Ranked System LP Rewards Needs Reworking

The ranked system of play needs a lot of improvement. Right now, as far as solo/duo queue is concerned, the game is much less about skill level and more about luck; the attitudes of your teammates, their ability to comprehend and play this game, etc. There should be a different mathematic to how LP is gained and, more importantly, lost.

At this point, and generally speaking, if you win you gain LP based on a calculation related to your elo vs your opponents' elos. If you lose, it's the same thing. However, due to the fact that no matter how well or how poorly you do in a ranked game has any affect at all on the loss or gain of LP, there is no risk/reward for trying harder. For example, if mid gets behind and starts feeding terribly, thus attracting all the negativity from the rest of his or her team, mid is likely to either afk or simply start to feed purposely. They know they are probably going to lose so they don't care to put any more effort in, or perhaps wish to make their team lose on purpose. The LP they lose is going to be the same no matter what happens.

However, if there were a different set of mathematics involved in the collection of LP, the following could be an example of how gameplay and team play changes and is stronger: LP lost is based off of a combined calculation of game KDA ratio (where kills and assists may grant, for instance, 3 points a piece while deaths subtract 1 point per occurrence); objectives obtained, if dealt the killing blow, grants 2 points, whereas an assist with an objective grants 1 point; CS could grant a number of points divided into the total player's CS at the end of the game. There could be other ways points are calculated as well, but these are some examples I have given for the sake of argument.

Post game, the tally of points each player has accumulated can lessen the amount of LP lost, should that player lose the game. In this manner all players are encouraged to continue playing to the best of their ability as opposed to giving up to surrender at 20. Someone who has reached a certain number of points by the end of the game may only lose 5 LP instead of 18, or 20. This way there is some kind of reward for continuing to play and to do well, instead of giving up or feeding kills to the other team purposely, or carrying the game 20/6/12 and still losing 20 LP just like the guy who afk'd. As far as whether or not this should affect LP received by players who are winning the game, perhaps it could as well, but as far as gains go I see that to be decently balanced at this point. But in this I see a way to keep serious players who deserve to be higher rank closer to their goal and keep people from losing heart altogether.

These are all just rough ideas that I have put together, but I think they deserve some consideration from the developers. Let me know what you all think.

As you'll notice from the post, it's not about receiving higher gains, it's about receiving less of a penalty when losing games but actually performing well.

It is a team game, but the changes I am suggesting would actually help the team community. It would cement the team more firmly and keep everyone trying their best. Did you read my post or just the title..?

I happen to agree with your post. The biggest let down to me over the years is that no matter how hard you push and carry the team, your team can still throw the whole game. Because your hoping your team mate throws that stun or use there ult, and so on so you can end the game, but when they don't do it your left with luck for the most part. Another thing that made me cry once before was when I won 5 games in row and on the 6th one I loss, and most of all the points I earned from trying are gone. I mean it feels less worth trying because once you get that one loss you lose all those hard earned points.

I appreciate your agreement. I feel that I shouldn't be the only one feeling like there should be something that further sets apart players who are good and try to win vs players who just end up trolling so they can spam surrender every chance they get. I personally think it would improve players' attitudes and keep people from getting so angry that they troll.

You maybe have performed well or decently but you didn't win so you still deserve the LP loss. You gain roughly what you lose, you meant to lose that game? oh sorry you lose very little LP meant to win? man you will take a nice hit. Meant to lose but win? Wow here is a lot of LP! you did good. Meant to win and win? Nice win, we knew you would so here is average LP. I don't know. I think the LP system is pretty decent. if you win more then lose you usually will climb.

You will only climb if you win the very next game after your first loss. If you loss the 2nd game after the first loss you drop more then the amount of games you just won. in other words if you win 5 games in a row and loss 2 you lost more points then you have earned. I mean that's some messed up math in my book. The amount of points with win vs loss are pretty bad right now. 2 losses pretty much = 3 or more losses.

If i make 20 LP per win and lose 15 per lose and i win 5 games and lose 2 i hit series then fail my series going to about 75 lp. Now if i win a game lose win lose i would only have 10 LP since 20-15= 5+20=25-15=10 i still netted half a win for losing just as much as i won. Now i 9 out of 10 gain more LP then i loss since i guess my MMR belongs higher? Maybe for you it is the other way around you win 2 and lose 2 but say you get 15 a win and lose 20. then you net -10. But unless you maybe gain 10 per game and lose like 20 a loss 5 wins and 2 loses wont net you a negative LP gain. even with 10 lp per game that is 50 and minus 40 for 2 loses you still net positive 10. Also since when do you automatically lose everything you gain if you lose twice in a row? my LP loss stays relatively the same for the first/2nd loss and i still have netted way more with a 5 game win streak then id lose with those 2 games.

All luck in climbing? My ass lmfao.

I admit to smurfing. I climbed out of bronze from bronze 4 in less than 2 weeks.

I had the same luck with everyone else in the division. I had better skill. I climbed they stayed.

I climbed from gold 4 to gold 1 in a week. Up and down from g1 to g2 numerous times, but over the last month it's just turned into an uphill battle. Am I a good player? Yes. I have bad games just like everyone else, but to have a 30% win ratio now over my last 20 games is just ridiculous. Have you ever played Halo: Reach? The ranked system is forgiving enough that if you lose but perform well, you lose less than you would have. I think this is a far more rewarding way of going about it and actually encourages people to try even if losing hard.

But looking at your match history, I can see that in the games where you did well, there were very little games that you lost. Past 4 games you lost, you went 7-14, 0-9, 6-11, 1-13.

So as of what I've been seeing, your W/L does represent how you performed rather well.

If you use op.gg's mmr calculator, you will find that the OP's MMR is apparently estimated to be lower than the average of his division. That means the system deems that the OP does not belong in their tier/division and unless they can increase their mmr by winning more than losing, the system will decide that the OP needs to be lowered.

I was honestly expecting the OP to be diamond and a victim of the LP clamping, but since they're gold my hypothesis was supported by op.gg and the system is in fact working as intended.
