The point of masteries

I was kinda wondering, what is the point masteries?

Currently, there are 2 ways, how to customize champ to your play style a little.

  1. Runes -> One of IP Drains, originally (unless I'm mistaken) designed to have "big impact". (Not a game deciding, but it is felt)
  2. Masteries -> In previous seasons, masteries were only minor power element. Just something to improve your lasthits, making sure that this enemy %$!# didn't escape with 1hp again, but it wasn't nearly as impactfull as runes.

In the preseason 6, masteries got reworked and now they have so much power it could be made into item.

But my question is why do we even have masteries? For example SMITE doesn't even have anything like runes and masteries. Dunno about dota. Almost every mage takes either Thundercat's Decree or Deathfire touch, adcs take warlords or fervor etc. So there is no actual difference. Most players are using same masteries.

As I've said before, the current Mastery System was implemented to give the illusion of control, or choice. Unfortunately, that's all it ever was, an illusion. Whenever you make a mastery page for a champion during champ select, it's never a matter of "Which mastery do I need over the other?" It's a matter of "Which of these two masteries is useless on my champ?" That isn't choice, that's shoehorning, and I for one wish Riot would stop pretending otherwise.
