Further updates to old champions
TL:DR Nocturne is outclassed and offers very little when behind. Other champions have amazing characters with terrible quotes.
Hi friends. Im enjoying the updating of old champions that are rolling out. However, I never see my favourite champion Nocturne mentioned. He was created in a time where carries were more immobile, securing objectives as a group was less common and ambient AoE damage wasnt as hard to survive.
My biggest concern with Noc is he doesnt have any real fallback pattern. Early on in the game, his steroids (AD and MS on q, attack speed on w) allow him to fight with alot of damage, despite his fragility. However, if he is not ahead, he cant safely farm his jungle to catch back up. He has very weak escape if caught and does not scale well at all with building tanky. His base damage quickly becomes outclassed by midgame. He offers a highly conditional cc effect that can be reduced by tenacity and potential vision denial on an objective steal attempt. Other melee champions offer far more (Rek'Sai does Nocturnes job better, while offering tremor sense and aoe knockups if not building damage)
I also feel that his spell shield holds a large part of his power budget without achieving what its designed to do. A 1 second shield that absoebs any spell is a great skill for a marksman like Sivir, because she has the room to use it with more precision in what it blocks. Noc's, on the other hand, is very easy to waste in a large scale fight where randomly thrown skills can consume it before an easily applied cc peels him off his target, with limited options to reengage.
I like the archetype of Nocturne as the Eternal Nightmare: a horrifying creature that stalks lone people through the jungle and murders them with umbra blades. However, his kit has fallen far behind today's League of Legends, and i dont believe new items can really fix this discrepancy. Melee carries, which he was designed to be, require extensive tools to survive in the midst of a fight, be it massive mobility and shielding, untargetability, innate tankiness and sustain or mind-numbing amounts of damage with a refusal to die.
I have a few ideas on how to modernise Nocturnes kit. The first would be changing his spell shield. His passive is strong for the jungle (and decent in lane aside from making him inadvertently push with no escapes to fall back on), his q is very strong early on with both aspects tending to fall off as the game goes on, and his ult is very unique to him.
His fear tether could use a change in reliability. My proposal is to allow him, should the tether reach 66% completion, to reactivate e to swap to the targets other side, to allow him to fear the victim away from safety should he choose too. This would also help Nocturne in lategame teamfights, as he could distance himself from a peeling support.
My other suggestion is a complete rework of his w. As I mentioned previously, the spell shield belongs on a champion that can keep their range and use the skill with more precision. I really like the passive and active attack speed, and would likr it to remain. The new active could be something along the lines of: "Nocturne shrouds himself in darkness for 2 seconds, becoming untargetable and gaining 50% cc reduction. Whilst in the black mist, Nocturne can move and attack normally. Auto attacks against champions reduce the cooldown by 1 second" An additional idea for this spooky ability would be to allow Nocturne to pass through walls while it is active, allowing him to come up on any jungler through the shadows.
A last thought on Nocturne is a small buff for when he is forced to stay with his team. When one pops paranoia and jumps a carry at the backline, one flies right over thr front line, which is an invitation to turn around and blow up the squishy assassin with no incentive to build tank. Therefore, I think Nocturne should be stealthed to champions while flying through the air, and reappear once impacting his target. This will force the enemy to be more aware once the darkness receedes.
On another note, reading the Shadow and Fortune story makes Olaf look really cool, until you read his voiceover ingame. Similarly, Singed, Alistar, Miss Fortune and other old champs have very outdated VOs. Is it possible to redo their voices and add alot more lines, including interactions with champions and items? Prioritising the ones that will not be visually updated for a long time.
