by whacking people with his little hook thing :D, he is considered ranged. This means that you cannot execute minions but if you last hit them with relic stacks it will still give money to nearest ally. I, personally, like to take coin instead of relic due to a couple of facts.
Last hitting with thresh can be painful. Often times with relic the adc ends up killing the minion I was going to kill to use a stack simply because they can also kill it by the time I can. Other times I just miss the cs because I can't execute.
Coin is great for the team and for cdr. I think the first form of coin is like 5% cdr and the completed item is 10% (not sure). Great for pumping out hooks faster. Also the active on talisman ascension (coin) speeds up all allies around you. Pretty damn good for engaging, running, roaming... anytime you need to get somewhere fast it's awesome.
Unfortunately with coin you are a bit less tanky. At low elo (where I'm at, and assuming you are as well) it probably doesn't make much of a difference in terms of survivability. Which is yet another reason to take coin. Hope this helps :D
you need to just last hit the creep... you wont proc execute on relic shield due to thresh being a ranged champ. using the passive on E helps with this... but as long as you last hit the creep you can still proc the heal and gold share of the relic shield... also this is why its recommended to take AD marks as thresh to help with this....
best rune set up with highest win % is currently
9 ad reds 9 scaling hp seals 9 flat mr blues 3 armor quints
currently with this rune page it has a 55.12% win % http://champion.gg/champion/Thresh
yeah thats where i get the build path from just clueless as to how it worked cause i can never really use it due to carrys last hitting first
well its a pain cuz i know its recommended item on him but you can start
into
is actually good on him when i play thresh ill start
and start to build the other half of
and when i have enough gold (typically mid game) ill finish the
and sale
Doesn't his auto attack switch to melee if you move into melee range. Like I see him grab his hook and not swing it by the chain.
I get how thresh works with relic and why now. Just wish I knew this like 4 games ago and that the items had a red spot on the execute passive description or something.
With knowing that thresh can't execute minions wouldn't spell thief be better? Your gold production is greater and with a ranged auto you should be able to proc on CD pretty well. Then buy health item faster... Plus every adc I support with thresh freaks out when I miss a minion and make it really hard to farm with him. Seems like the pay off of shield over spell thief is not worth it. Thoughts?
doesnt work that way anymore now its last hitting to proc relic which is why im not longer building it on him i go coin
How does that work out for you?
Great if your a passive laner like myself i can see spellthiefs being better if you wanna be more aggressive

The animation changes. His status as a ranged champion doesn't.

The first three words of Relic Shield's passive is "melee basic attacks".
I don't think it can be much clearer.
I love when the asshole shows up late. Considering a couple things. Thresh still goes into a melee stance or animation when moved into melee range, a kill will still proc the gold share, this use to work, and not everyone marks there calendar for the patch and clears time to read every last patch note can all be taken into account as to why this would be in question. Lets not forget that Riot tends to put Red markers that say things like MELEE ONLY or RANGED ONLY on items when the opposite tries to buy it. So it would stand to reason that you could expect the little warning label for it to let you know it is not going to work to your full benefit because of your ranged auto.
Shows up late?
I posted when the thread appeared a month ago and it was necroed by the OP.
At you referring to yourself just joining the party? I'm confused.

Let's talk down to people about something that is now established (Asshole).
Sharp shooting a comment a week after it was posted (late).
Didn't realize the post was dead and I'm not allowed to comment anymore. Oops.
