Just wanted to bring light to what could be an unjust punishment
Hey there folks, Casual, but long-time player here, I don't use the forums much, so please forgive me if this is out of place, I feel this is the best spot to post this. It was recommended to me by Riot staff to post the following after my initial concerns were voiced in a support ticket exchange:
I like to consider myself "well-behaved" player. I don't get reported, I don't get angry or emotional over video games. However, my computer/internet connection can be rather finicky at times, and I want to address a problem that I (as well as many others) have regarding the current state of the "leaver" punishment.
Yes I understand that this punishment is made to discourage people from intentionally disconnecting mid-game, and I completely agree that it is %100 necessary to punish those players, it truly sucks when a quitter decides to abandon the game, be it on my team or the enemy team.
However, I was recently demoted, and reported x4 due to my internet connection giving out while we were winning a ranked match. Clearly I did not mean to leave a winning game, and clearly i was not intentionally trying to lose. Disconnections due to internet issues rarely happens, and in this case, was due to a power outage at the internet provider's facility.
Okay, I understand that there is no way to distinguish intentional leavers from unintentional leavers. But is there a way to implement a screening (similar to other report-based punishments) that allows innocent players to be rid of their reports/leaverbust punishment if the reports prompt staff to look at the in-game chat and scores and determines that there was no intention to leave?
I know that's a far shot, but there is another area that would be much easier to help:
Errors during the 3-minute grace period.
The last game I almost played was a loss. A loss due to my game never loading. Client seemed to be functioning fine, but froze during loading. I was unable to connect to the game in time to make the 3-minute grace period, and found myself unjustly punished a full game's worth of LP, and a good chance for more undeserved reports as well.
The 3-minute grace period is a great idea to help protect players from being left high and dry when a teammate fails to connect, BUT for the player that fails to connect, why does he/she get the same punishment as an intentional leaver? Especially when no team members are negatively affected by the one who was unable to connect?
I am just hoping that eventually we will see that for someone who fails to connect during the grace period, (due either to client/server side, internet, or personal pc complications) they are either issued a warning, so that they may have a chance to fix their problem before attempting a ranked game again, OR have the punishment reduced to that of "queue-dodging" because let's face it, while having a team mate miss the 3-minute window is annoying, nobody suffered an unjust loss, and very little time was taken up by the mishap. It will allow the player to fix whatever is causing the issue, and come back to gaming. The player is less likely to enter his next game "tilted", and eliminates the possibility of unjust punishment during unintentional "loading screen" leaving, which MANY of us have had before.
I HIGHLY doubt that players intentionally disconnect during the loading screen, because they could just as easily have "queue-dodged" before loading and lost less points. That is why I believe "full-game" leaver punishment, for a 3-minute grace period disconnect, is severely unwarranted, perhaps antiquated, and deserves another look. If a player continually disconnects during the grace-period, then of course, full-game punishments can be warranted.
Thanks for hearing me out! Please post thoughts, suggestions or ideas if you have any. Or tell me why I may be mistaken. I don't want to come off as a complaining whiner. As the title says, I simply wanted to bring light to a troublesome aspect of the game imo. Thanks again!
