Can When carry or am I just awful

First of all hi, I finished silver 2 last season and am looking to hopefully finish gold or higher this season. I think the main problem is I main Shen toplane ( I know he's getting reworked) but even when I play well I feel like I can't carry just do my best to lighten the load and pray my teammates don't die before I hit 6. So the question is would I be better off playing someone like riven or jax or even garden top like my to platinum friends say? P.S. I know I am bad , I just think I could do a little better for the team
