Viability of self-sustain and Grievous Wounds

I noticed something today while trying out reworked Aatrox. Every single lane has an item that can apply Grievous Wounds for the entire duration of a fight. Two of these items cost about 1000 gold, and both of them build into perfectly solid items. I haven't seen enough of the new Morellonomicon to judge it yet, so I'll leave it out for now. And I'll give Ignite a pass, because it's a utility spell.

Within the first 10 minutes of the game, I couldn't do anything to my lane opponent; my opponent first-back bought a Bramble Vest, removing any and all potential I had to fight back against my opponent for the rest of lane phase. Now, that's fine and all, I could just not fight the top laner and let my team deal with them, taking out the other targets that I should be focusing anyways in the skirmishes and teamfights that followed.

Then the Marksman built Executioner's Calling.

For 900 gold, an entire part of my character's identity was essentially removed from the game, my Blade of the Ruined King was... ruined, and I was essentially locked out of the concept of investing in a Spirit Visage.

I understand healing would be ridiculous with no checks or balances in place. But I think it's a bit unfair that champions that rely on self-sustain can be essentially locked out for the price of a one-recall buy.

I'm not sure how to fix it; maybe an item active, maybe a rework to the way Grievous works. The easiest way would be to take away the Bramble Vest and Executioners Calling entirely, so everyone has to buy their full item, not just Morellonomicon users. They all seem at least somewhat problematic. But I certainly don't like an entire class of champions being countered by less than the cost of a recall.

But to buy, it does cost them having to recall or die...unless it's Ornn.

Edit And Aatrox is crap and very unrewarding now after his passive was changed to the garbage it is now.
