Matchmaking question - newish player

I have been playing for roughly 2 months now. To my understanding, playing with seasoned players will put me in matchmaking with people at their "level." I notice when I do play with my son that I get my ass kicked, but I can hold my own (most of the time) when I play alone. My question is (after playing with him last night and getting creamed 3 games in a row, though everyone else did well for the most part): why does it seem like those higher skilled players are so much more powerful than me? I mean, I felt like I was doing 0 damage to them from the beginning while players from both sides were ripping faces off. I am level 30, I have runes and masteries. Am I missing something? Just curious.

Builds, knowledge, positioning, who to target how to counter your opponents. Everything is fluid. Mostly understanding yourself and your opponent make a huge difference, once you understand those you can counter build and play around their spell cooldowns.

Example: I'm sona and you attack, I heal as your skillshot comes at me adding a shield negating your damage AND healing myself. If you wait for me to heal and my shield to be down though I only get the heal benefit without the shield when you attack. A VERY basic example but these examples come across all champion matchups in almost every fight.

Also gold, getting CS and having more powerful items can give a HUGE edge.

Your last match you had 9k gold earned, all your opponents had 12-16k that's a HUGE gap. Also one of them built a lot of armor and HP, another a lot of HP but you didn't have last whisperer to properly engage the one with armor. Because he built HP and armor he was likely also intentionally making himself an easier target for you than the rest of his team.
