Counters vs. Maokai top lane

I'm not anywhere near a great League of Legends player, generally spend most of my time in DOTA, so I'd love to know who counters/handles Maokai top. I've seen all sorts of guides say Shyvanna does but those were either a) Talking about counter jungling or b) Just said "you beat him 1v1 and clear lanes faster" and while the second part is true the former is not because he just out sustains you and your combo while dropping bombs on your head and snaring you when you run away (or letting you go and then healing quickly because he's maokai)

Frankly I'm at a loss. I've heard Lulu works but she's pretty expensive. I guess Nid could work because she has her heal and her spear spell harass could work outside of Maokai's passive range, and Jayce could just poke Maokai to death. I don't really own either but I would like to know what you guys have found works against the OP tree.

mao is a magic resist deficient champ and also can be burst down well early levels before he builds up his tankyness, so anyone with lots of magic damage or someone with lots of burst damage and punish him early on , also he relies heavy on his cc's someone with untargetability with there spells , fiora , garen , lulu , some long rangers that can deny him as he is mele despite having some long range and distance clearing of his own can cause him problems , theres a lot of choices that can annoy the shat out of mao early ... hope this helps , sorry im so late to this topic but these boards suck lol
