Blitzcrank + math = sadness

Hey all,

Just crunched some numbers on Blitzcranks new w. (Note that I am... was? a blitz main.) It is pretty clear just from watching his movespeed numbers that the decay from his overdrive is exponential. By taking my base movespeed (with runes and masteries) of 361, and using the highest number displayed after hitting overdrive (513, note that this is only a 70% speed boost with the skill at level 5... it is possible that it really hits 90 but it falls to 70% so fast the UI does not get updated in time...) I figured that the half-life of the decay is about .8 seconds. This is based on the how long it takes my movespeed to drop below 400 (after 2s) and below 370 (after 3s).

OK blah blah blah you can integrate the exponential decay function [integrate 361+152e^(-xlog(2)/.8)dx from 0 to 5] on wolfram alpha and add to that the 2411.5 (241 is my movespeed during the slow) to get a total distance moved of 2339.5 or so. Compare this to just walking for 6.5s (so 3616.5) of 2346. Conclusion? Overdrive is now a self-slow. This is at rank 5, so rank 1 is a HUGE self slow. I guess this is what Riot was going for in the nerf but... that's pretty harsh in my opinion. You literally have 1s of significantly increased speed, 4s of basically your normal speed, and then 1.5s of slow. Ouch.

Will I still play Blitz? Maybe, against Sona.. (lol). But probably not much. Poor robot, beep boop :'(.

TL:DR, if you play Blitz don't use overdrive for traveling, chasing, or escaping.. just for tower smashing.

I actually agree. What Riot should have done was either make the move speed decay or make him be slowed once the boost ends. Id prefer the one with the minor slow, but no decay, because that accentuates the ability's purpose in helping Blitz position for a hook.

Ok buddy your first mistake is assuming that the overdrive follows an exponential decay function. If that were true then you'd never actually fall back to your base movement speed.

If his MS followed the function you gave: 361+152e^(-xlog(2)/.8) Then it would take infinite time for your move speed to fall back to 361, which is obviously does not in game.

I'm not sure exactly how Riot coded the MS decay but I bet it's just a linear decay.

And at any rate, there's a reason that overdrive isn't as good now. Before it was just a 100% uptime massive MS steroid. Miss a hook as blitz? Doesn't matter, just run down your opponent with 2x their movespeed and knock them up. In fact, why even try to hook them from a distance (like you're supposed to?). Just run up to them, knock them up, then hook them.

^I seriously hated this shit, and I'm glad they changed it. A blitz in lane automatically zones you to your tower just by sitting in a bush, and it was stupid that he could also just press W and run you down in lane without ever needing to land a hook.

It is not linear my friend. As I said it drops below 400 after only 2s, and below 370 after 3s. That means a whole 2s of the buff is spent at less than 3% increased movespeed. I understand that an exponential decay would never reach my origional movespeed, but Riot obviously just removes the buff after 5s. The function I gave is either correct or very close. At least it is WAY close than a linear function lol. Nice try though...

All right it may not be linear, but that also doesn't make it exponential decay. Anyways, it doesn't matter what the decay function is, the rest of my point about his old W being unhealthy still stands.

Blitz should have to land his hook in order to engage on a target that's far away, not just run them down with 100% uptime W (which is exactly what he was doing before).

Oh, I never argued that the w was fine before. It was op and I saw this nerf coming months ago. All I am saying is that I think they nerfed it a little TOO hard, considering as it is now useless except for smashing turrets. I like what Junglerboy16 said, that one or the other would have been sufficient.

One of two fixes should be made:

  1. Remove the self-slow
  2. Make the decay linear

I'm not even a Blitzcrank player, and this is pretty obvious to me. It amazes me that nerfing the W dropped Blitzcrank's winrate from like 53% to 48.5%. I'm OK with nerfing the ability, since Blitzcrank was clearly doing pretty well, but it stinks when they make a change that suddenly makes a champion feel so bad. (At least, if the champion wasn't actually broken.)
