Add a ping test before ranked queue

Many players will agree with me that playing with a teammate who is reconnecting every 2 minutes is very frustrating and tilting. Not to mention that most likely you will loose that game since its a 4 vs 5, and the lagging teammate might have fed the enemy laner while disconnecting. So what do I suggest? Add a ping test before every ranked queue. If your ping is above a certain number, say, 140, you cannot go into queue. Another addition would be that if the person does not have a somewhat stable ping, they arent allowed to go into queue either. This is to ensure that people will not ruin other players' games by ranking with lag. This could improve ranking drastically.

I would also like to mention that I meant to make this suggestion in the LAN board, as my main is over there, but it seems that a "suggestions" or "gameplay" section is lacking over there, I would appreciate it if Riot could give the board a look.

Thanks for reading, I hope you have a lovely day.

I live in the Caribbean and before the server move I played on a constant 180 -190 ping (Got Diamond that year) and currently play on 110-120 ping. My point is that by putting the ping at a certain number which isn't something ludicrously high like 250+ then you'll be keeping certain players who are quite distant from the server effectively out of ranked.

140 ms? This will make a large portion of Bronze/Silver players never be able to play ranked.

who the hell votes no for a useful feature like this? this community is so damn weird.

Nvm I just saw that op actually wants to prevent ppl with a slightly higher than usual pings to not be able to play, I want my yes vote back.

Cowseed6/17/2017, 3:37:02 PM6 votes

Over 300, sure.

But over 140 is way to low.

Putting an arbitrary limit on latency isn't going to solve anything.

Not to mention higher latency does NOT equal disconnections.

Another thing is that you could be forbidding people from playing, because even Riot's direct provider fucked up. I've had that happen to me (50% packet loss every few seconds right before the server aka waaaay outside my or my ISP's influence) and they were trying their damnedest to shift the blame on me. A few months later half of the server had similar problems.

TL;DR Ping visible in the lobby? YES Anything else? NO

Maybe I should have changed the title to be "Add a mandatory ping test before ranked queue"

WolfBV6/17/2017, 7:02:03 AM4 votes

The way you want it now? No, I don't think people should be denied access to ranked queue just because their ping is above 140.

A Basic Island6/17/2017, 6:04:03 AM3 votes

i just think there should be a ping test somewhere in the client, so i don't gotta open up a god damned custom game or tutorial just to see my ping

AmoebaHewdraw6/17/2017, 1:56:51 PM3 votes

I don't think completely locking people out is the way to go. A warning popup with the amount of ping you have should be fine enough for me, explaining how a high ping doesn't just affect you, but the entire game itself. That way players used to higher pings can continue on, but those who think the ping is too high can opt out of playing.

Copy " ping 216.52.241.254 -t " into your command prompt and hit the enter key and it will tell you your ping in game without having to log onto a match. I use it all the time

This would be a grand addition! Although I'm sure there are outside ways to test this, I have never found one.

Faustavian6/17/2017, 6:01:11 PM2 votes

Not gonna lie, 23-40 MS is nice, and I love it. But I cannot count the times I've avoided ranked because of being in the middle of a match, and other people decide to start streaming videos and I've gone to a few thousand MS

*My Record MS was ~11300

Cavesloth6/17/2017, 11:46:19 PM1 votes

I think 140 is bit harsh, maybe in the 200 range, but this a great idea, we've all had a game that was an autoloss because 1 or sometimes even 2 people were in our ranked game with a shitty internet connection.

Funny how I posted this 3 days ago and got downvoted... -.- lol

300+ is better, the game is playable at 100 ping. Make it so if they can't go 30 seconds without going over 300 ping, they can't play ranked.

NAY Wrecksauce6/18/2017, 11:55:26 AM1 votes

Maybe riot will get the pros to give feedback on this. But then again they think 60 ping is lag....

OH THE HUMANITY!!!!!

TheFlameofOath6/19/2017, 12:18:16 AM1 votes

However, players may use background applications. So if this does become implemented they should tell the players to close any unnecessary programs before they run the test. But I do agree, this would be helpful! One game I had a top laner with a 1,000ms and he couldn't do anything.

TwitchInMyPants6/17/2017, 5:38:21 AM1 votes

I mean an option to see it in client is good, but setting up training takes less than a minute and I do that to doublecheck my performance of the computer anyway.

HAAHAAHAHAHAHA6/17/2017, 9:19:02 AM1 votes

teamspeak is pretty accurate if you want to see your ping?

Wráthful6/17/2017, 12:09:42 PM1 votes

ppl with big ping know that they have ping issues despite that they still manage to troll everyone with constant disconecting or just "lag" phrase all day long they must add checker for ping and if its too high to the point u cant stay connected = get kicked and thats it not fair 1 player to ruin your game.

Kento456/17/2017, 3:16:53 PM1 votes

Ok I guess me and my 20 friends from school that play league won't be able to play if this comes out.

Psyrix6/17/2017, 4:40:37 PM1 votes

140 is way too low, I generally have to play at 150-180. Additionally, sometimes ping is unpredictable and can randomly change. Something similar to a ping test could be done i guess... but it's prbly just as likely that Riot would recommend you play a custom game or use your pc's built in ping detector (as Kakarot says: Copy " ping 216.52.241.254 -t " into your command prompt and hit the enter key and it will tell you your ping in game without having to log onto a match. I use it all the time) to check it before they're able to successfully integrate it into the system

Clementine6/17/2017, 5:11:04 PM1 votes

You have many ways to test your ping yourself.

404 HP Not Found6/17/2017, 6:37:54 PM1 votes

There should be a system where it checks your area and if possible isp grabs the average users ping and runs a check so that if its above average it will tell you before you start and if you play a game and lose because of it(no clue how that'll happen) you get like a punishment idk like bit more lp lost or something to discourage the play of someone who knows they will lose but play regardless. idk how to eun a check on people who just naturally have high ping yet still play good

Newbie1287496/17/2017, 7:28:17 PM1 votes

What about people who occasionally get large ping spikes, forcing a dc for a good 2 minutes

Flawless Fetus6/17/2017, 9:14:09 PM1 votes

Eh. 140 is way to low. I think it'd be hard to find a fair number. Imo, barring people from queueing up is a bad idea. It'd be nice to display the ping to the individual so they know what they're dealing with beforehand, though. If you decide to queue up with unstable ping, chances are they'll get leaver bustered.

PaladinNO6/17/2017, 9:44:42 PM1 votes

As others have said, a limit of 140ms is way too low. If there limit was 220-250ms, then maybe (got ~60ms myself). And not only the ping, but preferably test for packet loss as well.

For those not familiar with packet loss, here's a practical example: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AuFMZD__7mN2gVKJfYTxOAn5KEOg (11.6 MB .mkv video file) And no, nothing can be done about it locally/clientside.

Personally, I miss the feature where ping was shown for all players during loading.

devdev4636/17/2017, 10:03:47 PM1 votes

If someone wants play with with whatever ping they have that's their prerogative... I agree having a way to test ping in client would be very nice, but I don't agree with limiting whether people can queue up for ranked based on their ping. People are already disincentivised by playing games while lagging because lagging sucks... We don't need this imo.
