Soraka Base Health Regen Lowest in Game?

So, I decided to see how the items scaling off of base health regen now would effect Soraka Soraka.

Since she was one of the first champions I played when I started a few years back, she immediately came to mind when LoL was turned on it's head in 4.20. Making it almost like a new game for me again. I proceed to check her base health regen only to find that her regen is: summoner 7 3.5 per 5 seconds

Ok... adding 50% on to that doesn't seem to do much good... I wonder how her health per 5 stacks versus other support champions: ** Thresh Thresh: 6 Janna Janna: 4.5 Karma Karma: 4.7 Kayle Kayle: 7 Lulu Lulu: 5 Lux Lux: 4.5 **

Wait... why does the champion that literally donates her health to her ally have the lowest health regen out of all supports? Maybe because her starcall heals her when you have a point or more in astral blessing? So, by that logic other champions who have spells or effects that heal them should get lower base health regen as well, correct? Let's test it out: Zac Zac: 7 DrMundo Mundo: 6.5 Vladimir Vladmir: 6 Aatrox Aatrox: 5.75 Sona Sona: 4.5

This is starting to make less and less sense to me... In fact, I looked through every champion profile I could trying to find another champ whose base health regen is within 1 per 5 of Soraka and I found zip, zilch, nada, zap. Every other champion besides her has a base health regen of 4.5 per 5 seconds or higher besides her.

Why is she the only one? Could someone explain to me the mechanics behind this?

  • Side note: the only thing that could offset this would be that she gains +.7 per 5 health regen per level. But other champs with higher base health regen get this too. So, doesn't seem enough to catch her up to other champs. Maybe stack hp5 runes? But these don't count towards your base health regen which is used by items, am I right?

Basic explanation: Riot doesn't want her to be able to itemize for extreme sustain. They want Soraka to have a lot of burst healing potential and to be able to save lives amazingly well, but they don't want her just becoming a sustain god by itemizing for health regen and using the huge base values on the heal. They want her sustain to be gated by her ability to land Q.

The reason for why they don't want her to be a sustain machine is because that has historically been a shitty thing to play against. It can make certain siege comps completely impossible to play as or against, and it gives a huge advantage to a team's objective control. These are things that Soraka doesn't necessarily need. Having low health regen means that she'll have to hit enemies in order to sustain, but she'll still have as much burst healing potential in a skirmish or teamfight.

This doesn't apply to other champions because none of them have anywhere near the team sustain power that Soraka theoretically could if she could minimize the cost of the heal.

This doesn't change the fact that it's REALLY hard for Soraka to sustain in the lane. As it stands, Soraka is not only mana gated, but also health gated as well. This leads to being able to bully her out of the lane really easily (MissFortune, the nightmare of Goat People). On top of that, they gutted her E's cooldown time and lowered her attack damage, making her close range zoning very poor. One of the things that should be keeping the tanky supports from just all-inning carries at low levels is the fact that supports do a considerable amount of AA damage at level one. Since Soraka just doesn't have the harass anymore, guess what's going to happen? She's going to play incredibly passively, and just heal her carry until she can land her Q, and once she's LOM, she'll spam heal and then B. That's the problem that you were addressing correct?

Ad Astra per Asp4 votes

Her heal mechanic is gated by her health regen and how much she can land Q. They don't want her to be passive in lane and teamfights only healing people as they consider that toxic.

They will likely do a pass on health regen runes and I've been using them on her quite some time for the above reasons. I can get off 2-3 more heals in a given period and way more in the laning phase to the point it's impossible to do anything but all in her lane to win against it verse any matchup. Which is imo ok if you're gonna be the premiere healer I guarantee you someone at Riot is at the edge of their seat just wanting to rip her a new one tho b/c that's how they are they hate fun or interesting things and wish to make the game boring and dictated by the voices of upper tier players and how those upper tier players feel the game SHOULD work, which in turn makes the game favor them and their ideas and their playstyle more which in turn creates a game they stay the best players in. Riot logic.

They will probably redo regen on runes and masteries and I'm suprised they didn't already because right now regen runes are already grossly overpowered for early game against everyone but all in champions. Since most laning is revolving around trades and doing better trades and the regen runes are overtuned b/c no one takes them or values them b/c they are useless past laning phase, their ealry game is overpowering. Especially on Soraka. It's a big factor in how I got plat. You're welcome. Plus regen per level quints make soraka relevant even late.

Also the yellow starting support item you get hp per creep killed in lane so it bypasses the base hp regen too. I'm sure some Riot person will think this is "unhealthy" for the game and try to kill it like all other things (AD katarina and Tank Katarina for example seriously screw riot).

Ok. I guess they are trying to make her more active champion as a healer type... The toxicity part makes a lot of sense. But then her super long CD on her silence and no cc to speak of (getting a q directly on the dot on a champion for a slow just doesn't happen if you play against anyone paying attention) make it so that all the enemy adc and support need to do is commit to attacks. They will win the exchange every time if they engage longer than 3 seconds...

Still, at least this part of her makes more sense to me now. And thank you for the advice on playing her as well as responding to my side note! <--- now more informed

She has 2 spammy self heals and uses her health to mega heal her allies, it's why her health regen is really low

Aren't Riven and Rengar the lowest health regen?

Benign Demon12 votes

She can only heal herself by landing a q on a champion.

But I do stand corrected when it comes to Riven (Rengar has more health regen than Soraka by a tiny amount). Riven has a whopping 2.5 per 5 health regen... gotta use that shield I guess

Low base stats means they want them to be harder and less safer to play as

You effectively heal more than anyone else if played well

I know her Q's kind of a low cooldown, but the other skill that heals herself is one of the longer cooldown ultimates in the game.

True, but even with 40% CDR, the lowest her ult's cooldown gets is 78 seconds, which I'd hardly call 'Spammy'. And even then, that's late game, rank 3 ult.

Well, Lolwikia said that the HP regen for Rengar and Riven were

Riven- 3.3 Rengar-4.3

Poldy Scarecrow3 votes

She should have among the highest imo.. It's not like a buff to her health regen will allow her to spam heal on allies anyways so it shouldn't be a problem.

After all she has to cope with her self inflicted damage, enemy champion damage And minion/monster aggro. Considering she practically exists at just-above-death health levels in any fight much less with her team, I'd say normal or even above average health regen is only fair.

Verin Oakenheel2 votes

Her health regen is low, true, but she doesn't need it. Her starcall is enough of a heal for herself, and if your adc, and later the rest of your team, is good at not taking free damage, you shouldn't ever been in serious danger of death.

That's my own thoughts on her, at least. I main support and jungle, and she's one of my go-to's.

Rengar's is 3.6 + .4 per level.

Riven 3.3 per 5

Based on her lore, it would make sense that she should have very high HP5. Not being very effective for her to build HP regen seems dumb. It didn't even seem all that useful to have tons of HP regen on her before 4.20 (except in ARAM where it was very powerful), and so I doubt it'd really be a problem now.

Did they change her lore? I don't see why she would. She was a fallen goddess

I do wish they would go and do a standardization pass on all the champions. Mages and assasins gets higher mana regen, tanks and bruisers get higher health regen.

cuz her heals are insane :P

MEMEME6701 votes

This is very simple.

You do NOT, in ANY circumstances, want raka to be able to reasonably afford enough health regen to be able to effectively negate the health cost of her W. Sure, she can't heal herself. But it's going to be impossible to take down anyone BUT her, and if she is regening 10% of her max hp in lets say a 10-15 second interval, you're just never poking her team ever.

Which means they have no incentive to do anything but poke you, which makes the game VERY BAD.

JustBoneBrook1 votes

well for sure it low she heal herself with spell... and it a really good heal (PASSIVE: Each enemy champion hit by Starcall.png Starcall heals Soraka, increased by 1% for every 1% of Soraka's missing health.)

Because soraka is a support, supports are usually seen getting support items, cooldown, mana and hp regen, actives that help allies etc, support items made for supports nearly all have some form of hp regen, soraka can either be built really magey like viegar and do lots of damage and healing sacrificing her survivability to do more healing, or get general self/other help items which sacrifice damage/healing for alternative buffs and self survival to try and give out more health from living longer.

Lwnt1 votes

I find the first route better for soraka compare to the second route. When I went to the second route I found that when I heal my ally the heal gets ignored and the ally still die from from burst assassin like akali.

Auryiel1 votes

Zac, Mundo, Vlad and Aatrox use health as a ressource. Zac, Vlad and Aatrox have to be within retaliation range to regen health. Are we really complaining about Sona again?

Gafugarion1 votes

This is why I run run HP 5 yellow/quints on her, armor red mgr blue, with the hp regen in utility and defense to pretty much sit in lane all day w/o ever going out of hp and keeping my adc topped off..

NorthernDruid1 votes

Damn, this is low.

This makes the health regen changes quite the nerf in Soraka's sustainability sans opponents

Like.. really, make her Q heal on minion/monster hits as well so I can do something when my lane opponents are dead or something. Don't make it heal full, but something like:

Monsters heal for 50%, any number of minions count as 1 monster. would make quite a difference in my ability to keep myself up when I don't have any opponents to hit.

Origami Kaiju1 votes

Monsters heal for 50%, any number of minions count as 1 monster.

While I love the idea of this, I think they would avoid it because it would promote Solo lane Soraka. When you take Soraka mid you use q to help farm. So you can imagine how her lane opponents would feel when she's getting heals just from farming.

I agree though, I hate that after you've just got a double kill in botlane, your only choice is to recall because you can't self sustain without nearby enemies.

Sorta valid I guess, though there are plenty of champions who sustain easily from farming just with their innate abilities.

And with each hit of any number of minions healing you for 50% of hitting a champion, then before you can really spam it (without running out of mana) even with max rank W you're looking at sub 100 heals.

Compare Irelia who sustains exceptionally while farming by the time she's got just a few ranks in her sustain ability (though admittedly she needs a bit of attack speed first, but she gets that easily).

Soraka only really heals herself well if she's hitting multiple champions, which she won't do in a solo lane.

plus if you're leveling your W first in a solo lane then your Q isn't gonna help much either in farm or skirmishes.

I think they could (and should) figure something out, because burning yourself out with no in-lane recovery (except waiting for your partner to farm hard) is a directly unfun part of playing Soraka

I found something, odd but it works:item 3713

You don't have to kill the mobs, just smite and run, works better than any pot. You could also smite red.

Or actually take the kill for extra gold.

It can also be used as waveclear when necessary.

Yes and is good. Soraka is yet more than capable in lane to regenerate health by correctly hitting starcall, and late game she can build enough health regen items to do her work,( even though heal ratio on starcall could be slightly increased late game since it's more difficult to hit starcall) The problem is that her E is too bad after laning phase they should rather reduce its cooldown and duration, so that after 1 sec you root the enemy, because, let's talk quite frankly, since you're squishy you are going to use E mostly to prevent enemies to use spells in advance rather than let someone dive you and then use it... but if you use this way they can just walk out of it since there is no slow while they are in E area and then you are out of CC, and if you wait for them to engage on you or your ADC by the time you can use E you or your ADC are already dead or almost dead

E CD 16/15714/13/12 E duration field 1 sec Enemy champions standing in the zone take magic damage, are slowed by 25% and are silenced until they leave

The main problem with building health regen on Soraka outside Talisman of Ascension, is that it also gives her health. And before the extreme nerf to health regen from items was usually only an effective increase on Spirit Visage because of it's 20% increase to all other health regen.

Getting the new Warmog's on her would be interesting though.

More than Warmog, I was looking more to the new item 3056 before, you couldn't get health regen and armor, so you could not boost his regen to allow her to heal more often without putting her in danger Instead a small amount of health(which doesn't make her vulnerable to items/abilities) that run against building health, Armor, health regen and the active to disable turrets are things that the new soraka can and will enjoy.
