Malzahar

Herr Eichhorst··4 votes·1,216 views

He needs a nerf or at the least a re-balance/re-work. He scales too well compared to other mid laners, gets free farm without mana cost, even when he loses lane he comes back and gets a positive KDA. Let's not forget that he hasn't been touched ever, so it's about time he gets SOMETHING. Anyone else agree?

I'm guessing you got beat by a Malzahar.

Not really, just feel that it's unfair in the current meta that he's been unchanged while everyone else is getting rebalnced.

he is pretty op but he is kind of in the same boat as kennan they are very strong but i doubt riot wants to nerf them cause even less people would play them

I don't necessarily want a nerf per se, just think a rework is in order. That would encourage more people to play (think of the surges in GP, MF etc.) Right now, he doesn't have much counterplay aside from building QSS (which, let's be honest here, no one wants to do that)

AtheosisX3 votes

No thanks. It's 50/50 shot the rework will blow, so I'd rather not take that chance. Many other champs need it more anyway. Also he doesn't have counterplay outside of QSS? WTF? Malz gets outmaneuvered by nearly every popular mid-laner in the game, and his ult self-roots making him extremely vulnerable to disruption from his target's teammates. He's one of those champs you don't go after 1v1 unless you know his ult is down, but lack of counterplay? That's ridiculous.

Marthian1 votes

Except there really shouldn't be a champion that should instantly win a 1v1 just because they pressed a button. I'm all for champions having advantages in 1v1 duels, but they shouldn't be able to just win by virtue of pressing R. Malzahar, Warwick, and a lesser extent Veigar all suffer this issue.

AtheosisX1 votes

Huh, that's funny seeing as plenty of other champs pretty much automatically win by virtue of pressing R, and most of them don't self-root while doing so. There's nothing wrong with having some champs have point and click cc ults as long as they have clear downsides like Malz's does. If we don't have some of that mobility becomes even more overbearing in this game. And it's not like Malz can 100-0 people with just his ult. He generally needs to land his combo to kill people, especially early. His Q is one of the hardest skillshots in the game to land for what it's worth.

Marthian1 votes

The self-root doesn't mean squat when there's no one else around to stop him.

I've seen several Malzahars blow all of his abilities quickly and ult you while Q is still closing. It's not hard to do his combo quickly.

Also I'm aware other champions have a similar ult, but many still have to work for it and have counterplay. Malzahar other than having an ally closeby or building QSS (which neither side likes), has no counterplay to his ult combo.

Good thing it's a team game then huh?

It's not hard to hit all the keys. On the other hand it's definitely not easy to land his full combo on a mobile target. Sorry if you are playing an immobile champ.

Also I'm aware other champions have a similar ult, but many still have to work for it and have counterplay. Malzahar other than having an ally closeby or building QSS (which neither side likes), has no counterplay to his ult combo.

So, aside from the counterplay it has, it doesn't have counterplay? Got it.

I'd also like to add that a completely immobile champ like Malzahar has one more form of counterplay, namely positioning. Outside of using flash or ambushing you due to lack of vision, Malzahar cannot engage you 1v1 if you do not want him to. That is counterplay. If you know where he is and know he has his ult available you have only yourself to blame if you die to him. Don't engage the lockdown duelist 1v1. It's pretty simple.

Marthian1 votes

Your jungler isn't always going to be nearby to stop him from doing that. And if they spend the whole time doing that, other lanes are just going to suffer from the jungler that isn't camping mid.

AtheosisX2 votes

And? Is it just the blue ball factor of playing an assassin who is used to abusing immobile mages and being unable to do so against Malzahar (I assume you are an assassin player since they are the only people who ever seem to have issues with him)? You will not beat Malzahar 1v1 in lane post-6 unless he messes up or you get ahead by a fair bit. Deal with it. Either roam to get your kills or get a gank from your jungle when he inevitably pushes the lane (because he tends to do that). He may be one of the best 1v1 champs in the game, but he's also arguably the easiest champ to gank in the game whenever he pushes.

Also he is very vulnerable to being poked down by long range mages fwiw.

Nilok1 votes

He is a mage duelist. By his design he should 1v1 you.

Malzahar never wins by just pressing R, he needs to get his full combo off unless he is really fed.

When you see both the hottub and the wall, he is trying to combo you. Either dodge the wall or use your mobility to escape or die.

Marthian1 votes

I've seen several Malzahars blow all of his abilities quickly and ult you while Q is still closing. It's not hard to do his combo quickly with little time to react to him.

And not sure what Riot thinks, but like I said, champions should not be able to just straight up win a 1v1 like how Malzahar does: No counterplay from the other champion if they don't have an ally or QSS (which neither side likes.)

Malzahar has pretty much gone unnoticed while other champs, who probably shouldn't have been, got nerfed instead. He is OP but with some lu- uhhh, some skill.. you can win. I think he would benefit greatly from a rebalance or PBE so yes, give Malz the spotlight for once!

I think a qss ap item would help a lot, as an adc i have no problem getting 3rd or 4th but mid laners usually cant build that alone. I also don't think he deserves or needs a rework he is a anti-tank mage with high burst and low mobility

Tworie4 votes

lol no

Malzahar is a single target immobile burst mage who can be easily countered by LaZhonyas/QSS and is defenseless when his combo is down

hes a lane bully and anti tank in a tank meta

Why do all malz nerf threads get downvoted? It's almost like everyone who plays malz frequents the boards. Malzahar hasn't been directly changed in a while. However, he has been indirectly nerfed or buffed by changes to items and even masteries. Liandry's change: buff, roa change: buff to ap, buff to mana (not that he needs it), nerf hp which lowers his effective hp when combined with zhonya's or abyssal compared to old RoA. Dragon buff and any changes to it affect him more than most other champions due to his Ad scaling passive and high ap scaling abilities. He'll be indirectly nerfed with the mr buffs that are coming out with the armor nerfs, but most mages will be hit by that. He suffered little during the great mana regen normalization due to his regen on E. In order for him to get free farm without mana cost his E needs to jump 6 times not factoring doran's ring(s). There are 6-7 minions per wave. Before he gets ap items or a rank 3 E he will need to auto each minion at least twice depending on how low it is when the E spreads to them. Once he finishes RoA, he should never run low on mana.

Malzahar is strong but he does have weaknesses. He has decent movement speed (340) but has 0 mobility and has to root himself to ult. His range is on the lower end (600-700). If he is outranged he can't do much without burning flash. His cooldowns are quite long and justifyibly so. His E is his only non-ultimate skill that gets a lower cooldown with levels. His one non-ultimate crowd control is only really useful against ability reliant champions until you buy rylai's and is supposedly difficult to hit. His W is practically useless for anything other than zoning and killing dragon without his ult or ally cc.

Why do all malz nerf threads get downvoted?

Because they're dumb? Malz is not overpowered. There's a reason no one plays him. I mean when did you last see him in a pro match? If he was overpowered you'd see him in LCS games. He's a good 1v1 champ if his ult is up. He's good at melting tanks. He's decent at team fighting, though not as good as many other mages. But he is countered by QSS, somewhat countered by mobility, and his ult leaves him extremely vulnerable every time he uses it. I get people thinking he needs a rework, but anyone saying he's overpowered is clueless.

The only thing that I think he needs a rework for is how annoying he is. Seriously, why are there champions that only exist to be a pain in the ass? I can understand one champion whose sole purpose is to be a royal pain in the dick, but league has far too many.

I know it requires some setup, but in a 1v1 situation, he can suppress you and you are forced for about 2--3 seconds to watch yourself die. It's one of the most excruciating things in this game to watch. I know, to get a full 100-0, he's got to put his DoT on you, put down his aoe, and a voidling would help your chances of a kill in just one ultimate, but when he does it, it is more frustrating than teemo shrooms. Yeah, you can complain about how he never really runs out of mana, but that's pretty much anyone with Athene's Unholy Grail and a doran's ring. But, the fact that one of his skills is so hated, so annoying, so cancerous, that they call it "Space AIDs?" I think this mechanic makes the game less enjoyable, imo, and there are way too many champions with mechanics that make the game less fun to play as it is.

I'm conflicted; on one hand, he's pretty balanced because he takes some skill to get his combos and picks in lane. But I also have the last paragraph that I ranted about his anti-fun mechanics, so it's a pretty hard sell, to get riot to nerf/rework him. If you could just point out that a champion is "anti-fun" and persuade riot to fix it, Yorick, Teemo, Malzahar, and several others would have been reworked a long time ago, and people probably wouldn't complain about them as much.
