How do you increase your normals mmr?

Hyu Mungus··3 votes·4,106 views

I ended season 7 as a Gold 3 and I'm just wondering how to raise my norms mmr so Im actually able to play against players of the same skill level or higher. I want to be able to improve by playing against these players as getting matched constantly with silver, bronze, and unranked don't really help me improve as I find myself stomping more than not. So I ask how do you increase your norms mmr since playing alot doesn't really change the outcome of who I play against or with.

win?

Just win more games than you lose. You'll eventually be pitted against better players and get longer queue times.

Try hard and play champions which are jacks of all trades or require targeted countering.

If they don't know that you're picking a champion which pretty much stomps the team if not target countered, then it's completely random (based on pick rate) that they pick one of your counters, and unless your counters have a mutually exclusive pick rate of > 50% (which they almost absolutely don't) then you can probably win the majority of the time.

Where as a jack of all trades will have answers for the majority of the champion pool, meaning that you can probably just roll over people. There should be enough of them that one of their hard counters will not be very popular at the time.

For the moment, just play Presence of Mind Kassadin Probably a rune page along these lines. http://leagueoflegends.com/en/featured/preseason-update/8100-8112?build=10220026

Kassadin ? you wanna win mid without trying? play Lucian

deadlychuck1 votes

Sure, but you can win the game without trying with Kass when your ult is free for 5 seconds after you level or get a kill.

Even though, i'm pretty sure winning a lane has like a 90% correlation with winning the game at this point

kassadin has to scale and is hard countered by any AD champion tho, lucian shits on you for free.

and yes, win lane usually = win game as far as mid is concerned imo, which is why lucian is the obvious pick lol.

deadlychuck1 votes

Ironic that the mage has to scale, but the marksmen doesn't.

take jinx mid and she gets ass raped, take lucian mid and you wanna call the cops on him after 2 minutes.

im pretty sure your mmr in normals is the same as your mmr in ranked. obviously you will get players that are lower ranked than you because most people playing norms are lower elo. but if youre like bronze 4 the chances of you getting a gold+ lane opponent are practically zero unless theyre premade with a bronze or the lobby is just that shallow.

if you are looking to improve your gameplay DO NOT PLAY NORMALS. people dont give a shit about normals and you will get noobs on both teams.

deadlychuck4 votes

Your normals MMR is not the same as your ranked MMR.

I play against plat-diamond players, but still place into like silver the times that I've play enough ranked to place...

Though, it's just as common that people don't give a shit about ranked either and there will be noobs on both teams. The only real difference is the promos and displaying your approximate relative skill level relative to the rest of the region.

are you sure about that? i started bronze 4 last season and my normals rarely had anyone above silver 2, 2 to 3 weeks to the end of the season i started my rush for gold and all of a sudden im laning against plat adcs in normals when my ranked mmr was so high id skip divisions.

edit: also created a another account recently, playing against people who are either under lvl 30 or silver 5 and lower.

deadlychuck1 votes

Well, I didn't start suddenly playing against silver players once i got through my placement matches.

Trust me, they're independent. If your MMR growth wasn't independent, then you'd literally never see improvement from the initialized MMR.

idk man another thing i forgot to mention, i never get diamond players in my games. when i queue up with friends who are diamond tho... lets just say the game gets alot harder.

deadlychuck1 votes

Well it averages your MMR, so obviously they're going to get harder...

I honestly don't see how this is at all meaningful information considering that both your starting and end point were both significantly lower than diamond. So even if you're now playing at a gold MMR, averaged with diamond MMR you're still going to be significantly below average in that match.

MistaFarenheit1 votes

my points is that when i was very low ranked and playing by myself i never got anyone in my games higher than low/mid silver. now that i climbed a bit (particularly during the period when my MMR was ridiculously higher than normal) and ESPECIALLY when i queue up with friends who could be considered "high elo" the quality of my opponents and matchmade teammates went up by a considerable margin.

deadlychuck1 votes

I still don't see how this is at all relevant...

**This is a true statement, no matter if you're right or wrong. ** Play with better teammates, and you will play against better opponent.

MistaFarenheit1 votes

thats my point exactly. if im queued with a diamond player, but ranked mmr doesnt matter, why do we get matched with other diamond players regularly when it never happens to me solo?

edit: im just saying if i play 20 normals today none of them will have a diamond ranked player in them, if i queue up with my friend we will get a diamond player on the enemy team guaranteed.

edited edit: meaning ranked mmr matters in normals.

deadlychuck1 votes

No, that means that you're queued up with a higher MMR player...

I don't see how this is at all relevant. If I queue up with my silver friends they generally find themselves playing against plat players.

It's not exactly strange that a diamond ranked player would have an unranked MMR similar to that of other diamond ranked players.

the point im getting at is why does it do that if ranked mmr doesnt matter. i have no idea how it works it just seems like ranked mmr has some sort of role in the matchmaking if having a diamond player on the team automatically puts a diamond player on the enemy team. like the above post says normals are stacked to give as close to a 50/50 chance to win as possible. meaning if one team has a high elo player it will look to add some1 of equal or greater skill to the opposing team in order to hit that mark.

You want to raise it? I want to drop it. Ranked games are literally easier to win than normal games because in ranked i can't get matched against master tier players and above. There is no such restriction in normal games.

deadlychuck1 votes

Ironically, it's also harder to raise your MMR in normals.

Where in ranked you can hotstreak to the next bracket, in normals every game matters so a 50% win rate will keep you at the same MMR.

You are playing against your skill level. MMR in norms is meant to produce a 50 /50 chance of winning by grouping players of similar skill together. In ranked you are stratified by the ranking system and can climb as the rank overrides the MMR function of norms. If ranked were matched like norms then you would find it almost impossible to climb as after about 15 games you would be locked into a 50/50 ratio. That would be really bad for the game as part of the experience is the ability to climb in ranked, and people hard locked would not stay with it very long. You could "win" more and improve your MMR, but in norms its really difficult because of the stacking of teams to produce the 50/50 win chance. Ranked matches have no bearing on norms just as norms don't affect ranked matches.

The best thing you can do is premake with better players to increase the MMR of a match and play up to that level. Playing meta champs and builds to increase your chances for a win also helps.

As far as those guys in bronze and silver in your games it just means that they are the same MMR/ELO as you in norms. They may not have spent as much time grinding ranked thus the lower rank, but as far as norms go they are your skill level.

This all comes from a service ticket I sent to riot in the past asking essentially the same question.

I have actually sent a ticket twice on the subject. Once about 5 years ago, and again about 10 months ago. Both times I received pretty much the same answer. So I suggest sending a service ticket and just asking how mmr in norms works. They will gladly explain it.

dont lose vs low/mid elo, go even with your elo.
