there is no logical fallacy here. im talking about a specific case of the majority of the team disagreeing with an off meta pick, and the lack of communication of this pick to your own team.
Majority of the team, 2 other players, one other person, or no one; it does not matter anyone else's demands, you are not required nor can you be punished for not heeding them. So long as you communicate your intention to the team, and attempt to assuage their fears over your off-meta pick, then all is fine. If they choose to continue harassing/griefing/arguing with you over it, they are either free to dodge the queue or continue playing the game.
Tell me, which of the two is the more morally insidious:
- Having freedom of individual choice and agency, regardless of mob mentality
- Acquiescing to mob mentality, and severely crippling individual liberties of decision making.
I'll give you a hint. One of them negatively impacts everyone (including the mob) both morally and empirically; the other only negatively affects the "mob" emotionally.
im not talking about a single fucking player not liking your pick.
selfish entitlement would be thinking that you can pick whatever the fuck you want without regard to your own team for your own personal ammusement at the detriment of the chances of winning the game in a competitive que
False. Selfish entitlement is other, completely random strangers having the audacity to dictate what you can and cannot play in a game of 5 random strangers put together. And yes, league is here for all our personal "amusement" and entertainment; not just yours and not just mine.
If the rules and guidelines set forth by Riot specifically stated something along the lines of: "at no such time will any player do anything outside of the ordinary, as dictated by whatever basic, standardized and cookie-cutter 'meta-game' that season, that player will be punished for going against any stranger's demands that they conform to the status quo" -- then you'd have an actual argument. But it does not say anything remotely like that.
Your chances of winning a game are roughly 50/50 when you load into the nexus fountain, regardless of champion picks. At a micro level of course, there are champion counterpicks in lobby, and this actually is where off-meta decisions tend to excel, because they can throw the enemy team offguard quite easily, especially to an experienced off-meta player.
The champions you pick do not always guarantee success or failure, it's highly dependent on your individual skill level and your mental fortitude as a person to weather through hard match-ups or early game setbacks. Picks rarely have anything to do with the outcome; instead, the more likely scenario is other players becoming aggravated and toxic before the game has even loaded -- because they simply cannot handle, cannot fathom someone playing outside of their narrow-minded view of how league "should be played".
and not communicating your pick choice to your teammates will result in toxicity because of that. if its just a single player not liking your pick youre not forced to switch.
again. its a majority decision.
Again, wrong. This is not mob rule / herd mentality -- you are playing with four other completely randomized individual human beings with their own abilities, decision making and desires. No one individual's demands are greater than another; and because of this, since the guidelines set forth by Riot are purposefully vague, open-ended and actually encourage experimentation and creativity with champion picks and builds, you have personal choice as to what you play and how you play it -- so long as you actually play and do your best with it.
Sure, you can and should communicate with your lobby teammates pre-game, but the final decision is yours and yours alone, and you are not liable to be punished simply because someone else or even everyone else in your queue disagrees with you. That is not a just, moral or fairly balance way to govern individual player choice.
well suck it up, because this is a TEAM GAME and team choices have precidence over individual choices. if you dont like it, dont que up for ranked games.
Just because it is a team game, does not mean mob mentality rules. Remember, what is "meta" today can shift just as easily into "off-meta" tomorrow; things from previous seasons that are still very viable and possible to play for a variety of roles and builds, can still be played today even though now considered "off-meta" or "out of meta".
For example: if you are a player who just started League this season, and began playing Ranked, you would have a much more limited concept in your mind of the "meta-game" and how League is or "should" be played, versus someone with many more years of experience.
Then you also delve into the aspect of OTP's or diehard champion mains, who perform their best with one maybe two champions and fervently play them more consistently than most other players would in any given season. These players now also are under fire for "off-meta playing" partly because of auto-fill, and greatly in part because of those, like yourself, that abhor anything you believe to be subpar by some ethereal standard created in an osmosis-like trickle down from LCS, twitch streamers, Korean players, and the like.
Off-meta, out-of-meta, meta; it makes no difference what you play and where you play it; it makes all the difference on how you work together with any given team composition both emotionally, and mentally. It is more important to keep calm, cool, collected, regardless of what your random queue'd teammates choose to play or how to play it.
##Infact, the burden of toxicity actually lays with the players who start harassing and griefing another for playing off-meta -- and it starts in champ select. If I pick something foreign to your concept/worldview of "proper league play", and you immediately begin to rage with anger, frustration and harass me; it is you who is liable to be penalized, particularly if you exhibit that in the in-game chat or by trolling out of some adolescent need to show your "displeasure" in not having everyone follow your ideology.
