I miss having friends to play this game with, it's too bad they all got sick of it and quit

Nyvelle··103 votes·16,756 views

I used to have a full group I could sit with to play some games of League, but steadily they all just gave up and uninstalled because they were sick and tired of all the fun strats we could pull off getting dumpstered by Riot "We don't enforce a meta" Games.

Now it's just me, sitting here wasting half an hour here and there when I have nothing else to do, just slogging along in a boring rut waiting for something fun to happen that hopefully wont get ruined the second Riot sees something that doesn't fit into their Pro-play fantasy bullshit.

This may seem childish and a little pathetic, but boycotting LoL REALLY hursts Riot and is probably the thing to do against their dumb acts. In just a month they forced refering-missions in hope of getting new players and revoked the vast majority of perma-bans in NA to get back some more players that they already lost. Since Riot NEVER acted this way before and is pretty much still denying the downhill progression of the game, this proves that the number of players (along with Riot's revenue) is indeed decreasing greatly. Joining the movement and punishing Riot for their bullsh!t actually seems to work. If the game really feels like wasted time to you, then you can consider going to another game, waiting until Riot will wake up, IF they do wake up

They didn't "revoke" any permabans. And they didn't even touch "the vast majority" of them. They're doing an experiment with a small chunk of permabanned players to see if some of them can actually reform after being perma'd. Ya'know, out of good will, to give people a second (or fifth) chance. Not because they need 1000 toxic players (a drop in the bucket really) to boost their profits.

I warned them they were killing player innovation in their eagerness to do innovative design. In fact, their design philosophy, in general, seems to be constantly restricting player innovation.

This might be a major reason players are losing interest: the creative space for players dried up. It's all about designer innovation. In fact, even though RIOT is taking a step back and slowing down the rate of change, they assure us that they have plenty of cool new innovations in the works just ready to be introduced to the rift...

I would like to know what RIOT plans to do to support player creativity! Because this is definitely not the same thing as 'champion diversity', where you try to get every single champion playable in every single role by brute forcing uniformity!

Not just creativity, but also generally player expression.

I like using this as an example, because I'm very familiar with the before and after, but compared to the pre-rework Malzahar's whole kit, pushing, fighting, farming, everything, can be played by a single macro on your mouse. They effectively enforced the cast pattern of his skills so much, that the entirety of his Q/W/E can be considered a single ability.

On cast, you summon voidlings (based on the number of stacks), then immediately cast malefic visions on the target. After a 3 second delay, call of the void will be cast on your mouse... ^ i'm not even joking I made this a macro on my mouse and it works.

Just remember using macros are generally not allowed and can get you in trouble with Riot, so I'd eer on the side of caution when using it!

But I get your point about how certain champions are forced to have one specific combo or else you're useless. It's kinda like Syndra but she's a tiny bit more free. q, e stun, w with ball for slow, ult if you have it, if not another q e w if you can. It's kinda boring after awhile.

I mean, it's literally key input. It's no different than if I used a raspberry pi to press the same 3 keys on demand.

It's one thing if I'm comboing to say, animation cancel, but no. I'm just using a macro to repeat the same rotation 500 times a game. It's indistinguishable from physical keyboard presses for the anti-cheat software, because it requires zero in game data to preform.

Macros meant to input several keys at the same time aren't allowed under Riot's rules. It can be seen as cheating. If you used your hands to press 3 keys at the same time, then that's allowed because you physically did the three inputs.

deadlychuck1 votes

Then it's perfectly acceptable as it's being used to press the keys in a series not in parallel.

W - delay - E - delay - Q

And that's the extent of what a malzahar player now does, in literally every situation regardless of context.

That said, if i attached small pistons to my raspberry pi and used my computer to trigger physical key presses, then there's really no difference between a software and hardware approach.

Whether you set up the macro in parallel or series, you're still pressing one button which macro activates three. You yourself are not activating the three abilities with your hands, setting up a delay doesn't change that.

deadlychuck1 votes

Macros meant to input several keys at the same time aren't allowed under Riot's rules.

Yes, i'm activating 3 abilities with a single button press, but it does dramatically change if I'm not doing something that's beyond normal capabilities. For example, if I had a macro which quickly clicked on my allies portraits to quickly center the camera on them, then it's no different to if I used the keybindings (i think they're F1-F5). There's really no advantage to it, it's just accomplishing the same thing through more complicated means.

At the end of the day, if it's really that much of a concern, I can accomplish the same behavior with a contrapositive solution. What I mean is, a script that will change the input values of my key upon a condition. In this case, having input the key value. I can even add a delay onto it, so that it will not swap for say 3 seconds.

Then set my skills to "activate on key press", then just hold down the key. Then I'm pressing 3 different keys all while holding down the same physical key. And I'm activating all of them with my hands.

The solution to this isn't bureaucratic authoritarianism, the solution to this would be to not make a champion's gameplay not consistent of a single simple loop.

I feel like you just described every champion. Use your abilities in various combos, find the most effective combination, repeat, and wait for your advantage.

Personally, I feel that League of Legends is meant to be this way. It allows us as players to find the loop holes, create and innovate strategies to use within the confines of the outlined rules.

There are lots of interesting arguments about creative constraints on the web (and various hard-cover books as well) and I can link you if you'd like.

There's definitely a 'most effective combo' and I agree in certain champions like Karma or Sejuani, creative constraints is important, but sometimes some champions are too restrictive like Syndra IMO or Malz. People give Zoe all kinds of shit, but she's a good example of creative constraints (though a bit overtuned in numbers I admit). She has an effective combo (or 3) that you should use to be effective in the game, but you can also do some crazy things if creative enough with your combo.

My favorite is ulting and instead of qing, I bubble front line (I'm in bronze so it's usually a squishy overextending) and when I'm sent back my team follows up hard.

That being said, I'd love to see the video!

The only thing I like about his new kit is his ability to summon voidlings, which has let him be a fairly amusing jungle.

No joke. Prior to the rework, at the peak of the "lee sin meta", AD jungle malzahar could just about 100% win a 1v1 against lee at his red buff.

Jungle malzahar was a thing before the rework, it just got all of the attention after it because level 2 dragon cheese.

It was a thing afterwards as well. It died in pre season 7 when they removed AD malzahar.

deadlychuck1 votes

Actually removing AD malzahar would've technically buffed jungle malz, because of jungle champ's armor/mr distribution.

What really killed it was the voidling changes that make his voidlings completely useless. Which pretty much defeated the entire purpose of the rework, but I digress.

It's strange how you still saw Malz jungle video's with the reworked version then. I only saw him stop being played jungle when they removed the AD options for him.

deadlychuck1 votes

To clarify, I meant the voidling changes that were done along side the change that converted AD scaling to magic damage and removed AD malzahar.

Not the initial rework.

So the changes to make the voidlings 1 shot by large jungle monsters, have like 200 health at level 18, and reduced their movement speed by 51.

The AD -> AP conversion would've actually benefited malzahar's clear speed, if not for the durability changes.

So we have a nerf to a strong strategy, a meme, and that one public event where if you remember a guy who streamed himself smiting camps from his jungler, pushing waves and standing still while his teammates get ganked, and then falsely reports everyone on his teams for intentionally feeding got banned and when he then said he was punished for not playing meta everyone rushed to get outraged at the whiff of "meta enforcement", where this is now the second example in this thread.

I have sympathy if someone's friends don't want to play this with him anymore but these aren't Riot deliberately removing his "all the fun strats I used to play", you can still play Kog, you can still play "protect the kog" or even others and he was very strong at points this season on top of that while the other 2/3rds cannot even apply to him.

All i did was provide a couple of examples. However, thank you for perfectly providing an example of how the shifting community played a role in these removals.

Yes, dismissing strategies which aren't meta as OP and a meme is exactly the problem. Get the fuck off the game, or the development team, if you don't like the strategies that the communities develops with the tools at their disposal.

Same thing happened with me and my L4D friends. My Tekken Tag 2 friends also dwindled as time went on. Same thing happened with my Runescape pals.

Video games are pretty impermanent. Some people will move on. It's just a fact of life. Sadly RIOT isn't able to get much more new players and the direction the game is heading in is dangerous because of it. Hopefully it lasts for 5 more years at least.

InfinitexMortal4 votes

Same here. Ive always had a strong amount of friends online at all times. Now id be lucky to find 1 of them play one game before the quit again. Think im just going to throw in the towel too. Riot just pushes meta and acts like we are all going pro while taking all the charm out of the game. Used to be you could play anything and have fun, always having a chance to win. Now you have to pick the top meta picks that they chose to be better than all other champs and even then often still get stuck in not fun losses starting at 5 minutes. Damage is out of control and solo carrying is out the window with how obnoxious bounty gold is... Riot is killing off longtime players and they don't even care. [sg-soraka]

I remember when my whole friends list was always on. Friends from IRL and friends I made from Norms/Ranked. Everytime I logged on everyone was always on playing or just chilling with their client open. Me and my friends from school would always talk about playing all day and just wish class ended already so we could all hop on skype and play right away. Now my whole friends list is dead. Everyone's quit since season 5 and I still hop on once in a while to stay updated with the game and play a few matches. Back then I could play solo norms/ranked and still have fun but now I just feel scared and I end up leaving my client open, deciding whether I should play or not.
