After all this time, I'm moving on from League...

I played League for the longest time, made a new account even just to level up for fun, but I realized that as a casual player, League just doesn't work... there was something missing for casuals like myself. I started playing Blizzard's new MOBA Heroes of the Storm and I was instantly hooked, it just has that casual appeal for people like me; not too complicated, yet not too simple either, and still a ton of fun. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what Blizzard did better that Riot just didn't deliver on, but I feel like once Heroes is officially released, most casuals will probably play HOTS. It just has that casual appeal, while still being a lot of fun. I'm sure League will maintain its hardcore players, but I do believe in the saying that no king rules forever, and the vast majority of players are casuals, and I think most of them will inevitably jump the League ship to play HOTS. Every time I try to play League now, I just feel empty, as if my urge to play League is completely gone... and instead, I end up playing HOTS. See you all when Heroes of the Storm officially comes out, going to enjoy Beta for now. Good bye League, it's been a wild ride, but it's time to move on, gg.

Not really sure why I got downvoted for telling someone bye, but ok.

I remember when League used to be called DotA for dummies.

Looks like HotS is going to be the new 'LoL for dummies'.

At least League can run on toasters, the SC2 engine still struggles to run properly on machines of its time.

I have a toaster of a computer, and I can assure that Heroes runs just fine. I don't even have a graphics card, I'm using intel's built-in "Intel HD" graphics.

Sailor Mint3 votes

For some of us "just fine" is 60fps and no frame drops.

I have no issues in League of Legends. Heroes struggles to keep a stable 30fps, on a 6+ years old engine.

The downvotes from all the HotS fans though.

I just have to call bullshit on this. Heroes requires SO MUCH more power to run. I can run League on my computer at 60 fps easily while on HIGH settings. AND IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL.

Whereas when I play Heroes I have to play on minimal graphics for it to run at a consistent 30 fps. WHILE LOOKING LIKE SHIT. This really turned me off from the game.

Although there are many reasons I just don't like heroes. No last hitting? Well just stay in xp range and you get the same advantage as your opponent. No items? Yay I don't have to choose between surviving or killing. Whoo ho.... Health globes? Cool now even if I don't have any sustain I can stay in lane forever!....... Oh and you can spam spells without having any mana problems for at least 6 minutes.

Everything the HotS cuts out is what makes LoL fun, intense and exciting.

League of Legends gives me an adrenaline rush in every game. HotS makes me fall asleep.... zzzzzzz

One probably requires a better GPU while the other requires a better CPU. Either way sounds like your rig is trash. Given todays market to casuals my money would be on your GPU which is most certainly the fault of yourself.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the no items, the rest doesn't bother me at all though. If they decide to make one major competitive mode they could try to balance champions around items and restrict certain items from certain champions. Splitting casuals and tryhards who woulda thunk?

Drakzul1 votes

Intel HD 4000 graphics not good enough? or is my 2.4ghz I5 dual core to blame?

How and Why would they add items to ONE game mode? That doesn't even make sense.... Especially as a "ranked" mode....

Items don't make a game difficult or more casual without them. Items add options. If anything you can try crazy builds and fun stuff for FUN. HotS is just.... choose upgrades and ult. Most upgrades are boring anyway. It's just... boring. You don't feel any form of acknowledgement for doing anything good, you don't get stronger, your team gains a small minuscule advantage that is completely overshadowed if anyone on your team gets killed.

Anyway even for casuals the game is so blatantly bland that there is no way I can see people consistently spending 30 minute periods to play it.

Funnily enough if you asked me to guess which graphics card you had I would have said Intel HD 4000, anyone that knows computers well will know why I would have guessed that and they probably would have guessed the same. I hope this doubles for me answering that question in record time.

If they wanted to use items to balance a mode for competitive play while keeping the other modes somewhat open in regards to balance that'd be a way to do it. Items can balance champions in a way so they're built to be balanced and competitive like league without destroying the crazy diversity that everything being imbalanced brings.

Drakzul1 votes

Imbalance destroys diversity when people figure out what is best. Your in the newly wed phase. Wait until you get to living together AKA the meta develops.

You can have it 2 ways, Perfect Imbalance- The Dota method. Or Perfect balance- The LoL method.

HotS is a mix.... which is where LoL is trying to get away from. See all the qq threads about champions? See the stale diversity in pro games until this season? THAT is HotS future.... An imbalanced snoozefest.

Imbalance is fine as long as every champion has champions that can stomp them, as said perfect imbalance.

Drakzul1 votes

Like I said, perfect imbalance works just as well as perfect balance. The problem is HotS comes nowhere near either of the two. They have strictly op heroes and strictly terrible underpowered heroes.

HotS is already starting to acquire a meta, in that the community believes you are not a team player if you pick Murky and a bunch of other characters in ranked.

I've been playing heroes lately and this is completely true, there's no jungle route, no summoner to fulfill roles, everyone tends to build the same. It's completely based on seige. No other aspects are present. If it didn't have a blitz singed hybrid I wouldn't play it.

So what you're saying is there's more action, more wacky champions, and no meta you're forced to follow? Jesus this sounds like pre season 1 league, sign me up.

Let me be fair to heroes, the champion pool is quite good, heroes are unique and have a good feel about what they do. that aside, the game play itself is remarkably dull. Every map has its own mini game that each team needs to scramble for. Which will indirectly push the enemy base for you if you 'win'. That said, individual heroes feel extremely weak on their own. It's mostly clumsy team fights with everyone focusing the person out of position. Cc locking them to death. there's no counter building, as there is only one damage type. There is also no defenses, so hp scaling is how you determine how good a tank you are, in addition to hp regen. All in all, they took the thought out of moba.

I watched a stream for a bit, from what I could tell certain champions could have different roles like support healer or carry based on what abilities they pick, so the base stats 100% determining your role doesn't seem to be a thing as much as you're making it out to be, but again I was just spectating.

That said I miss the old 1 lane custom maps in SC and WC where every x amount of time it picked a random (or not so random) champion from each side to duel in an arena while others watched before putting them back in lane.

Heroes are absolutely stuck in their archetypes. The only damage scaling is level wise, and on certain heroes talents. So you can't opt to buy damage item on Tyrande to be a good dps/support (even more so now that they recently nerfed her few damaging talents) you will always be a support with ok damage, if yoru team lacked damage without you, no talent you can pick will change that. Uther will never be anything other than a heal bot that occasionally stun, same from Brightwing.

I actually like HotS just fine, but there are several issue with the game.

Thefriendlyorc1 votes

This was my largest issue with the game. I cant turn a caster mage into a tank, nor can I make a tank into a competent damage dealer in melee. They're almost TOO locked into their archetypes to allow any flexibility.

I agree with the OP. League has been out how long and they still haven't changed the cause of the toxicity and frustration people feel with this game. Namely, the stupid rank system. A system that makes people feel helpless and frustrated as 1 noob or afk can ruin the experience for everyone. I hope League goes down hard and fast. Good riddance to it and all its toxic players.

I can't wait, just waiting for release, can't afford to be buying it right now. League has fostered a stressful environment. The lack of modes and focus on competitive balance have really shown through.

With original dota etc. I think Riot forgets that there were other similar MOBA modes and maps people made that were at times more popular. The fact that Riot has put in next to 0 effort on that front to try to focus their entire player base down 1 lane so to speak means that everyone is on one track together, that track is a highly competitive mode that many take very seriously. Casual players just don't fit well because it's not what they want or thrive on, so they get that same competitive feeling that others around them have, but for them that environment is just stressful rather than welcoming.

For me the largest part that's driven me to the same point of the OP having not ye played HOTS and wanting to is that currently the balance in this game is non existent at sub lvl 30 (master players teamed with lvl 10s etc), in normals the balance is terrible, not as bad but really bad. In ranked you get the most balanced (sometimes off but mostly not too bad) environment. In essence ranked has become the best place for casual players so they don't get matched with people too much better/worse which fosters that toxic environment they hate. Most wont touch ranked anyways because they're not the ultra competitive type, and the ones that realize it's the most casual mode have that stress level of trying to perform for their team in a competitive way because it's ranked and you don't want to let them down.

Look at how popular bots are. Riot tried to cater to the masses, then tried to cater to the masses AND competitive play. Somewhere along the way that focus got blurred and this game top to bottom is focused highly on competitive pro level play. From negligence of new players and sub lvl 30 matchmaking, to negligence of normal matchmaker to champion balance. Riot just lost sight of what made them so popular BEFORE E-sports made them more so.

The truth is this game has become very stale because Riot is scared to change something that's already made them so much money. It's that fear of change that other new games that have to compete are trying to get right, and with the budget Activision has I think Blizzard is setting up to nail it. The fear of change left a giant hole in the market that other games are super excited about trying to fill cause they see how much money is in it.

@OP add me in game if you want I'll msg you my battle.net tag I'd love to play some HOTS with you when it gets released.

Game modes are another thing Riot missed. Riot wanted to "get normal 5v5 SR just right" but no one cares about "just right", people want modes and maps.

People have really simple needs, as demonstrated by League's rise to success before the whole rework-counterplay-anti-fun train got rolling. It had the old Sion and a bunch more craptastic champions and gameplay was often simplistic and straightforward, but no one cared.

HotS is made by Blizzard, more newbie friendly and has more maps, so it's better. Full stop. None of the polish and micromanaging Riot applied to finetune the experience is relevant in any way. None of HotS' boring kits, inability to balance slightly interesting ones and its pants on head retarded implementation of stealth (it makes the hero physically harder to spot on the screen, giving an advantage to people playing in a dark environment) are in any way a problem. No one cares about any of this.

Blizzard + accessible + more maps = better.

Honestly I think the balance is probably a HUGE part of it, making every champion fine tuned and balanced across all levels of play means you're making a stale environment. What works as well as everything being balanced is nothing being balanced, then you can create crazy fun off the wall stuff that people enjoy. It may not work well for their e-sports model, but that's on them for only having 1 well done game mode besides ARAM which was essentially fan created. Can't do off the wall fun balance in your e-sports mode, but since Riot has no other modes well... The fact is Riot has hit a point of no return on this and Blizzard will happily fill that gap.

Edit: I just thought about it, about how many champions I've learned and practiced and then they got rebalanced or reworked, or had their entire kit remade after I learned them, and how it kept happening to ALL my champions starting with Kayle remake when she wasn't even popular. I remember how upset I still get every time they do it. Now I think about my new friends that started recently and how they're having the same thing happen to all their champs, even the off pick and less popular champs and are complaining to me about it. This reminds me of a big reason why I just struggle to enjoy league.

Alice Null2 votes

Honestly, I don't play league competitively (mainly because I despise draft format and ranked toxicity) but I just can't get into HotS. I like the idea of blizzards characters duking it out, but it just seems very slow and dull for a majority of the time, not to mention the general floaty feeling I get from all of the animations and sounds. League is perfectly fun for me, and with the large champion pool its very hard for it to ever feel stagnant on my end of the spectrum.

"In a team game, I don't like to help the team" is an alternate way of phrasing that. Not saying that MOBAs should be communist (lol), but I don't think that's the best criticism of HotS that could be offered. Especially to a filthy casual like myself.

The first half of your post contains some interesting thoughts, but the second half of your post seems to suggest that you just make stuff up without any actual knowledge. WoW did not win "because it was the first and requires tons of time". WoW was FAR from the first. WoW was an upstart competitor to many more established MMOs, with EverQuest being the dominant player. At the time, everyone believed EQ2 would be THE next big MMO. And WoW didn't win because it requires tons of time, if anything the exact opposite is true (which actually supports your point). WoW required much less time than EQ and other MMOs, and was much easier for casual players to get into.

As for Hearthstone, you just look ignorant spouting that the outcome is largely based on luck and having better cards. There is certainly luck involved in any one match, but there is a reason players can consistently make legend.

It's about cards and skill not cards and luck. That's the reason I stopped playing it. I got tired of playing against idiots with more legendaries than I could count as they played like idiots with badly built decks to get a 50/50 win rate. I'd rather play against people with similarly valued decks/skill rather than highly valued decks+idiocy. As a card game player I enjoy that competitive element knowing it's a battle of wits. In hearthstone against idiots with thousands of dollars into their decks it's not a battle of wits, I feel like I'm playing against idiots with handicaps as I watch them misplay their way to their 50% chance to win. For them though 50% chance to win is more than they usually get which is probably why so many play it.
