Honestly, the best advice I can give is to ask your jungler for help early. Nasus lanes tend to draw focus from both junglers (Wither is great for setting up ganks while Nasus is an easy target early-game).

One of the most important factors is wave-control. Whenever I play Nasus, I always try to freeze the wave just outside my tower since it makes it difficult for many opponents to harass me, can make me difficult to gank without a risky tower-dive, and leaves my enemy over-extended and exposed to ganks.

Against Nasus, you want to get the minion wave on your side of the lane and freeze it. Nasus has no mobility and his only ranged attack has a high mana-cost, so this can let you chunk him for every CS he goes for and deny him the opportunity to sustain. It also makes it easy for your jungler and/or mid-laner to gank him and harder for you to get ganks.

I generally recommend playing durable, high-damage champions against Nasus. While some squishy champions can make his life horrible early, he will generally murder them with 200 stacks and Sheen (roughly 10 minutes into the game). Nasus can't effectively itemize penetration without sacrificing durability, so champions who can stack armor and MR mitigate his damage greatly.

The following champions are quite good at dealing with Nasus (in my experience):

DrMundo This is my default counter-pick to Nasus. You quickly become unkillable and your mixed sustained damage will gradually eat through him. I typically manage to first-blood Nasus at level 2 without jungler intervention as Mundo and snowball off of that.

Darius Renekton Garen Olaf These champions can build Black Cleaver into defensive items (i.e. Deadman's Plate, Sunfire Cape) to trade with Nasus. They are strong early-game, have innate sustain and they can trade favourably with Nasus so long as they can control the minion wave. In addition, Wither doesn't effect them too badly.

Trundle While Wither can cut your damage output, Trundle's early-trade potential and sustain can let you build a lead against Nasus. Late-game, Trundle can crush Nasus in a 1v1 fight (so long as you have QSS for Wither) and his ultimate will make Nasus squishy during teamfights (while making Trundle unkillable). I'd probably recommend Blade of the Ruined King -> Sunfire Cape in this match-up. Also, Trundle can solo buff camps at level 1, so I'd recommend stealing the enemy red or blue buff and then teleport to lane after basing; you will have an experience advantage and the minion wave will be pushing towards your tower.

Malphite and Maokai have worked surprisingly well in my experience. They are capable of farming against Nasus easily, scale extremely well into the game and are capable of beating Nasus in fights when played appropriately. They get far too durable for Nasus to really hurt pretty quickly, letting you fight him regularly and easily set up ganks against him (or gank elsewhere when the opportunity arises).

Vladimir can be a painful match-up as Nasus. While you are both rather weak early-game, you both scale extremely well and Vlad has the range advantage. Vladimir is one of the few match-ups who can constantly harass Nasus under-tower and out-sustain him. Once Vladimir has Rylai's Crystal Scepter and Void Staff, it can be very difficult to deal with him (especially if he has Boots of Swiftness to kite you).

Champions in other lanes are quite capable of countering Nasus too.

Malzahar can kite and murder Nasus at pretty much every stage of the game if he has his ultimate. If he builds appropriately (i.e. Rod of Ages, Rylai's Crystal Scepter, Liandry's Torment, Void Staff), he can even wear Nasus down without it due to his high damage and durability.

MasterYi is capable of dueling Nasus whenever he has his ultimate available. Highlander makes Master Yi immune to attack speed and movement speed slows, which renders Wither (Nasus' main defensive tool) useless. Master Yi will typically be able to kill Nasus through raw DPS while Skirmisher's Sabre and Meditate can be used to reduce the damage Nasus deals to him.

Most supports are quite capable of peeling him off of their carries. This pretty much extends to the entire support class.

item 3047 are especially valuable against Nasus as most champion. In addition to providing armor, it reduces the damage of his Q and basic attacks by an unmitigateable 10%.

item 3116 and item 3022 and item 3025 are very useful to have on your team against Nasus since they can help your team kite him during teamfights, preventing him from reaching or sticking to targets.

how about jax

Akenero1 votes

Jax is only meh, since wither slows attack speed. The best bet vs nasus is this: punish him if he goes to farm, ranged champions are extremely good at this, as are very mobile champions. Fiora is a pretty good pick vs him, due to her riposte and extremely high damage.

Fiora is a good pick vs anyone. That champ is almost as much bullshit as Leblanc.

Captain Aishi1 votes

the two strongest champions I know about laning vs nasus are evelynn and katarina

evelynn can just cleanse wither whenever it'S cast on her and she can constantly harass from range with Q, making any kind of last hitting a nightmare for nasus

katarina is relatively similar in that you max W and constantly spam it on nasus, the speed boost from it making it impossible for him to retaliate, and if you ever get ganked or withered you can shunpo away and wait for it to fade before going back to harassing with W

Fiora is a fantastic pick vs nasus, as she can bully him in lane and if she's ahead enough delay his scaling for a very long time

Lol... Everyone beats Nasus early game. If you're losing to a Nasus early you're doing something wrong.

TheSequelsRBad4 votes

I honestly think Nasus has a better early game than most people give him credit for.

He can sustain through most trades, and at low elo top laners are bad at wave management, his biggest weakness early.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

He has a weak early game since he can't really fight opponents or contribute to skirmishes well compared to other champions.

However, his early game is fairly safe due to his sustain and anti-dive tools (i.e. Wither, Armor Reduction).

I generally just freeze the minion wave near my tower indefinitely. I may lose some CS, but my opponent generally can't kill me without tower diving.

Brain Errör 4041 votes

Tbh, most top laners who are not farm reliant, beat Nasus early game.

The OP asked who can beat him early game, meaning who can get an early advantage over him. Which should be just about near any meta top laner if you play them right. What people always seem to think is "who can kill him early" to which I will answer, a good Nasus isn't going to die early 1v1 to anyone.

His early game is bad; his sustain, on the other hand, is second to none. He's on par with people like Vlad and Swain when it comes to his early sustain.

As a Nasus main this season I have a lot of trouble with Darius.

Quinn can give some trouble early, as can teemo, but if he gets to a certain point, he can just run at them and kill them.

Gnar can be a problem as well, but most gnars in silver/gold (my elo) are pretty bad.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Against Quinn and Teemo, you basically have to turtle under your tower and take whenever CS you manage to get while stacking resistances.

That said, they are generally pretty easy to kill if you Wither them when your jungler comes.

AttackOnTeemos1 votes

Sounds weird but I rush anything that puts grevs wound on him. Keeps him from sucking back all that life steal he gets.

MunchCrunchLunch1 votes

hes really strong in 1v1s. even early game. if your melee. because of his sustain. W. and ult.

my best advice is to play a ranged top laner and buy item 3140 after your first item.

Zetto1 votes

That doesn't do anything to him. QSS doesn't work on debuffs anymore.

Catastrop1 votes

Wat? What are you talking, that's the entire purpose of QSS, cleansing debuffs.

Zetto1 votes

There's a difference between debuffs and CC. They changed QSS a while ago to only work on CC. IE, roots, stuns, snares.

Catastrop1 votes

I know that but I don't see why it wouldn't cleanse Wither, as it works on Malz ult, WW ult, LB's chains, Morg's ult and Urgot's ult, although the caveat is you get swapped regardless because it has no max range to break the effect.

Zetto1 votes

actually you know what im not sure if a slow counts as a CC effect. BRB.

Zetto1 votes

ok apparently you can QSS a slow. My bad. still not very smart to do however, as his slow is on like a 6 second CD with 40% cdr

Catastrop1 votes

Well, you really only need to use it once in a trade either way.

Catastrop1 votes

Darius You bully him terribly, which is what you want when you're against Nasus.

warpenguin5551 votes

Illaoi is awesome if you A) know how to play her and B) can freeze the wave properly. I did this to a Nasus, most of the game i was up 3 levels on him. And the best part is with Illaoi you are a natural gank repellent. Renekton works too but I like Illaoi so much more into the matchup. Oh and do not get lazy. DO NOT GET LAZY AGAINST NASUS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Once you have the wave properly frozen keep it that way. Do not decide to go back to laning as normal because he has no stacks. No. You keep pressuring and freezing until he is forced to leave lane to get stacks. This is why i like Illaoi the best into this matchup. while you are making Nasus regret his pick his jungler could come up to try to get him something. But Illaoi is Illaoi and wins every 2v1 unless you miss your E, but she still can win them easily.

TheSequelsRBad1 votes

As a player who mains both Illaoi and Nasus, I strongly disagree. Nasus can stack the tentacles, and as long as he plays safe, and doesn't let Illaoi engage on him (which is easy because he can wither her and walk away) he can end up with absurd amounts of stacks and can't 1v1 her in her ult once he gets some armor and stacks.

I got about 400 stacks at 15 -20 minutes as a nasus vs Illaoi. I regard Nasus as an Illaoi counter tbh.

xBushx1 votes

When I vs Nasus I go Cass, and SHIT on him. Hit your Q he can never catch you. Also when he Q procs he MUST face you. Giving you the easiest ult ever if you want to escape.

Honestly so easy as Cass. Also they BOTH want to farm and trust me you WILL be bigger than him until the 45 min mark. At that point hopefully the game has been won elsewhere.

Pretty much any top laner in this game can shit on him early. It's more about you learning wave management than picking a specific champ.

Pick Pantheon, and you cannot lose.

A better question would seriously be- Who doesn't beat Nasus early game? Nobody actually loses to him, but rather will not be able to keep him from farming. Thats typically tanks, who will be way more useful in the lategame anyway.

PermabannedGaren1 votes

Darius Start W, when he goes for his first minion AA>W and then auto him as much as you can. If you get Noxian Might and ignite if you took it often he will probably die.

TheHurricaneGamr1 votes

You could just play Gangplank and outscale him, as well as have a better laning phase.

Although I know this is a troll thread, I am having trouble how anyone could believe that Nasus beat literally anyone in lane.

Nasus has the worst laning phase in the game by a significant margin, this is by design and meant to counter-balance his potential ultra high late game scaling.

Nasus is more of a mid-game champion than a late-game champion.

During the late-game he will be kited to death during teamfights, murdered by the fully itemized carries and do little damage to them through their defensive item (since he can't really itemize percentage armor penetration).

That's a problem with the ultra high penetration this season which is intended to be fixed with the future changes to Nasus (240 armor/MR ult)
