A 2009 Player's Plea to Riot Games.

Palantair·2/25/2016, 4:07:12 PM·391 votes·13,595 views

This is a long one, I've made a TL;DR for you and each section has all the important bits so you can skim most of the other stuff if you are so inclined.

To start this long post with my resume, I have been a _long time_ player in League of Legends. I'd go so far as to say I am pretty good at the game having played since 2009 being Gold level and higher upon the introduction of Seasons. I've also been around the block.
  1. I've experienced the Nasus 1.0 ap ulti shenanigans.
  2. Jax dodging tower shots, Dodge being a rune, Sivir's dodge passive, Dodge boots ect.
  3. Release Xin Zhao 1v5'ing teams.
  4. Ryze having the one shot combo with his ultimate AoE AP steroid from the halls of Odin's lightning storage house himself.
  5. Release Zyra (shiver).
  6. Old Kat with +gold on kill passive and only 3 skills with about double her current damage on resets.
  7. The S2 holy trinity of corki ezreal graves with Irelia destroying any top laner that even looked her way with just a health regen pendant.
  8. The unending Kayle model and passive changes (I think their have been about 2 model changes and 5 different passives?)

I've seen it all. I took a break for about 2 months to try out other moba's and really just enjoy life as I have some time to myself again. Coming back just in that short time after the preseason has really got me stumped by the direction you, Riot, have taken the game. In all the time I've played I have never felt it so unplayable as it is now.

  1. Too much damage
  2. Too much snowball
  3. Huge vision disparity.
  4. Personal thoughts/gripes (Less objective oriented and more just how I feel)
  • #Too much damage at_ ALL_ stages of the game.

Simply put, there's way too many champs that simply have with way too much damage at all points of the game. It'd be one thing if these champions are purely there for their damage and nothing else, they had a ramp up time, they have hard commitments, don't do all their damage in under 1.5 seconds or even were gated by items. However I've discovered that many champs get to ignore most of these, or in some cases _all _ of these things and are just terrorizing this game.

The biggest offenders I see are:

  1. Graves
  2. Fiora
  3. XinZhao
  4. Udyr
  5. KogMaw
  6. Zed
  7. Talon
  8. Brand
  9. MasterYi 10.Quinn

Noticing a trend? All of these guys are doing so much damage at almost all stages of the game its pretty reminiscent of Pre season 1 league damage (IE the tibber drop or ryze combo at level 6). It makes me wonder, "Why should I ever play other champions when these guys are just doing so much all the time?"

######I'll help ya'll out and give you a couple freebee's that I've noticed just slip the radar continuously even though they are always single handedly winning their teams games. Fiddlesticks Nautilus Chogath Amumu

#* Snowballing is the worst it's ever been...

This is not even a question. Snowballing is so hilariously prevalent that I can't even understand why the changes that have caused it went through. Whichever team happened to get lucky in the first 10 minutes of the game by getting FB and/OR the first dragon/tower almost auto wins the game at any decent level. There is literally no room for come backs.

  1. You can't do a late game strategy that can turtle for the late game (lol what late game we be 30 minute end game now) because games are just finishing too quickly.

  2. Gold is so scarce that** if you are behind** you can't even complete your first core item before the opponent is well on his/her way to finishing their second item.

  3. Several "late game" champs now have stronger early games then staple early game bullies do now (Poor Renekton) who then later become mid game monstrosities ending games before 20 minutes (Master Yi).

To further extrapolate the more towers you push down the stronger your lane minions get... Why??? You already get the increased safety net because you can deep ward further more safely and put them in a tighter position WHILE being able to just shove lane then gank somewhere else FOR FREE. You get Uncontested Scuttles. You get free Rift Heralds when you push the top lane in correctly... Wait why is this a thing again? It's the single most obnoxious gamebreaking snowballing... **_thing_**... I have had the ~~dis~~pleasure of experiencing in this game during its entire existence. If the opponents don't react fast enough thats a free tower. If they refuse to act (lolthanksoloqueue) then that's 2 free towers and a dragon + free roaming ganks.

#** There is not enough Vision to protect yourself **by yourself.

I wouldn't be as upset about the above points if it weren't for the fact I can't even defend myself with vision on my own. Even though I'm getting 100>50%'d by [insert above champions mentioned earlier] every time I want to get a last hit, I could deal with that if I had a way to protect myself even a little bit from the enemy jungler. The sad part is I can't. It **requires** my jungler or support or another laner to help me IF he can even spare the time since they need to be creating pressure on the map everywhere else and getting his/her own farm ect.

##1. Wards are incredibly limited especially in the first 10 minutes of the game. Pinks are required if you need a safety net since you can't have 2 greens out ever anymore. Should you start to lose lane to your opponent he now has all the vision control in the world since he will freely kill your wards with his own pink and safety net green. ##2. The winning laner enables scuttles for his team and you simply can't challenge it by yourself. This goes into the whole snowballing thing. You can't challenge vision from behind because you will put yourself in a bad spot and likely die. I'm not saying everyone is going to experience this but in my games I've noticed that it is incredibly difficult to challenge vision from behind because it is like S2 all over again. You die if you get in their range. ##3. Heavy reliance on your jungler for vision I wouldn't mind this point if it weren't for the above sections** and **the fact that jungler is probably the most difficult to play correctly. I don't want to have to rely on my jungler for vision so heavily and I can almost garuntee he doesn't want to be responsible for ganking, counter ganking, vision, vision denial, jungling and counter jungling all at the same time. Supports help with vision too but leave your ADC too long / be by yourself too long and you're gonna have a bad time.

All this goes into the other 2 points. There's too much damage and there's too much snowballing to try to recover from.

#So, for the TL;DR

##Damage is too high across the board.

You can't just keep reworking champions and give them more and more damage to "make the champion more fun". There is a reason why people hated fighting against every popular S2 top laner back in the day because as soon as one of you hit level 2 first the other died almost instantly. Then you died again because they had phage(back when this item slowed you) after they b'd. So it boiled down to one of you literally sat under your tower never seeing a CS because once someone got ahead you couldn't get in range or else it was death. Now this is the story of every lane this Season.

**By continuing to give everyone "Tons of Damage" you are continuously powercreeping the game. ** I actually must say I'd be super happy if you brought back nerfmastersucktown for a bit and started nerfbatting everything in sight because this game in my opinion is hideously broken and half of it is just because damage is way too damn high for no cost

##Snowballing is out of control. Rift Guardian is too much power for how easy it is. It's literally Morde dragon all over again only it gets to go to every lane. Many *late* (hah) game champs skip the early game low power curve whilst early game champs still have no late game. Their early game does not justify their weak mid/late game. See above.

##Vision is just too scarce and team dependent. Whoever is ahead gets free vision and vision denial due to scuttles + tower kills and you cannot adequately attempt to protect yourself with vision should you fall behind due to the limited wards and pinks constantly cleared. See above 2 points.

#Closing statements and my personal less objective gripes and complaints (More wall of texting coming your way!)

I really love this game. I have been playing a long time and it just pains me to see the direction Riot have chosen to go. I have played many moba's including WC3's dota and other variations like AoS and Tides of blood. I will continue to play it league too. That said... I think I can say with a great deal of confidence that you need to pull the leash in a bit. You are making so many champions unhonest to play against that I feel obligated to play something equally as broken in order to stay relevant.

##I have never in my life felt so completely outclassed against someone based PURELY on the champion they picked and not because of the skill involved.

My last couple games I literally had to play league by not playing at all, as in stay under turret and "don't die" in the truest sense of the statement. IE: I pick a go to top mainstay Renekton, someone I'm more then comfortable with. They pick Fiora. At no point at any stage of the game was I able to effectively fight her without losing trades constantly just because she does so much more then Renekton can. I have to play 100% defensive, which is an instant loss with an early game bully like Renekton. Couldn't CS and when I get pushed under tower I get 2v1'd with a fiddle ult/flash bypassing all my 2 defensive wards like shaco.

To give you an idea how absurd this feels for me, I was maining GP before his rework and laned against people counterpicking me constantly with pantheon, when GP was garbage and Panth was a damn terror.

######Also a little tidbit for newer players that higher leveled jungler mains will tell you. If you lose your lane he WILL be helping someone else win theirs. Your job becomes "just try not to die". #Feelsgoodman

##I have been on the opposite side absolutely destroying the other team.

Recently I did it with Graves and I couldn't help but feel the victory was hollow. It didn't feel fair, I didn't feel like I outplayed them. I was just abusing a champion that has so much free damage that there was not a thing he/she could do about it. I mean how fucking hard is it to auto>Q>R> someone and kill them in 1 second? Only thing the opponent can hope for is you miss which is really difficult to do with hitboxes the size of Sion.

##Champion kits are just doing too much

When I have to sit down and take a FULL minute just to read and then another 10-15 minutes of re reading to understand everything that just _one_ spell of Illaoi's actually does, theres a fucking problem.

##Stop making champs fit into every lineup by reworking them

I firmly believe you can't keep trying to make it where every champion is able to seamlessly fill into any and every team perfectly. Its not how it works. There are too many different champions to just make every team a cookie cutter. And yet that's what has happened as many champions play almost exactly the same doing the exact same job only either better or worse (Hi Akali, meet Diana. Akali2.0) This game is constantly touted as a team game, and yet there is no way to effectively compose a team correctly in champion select, IE late game oriented, push oriented, early objectives, mid game power spike oriented, turtle oriented, hard initation, wombo combo, teamfight, splitpush ect ect. (though the new champ select one is a great start).

#*To close, I just want to show you how absurd this games balance is with this statement:

You can't let a melee champion build straight tank items and still outdamage everyone in the game because "luloutplayedbro".

With just that one sentence how many champions did you think of that fit that description?

...A lot right? That is what I want to drive home. Why is damage so freely handed out that you can RELIABLY build full tank and still pump out hard carry levels of damage when leagues premise has always been about who is the better player and not who has the more broken champion. Thats for you to ponder and Riot to figure out.

FalconPawwwwnch2/25/2016, 5:23:40 PM55 votes

Pretty much

Damage has never been higher than it is atm

In season 2 if you were a normal melee champion you could survive teamfights for a decent amount of time building standard items like phage/wit's end/wriggles etc

Now you need to be a full melee tank with multiple steroids to survive adcs and assassins

It's absurd really

Biggest problem is that ADCS are wayyyyy too strong before late game so everything just dies all game, and it's been on this path for years; in season 2 ADCs were actually WEAK early game so other classes could shine, now ADCs are bullying other classes out of solo lanes

See this monstrous thread from 2013 about how broken ADCs were (and still are)

http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=3551106

Also because of this Riot gives tanks INSANE base damage to compensate

Sluiceway2/25/2016, 4:28:08 PM45 votes

I find it funny that the guiding idea behind the season 6 changes is to speed up the game and make it more exciting, and this has been a general failure.

shyv2/25/2016, 8:10:53 PM23 votes

couldn't agree more. only been playing for about 4 years but i've still been through some shit. despite all the broken annoying shit in previous seasons i hate this one the most.

a lot of champs right now are starting to feel like pre-rework kass. doesn't matter if you're actually a skilled player or not. you pick kass, you win the game.

but honestly, balance isn't even my biggest problem with the game right now. i'm used to things not being completely balanced. it may be a little more imbalanced than usual, but that's what we have bans for.

i hate the snowball meta. i hate how riot doesn't care about support at all. i hate the way the game ends after one team makes the first mistake.

so many times we've lost a teamfight at 20 minutes and went, alright, let's not do that again, only to see that the enemy team is actually able to end. nobody ever expects it. death timers are so long and towers are made of wet paper towel, games are too short and no fun.

with vision fucked up, it's always the support's fault when the map is too dark. i can only have 3 wards on the map at a time. that's my entire sightstone. i actually really enjoyed support in season 5 and i started maining it because it was fun. but now that vision is fucked up riot has just made my (already undesirable) job even harder and i hate it

i don't want to play my favourite role anymore. i don't even want to play the game anymore. i can't pinpoint what it is that i hate so much it's just not fun anymore.

maybe i'll start maining udyr and never lose lol

Theorex2/25/2016, 8:14:25 PM12 votes

Lets not forget to mention this comment here and now; quiet a few people believe that Riot is only adjusting the game according to how the top 3% of players play. I am very neutral to this thought.

But I will completely agree with pretty much everything; adding in the fact that because AD is so much stronger than AP at this moment in items, it is ridiculous.

I personally think that if you are a mid main and you don't play an assassin, you are sore out of luck and should wait until the Mid Year Mage Update. Because we aren't going to get any love or get any justice until then (If we even get any justice).

BluePolarizer2/25/2016, 6:51:44 PM12 votes

A major problem is the new masteries.

Fervor of Battle does as much damage as a free BORK late game. That is 3000+ gold of value for no slot inefficiency. If you convert it to AD, you're getting ~100 AD which is worth 3200 gold and 3 slots.

Thunderlord's is a gigantic nuke that you get for free along with free hybrid pen. Everyone has more flat arpen and mpen, making early game super snowbally.

Strength of Ages gives junglers who were previously kept in check by their low base HP, free HP. now they can freely build either resists or damage for a gigantic midgame power spike where you're both extremely tanky and have damage from items or simply as tanky as previously late game tanks.

Grasp of the Undying transformed previously mediocre laners into pure terrors due to the immense free sustain that they got, whereas previously they were kept in check by lack of sustain without mana/high CD (such as GP)

Windspeaker's Blessing turned all AOE heals into free Bulwarks. Note that Bulwark was so OP that it was REMOVED from the game in season 3.

DEmperor952/25/2016, 10:31:04 PM11 votes

The main thing I 100% agree on is the lack of vision. Especially personal vision. Being a midlaner and having very little choices to protect myself in lane, and later on not being able to have an impact on vision due to no available warding choices and barely useful trinkets feels so frustrating. 80% of the map being dark the whole time is just too much, especially when there's nothing you can do about it.

yoniame2/25/2016, 6:59:38 PM9 votes

turrets need more damage too. And hp, or regeneration.

SilenceToJiji2/25/2016, 9:22:57 PM9 votes

You know whats really funny??

ALMOST ALL OF THOSE CHAMPIONS HAD REWORKS

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Too bad Riot is stubborn and won't admit they should revert all these changes.

When the hell for that matter was graves not considered a solid pick before rework

Masterkerfuffle2/25/2016, 4:35:47 PM9 votes

cheers

This needs to get spread around. Riot should really see this.

1 800 MID LANE2/27/2016, 2:31:46 AM8 votes

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I'd rather the game be a wet noodle fight with turrets OP as fuck than the way it is now. So, I'd rather it be the exact opposite of what it is now. That 4th dragon buff is fine and all, but why take 20% less damage from turrets when they already tickle? It'd make more sense to have that buff and have turrets hit the way the do currently without it and have them hit like a truck without the buff.

I love this game, and I'll be honest, I'm not going to quit due to imbalance. Hell, it's not even that imbalanced. Every champion is busted save for a select few. There are a minimal amount of champions that aren't ban-worthy, and that's good, but the problem is that they're ban-worthy for their damage or overloaded kit rather than what Riot intended bans to be for. (Does this champion counter our comp?)

With that said, overloaded kits are probably always going to be an issue at this point. Riot needs to start nerfing numbers across the board and bring champions down in damage rather than bring weaker champions up. I really do think that weaker champions/stronger objectives would be beneficial to this game. ADCs doing an assassin's job shouldn't be a thing. Assassins doing a tank shredder's job shouldn't be a thing. Those are the two biggest issues right now.

Hell, I don't even know if this game should be classified as too forgiving or too unforgiving. It's too forgiving with turret dives being so easily accomplished by squishies and it's too unforgiving when you die once and your lane is practically lost. Mages are a joke unless you're Lux, and AD is broken unless you're Yorick. (Kappa)

Bouncemaster Zac2/25/2016, 6:23:44 PM7 votes

I agree with this wholeheartedly. It's a shame Riot won't respond to any of your complaints despite how clear and concise you've been about what you feel is wrong. Everyone says "don't just say 'i don't like the game now' , explain why so Riot can work on it" but when you do explain why, a single Rioter may show up and wave their hand at your concerns and say "we know what we're doing" without addressing anything you have to say.

I think the fact that ADC's no longer need a last whisper to destroy 300 armor tanks is a good indicator that damage is to high.

Remember when they were like "last whisper is so OP"? Now you don't even need it to achieve the same damage. Ain't shit anyone can do except malphite and rammus because they have massive built in armor steroids and in the end they still die as well.

The season's before if you took 2 people who were raw AD threats you lost the game because you messed up with your damage profile. This season 2-3 AD threats is cake.

Vistha Kai2/25/2016, 7:04:28 PM6 votes

It's just as the other guy said.

If you aren't the one snowballing, you become a spectator without the ability to influence the outcome of the game in any way or form.

Masterkerfuffle2/26/2016, 3:55:17 AM6 votes

I'll bet a year from now people will be talking about "The Snowball Meta" and how horrible it was.

Chespin20132/25/2016, 10:24:06 PM5 votes

Can agree with all this its because of these changes that made me quit and uninstalled. I barely even watch prolol because its so damn boring and was even planning on ranking up this season but now it seems a way of testing up my own individual skill is too much to ask now from Riot Lyte. I'm just been playing Dota 2 and I cannot believe how much more fun it is than LOL right now and have been watching the shanghai major has been pretty good. Apparently also that people who I known that intentionally lose the game are still unbanned but if you say anything naughty to them you get banned faster then they ever will. That's some next level priority right there "we care more about what people say too you online rather than the people who intentionally lose games because people still don't know how to press the mute button"-Riot Games. Also sick and tired of the favoritism towards certain champs like Ahri Fiora Kalista Leblanc LeeSin Lux Riven Nidalee Yasuo Zed meanwhile they leave unpopular champs to rot Skarner Yorick Warwick Tryndamere Swain Teemo Ryze Mordekaiser Mordekaiser Mordekaiser Mordekaiser Hecarim Evelynn Cassiopeia Azir Akali Aatrox.

GoodHotFreshFly2/26/2016, 1:21:11 AM5 votes

I want to say "I couldn't agree more", but I feel like that's too much of a common statement. I don't know what else I could say, but if I were to say something, it would be something very similar. :)

I quit this game a long time ago. It just caused too much anger and frustration for me when I played it, which not only do I blame these reasons for, but I also blame myself for not controlling myself well (sorry, I'm a human being). And, I had enough with this anger and frustration, so I quit. However, I do check up on the game from time to time a lot hoping to see something that will push this game in the opposite direction.

RIOT just does NOT listen to the community. It seems (not saying it IS) as if they've become selfish, only wanting to make money instead of pleasing a community. Something interesting I've noticed is that there are only RIOTer comments on posts that condone the game, make jokes out of it, and NEVER on threads like this, even if these threads are at the top of the boards home page.

This game is an utter mess, guised under the facade of high-quality aesthetic, a history of "success", and a dominant e-sports scene. Instead of focusing on fixing the elephant, more like a colossal whale now, in the room, they only want to create shiny new content. You'd think this would drive people away, as this elephant has been around for how many years? But we are lured back by the shiny new content, which is completely understandable. But, you know, we'd be fine (well at least, I'd be fine) if you stopped creating new content for a while and focused on fixing things.

Sometimes I fantasize about the community boycotting this game, but I think that's a rather dramatic approach, and it's unlikely that would ever happen. I just wish for something, anything, to happen that will get RIOT's attention so that they'll clean up the mess they made. No, I just wish for Riot to clean up this mess, period. Hope is a powerful thing...

Thank you for putting into words what I've been feeling the past while. I don't have fun in LoL anymore. Ranked I'm 8 wins 20 loses. Doesn't feel like it matters if I do well in my lane. If one of those tanky-but-do-damage champs gets a kill.. they snowball the hell out of the game. I HATE THE SNOWBALL META.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the "too much damage everywhere". Facing someone going pure tank items that is able to destroy everyone in teamfights is not fun.

[the jungler is] responsible for ganking, counter ganking, vision, vision denial, jungling and counter jungling all at the same time.

That's awesome... as a jungle main, that's just the perfect way to describe how much a jungler must think about at every moment in the game. There are so many decisions, but you can only make one.

Although, that list is short, you forgot to put in objective control, holding lanes, split pushing, etc... Next time a top laner gets angry because I haven't ganked his/her lane... probably just going to list all of the things I've got to do, and then list the things he's got to do...

Top lane: farm, don't die, ward river

Mid lane is certainly more complex, and bot lane has a lot of influence on the dragon control. Everyone certainly has their part, but it's just annoying being harassed every single game for being a bad jungler, when if paired with a team that knows how ganking works, and just leaves me to do my thing, I'll usually end up carrying... :/

(Been in the jungle for 5 years, so every time I hear someone try to tell me I don't know how to jungle... I just cringe... and it's probably coming from someone who's barely touched the jungle).

What I'm about to say is coming from a person who has climbed from bronze to high platinum and have played since the preseason of season 2. I've been waiting for someone to bring this up. I personally haven't because I'm lazy. However, I would like to add that Riot's responses to the critiques that some things are broken is to break other things. Essentially their belief seems to be, at least to me as a player, that the game has so many champions that are unfair/broken making the game fair/not broken. The problem with this logic is, if you play a champion that is not broken at all you instantly lose the game.

When was the last time you've seen a vlad or ziggs? I honestly have to say it's been months. This game has turned into playing champions that are the flavor of the months. I.E the champions that are the most buffed at this given time. It makes the game extremely boring. I can't play my favorite champions outside of the month they're good. Ziggs is a prime example, I love playing him but 8/10 times I'll get destroyed by the enemy midlaner playing a flavor of the month champion. It's gotten ridiculous.

Sir Ticklesword2/27/2016, 6:48:35 AM4 votes

So done with this season. All valid points made by the OP. You need to be on your toes the entire early game. There is no safe farming when the waves are always pushed up on a tower. Why does this minion pushing mechanic exist? It doesn't seem to benefit anyone. The ones in the lead have to stay with their wave if they want to farm effectively, leaving them open to ganks. The ones behind can't farm because their wave disappears so quickly, and they can't clear the enemy wave because they're behind on items. It's not fun, it's not effective, and it didn't solve anything except ensure you keep the lead.

Towers are a joke. I'm not those people that want them to do more damage than they should, but they shouldn't be the same consistency as tissue paper. Make them sturdier or increase the range or something. When the first tower goes down, the rest of the game spirals out of control. Doesn't help that gaining towers also contributes to minion pushing, which means the problems stated before just happen faster.

There is little room for comebacks, and they aren't satisfying at all. All it does is trade frustration. I want to play a game and be able to honestly say "gg." I don't want these empty victories, torturous losses, or increased toxicity I've been seeing. This needs to stop, Riot. This minion and tower thing didn't fix or solve anything except how to piss off a community.

This is an excellent post. I have been playing league consistently for 5 years and this has primarily been my game. Since season 6 has started, my playing has dropped by over 50% (from 20-30 hours a week) to a max of 10 hours (and get frustrated even more every game I play). There are sooooo many things wrong with the current style, they simply need to call season 6 to date a failure, and revert back to 5.

I have stopped buying RP points in fear RIOT will continue this trend and League of Legends will die :(

I have never been apart or seen so many games end before the other team can even surrender. If I wanted to play a 10-15 minute game, I would just do an aram.....which rito will probably get rid of like dominion one day......RIP

yes, sth. i´ve written myself at least three times in different wording since preseason hit...but Riot seems to be contend with modelling their once beautifull strategy-action hybrid into a mindless action-brawler so far. hopefully enough people will stop buying RP till this season ends to make them change their ways, but words really donßt reach them at all.
