He is an AP Burst Mage. Not a tank. Cool downs too long even with 40% CDR.

wtf?

Cho'Gath is very viable as a tank, thanks to his high base damages, true damage, and CC. In addition, he gains free health with his ultimate. Why not take advantage of this?

Rod of Ages, boots, Frozen Heart, Abyssal Scepter, Thornmail/Randuin/Dead Man's Plate, Spirit Visage.

The thing is with the fact that he gains free health, many times it is better to build AP, as he already gets free tankyness. That does not mean that building him tanky is not viable, with tank items he is one of the tankiest beasts there. Or better yet, you can get a mix of AP and tank items.

No persistent threat. Once his cool downs are blown he can be ignored for a long time.

The threat is his massive CC and his Ult that will rip through you. You don't need a lot of AP to have him work. Building him as a burst mage is much easier to kill him with 6 stacks especially.

Not if you have a team to follow up once you use all of Cho's CC.

AP Cho is much more suitable for carrying alone, but is also much easier to kill.
