Rant from a friend who doesn't want to post under his own name plat+ since season 2

I've thought about making a rant on the state of solo queue for awhile now, but haven't gotten around to it till now (this won't be very organized because I'm too lazy to take time on a rant lol). I have 3 accounts in diamond+ and it's an absolute hellhole. I believe that there's more luck involved in diamond than there ever has been in the solo queue ladder for low-mid diamond. I have 1 account I reached D5 on in 34 games from plat 5, 1 took 215 games to reach D5(with D1 ish MMR), and the other I hit D1 mid LP in about 200 total games. I don't consider myself to be a "Great" player, but I think I play well enough.

  1. What I find it comes down to is that anything above D4 and under D1 is just a bunch of smurf/boosters. Smurfs and boosters everywhere in mid diamond. I've had many games in D3-D4 where the players have 75%-80% winrate on the champs that their account has never played, or they have no games played in normals and their winrate is through the roof. The lack of a real transition from low to high diamond is part of the major reason I think so many people stay in low diamond for so long.

  2. No recourse for getting a troll/AFK. The reason for the rant is because I have not had any fun in the last two weeks or so, because the games I've had are entirely decided by who has the ally that wants to troll/AFK. I am well aware that people are going to say "Oh but not everygame has one", but the issue is that FAR too many do. In my last 20 games, I have won 13, and lost 7. Of those 13 won, I faced 5 individuals who were either DCing or permanently left, and 4 that were blatantly trolling such as 3 zeal nunu support, 6 tears zyra support, 2 protobelts(working on a third) support lucian, and support jinx who would try to take his ADC's farm and then eventually sat in base. That makes 9 of my last 13 wins entirely free and I didn't even have to work for them. 70% of my recent wins were gimmes. Of my 7 losses, 6 were trolls, and 1 was a legitimate loss due to the auto feed...I mean autofill system. I got the same master tier Blitz main that raged at the ADC and jungle all game to then sit within the walls of our base until we lose twice. I got an AFK because he was filled. An auto-filled support that got raged at for building the wrong item so they ran it down mid. A Nasus top that died 1 time, ONCE, and then sat at T2 tower spam pinging the jungler till we lost. And a top Darius that died 19 times because he kept running into the enemy intentionally because he didn't like our jungler till we lost. The one loss that wasn't due to trolling we had 3 players that were jungle one tricks, who were on roles they had sub 40% winrates with and we lost in under 20 minutes while actually trying.

  3. MMR, brackets, and promos. Brackets are meaningless, but it's what people see. You can be B5 and have masters MMR if you dodge your promos everytime, and then if you won 1 and lost 1 forever you would never advance. As I've played 13 promos this season, I've kept track and found that promos are against you, you have overall worse allies than the enemy. On top of that you have to have a 75% winrate, while the cards are stacked against you (win 1 for promos, then win 2 of 3 to advance). Dodging a promo match that you're being trolled in results in a loss on your promos, so you might aswell try your best to win.

All in all I think that the current ranking system has become a toxic sludge fest in diamond. The games are almost always entirely one sided, and more often than not (in my experience) the games are decided by smurfs/boosters, trolls/afkers/inters, or DCs. Autofill screws you if you get two one trick ponies on your team, and so one just feeds and your chances of losing in mid-high diamond are very very high. I think if you get a little LP extra for playing out an autofill game it would incentive people to learn roles outside of their mains. Even with autofill I'm consistently getting 10-15 minute queue times, and with dodges and load times I'm spending 50% of my time waiting to play, only to have nearly 70% of my recent matches be instant wins or instant loses(Because I'm not LCS and don't hardcarry my team). This has been going on for a few weeks now, and it's getting insanely unfun.

I'm curious as to people's feedback. I'm sure plenty of people are going to argue that ranked is just fine, but there are less ranked players this season than last for the same time into the season by a large enough margin to show an issue. I think Riot is doing well on balances/reworks for champs, but horrid on the ranking system as the Elo system is flawed for a team based game.

autofill should never have been implemented, riot put the primary/secondary role in for good reason to take away reasons to troll.

In diamond I swear I get autofilled every 3-4 games.

try getting it every other game because someone dodges when you finally get your primary role

If someone dodges then restart the q

Yeah the smurfs have gotten pretty stupid.

Like I op.gg my match and the smurfs/boosters are so evident, and I KNOW that the team with the smurf is gonna win before it even starts.

Like times I've played really well but the smurf shits over our whole team, and sometimes I've played like shit and fed my ass off but the smurf carries anyways. It feels so stupid.

(It's more boosters than smurfs from what I've experiences, especially in mid/low plat).

It isn't just diamond that is screwed up. Autofill is not the issue nearly as much as matchmaking.

Everyone gets trolls and inting players right? Everyone should get them as equally as their opponents while advancing through the same ranks right? But they don't. Legit the last 1.5 weeks, I quit playing my main account because 90% of games had 1-2 trolls/inting players on my team and never someone even remotely half that bad/dumb on the other team. So you try not to tilt after losing 2-3 games straight no matter how well you played and how big a lead you had and how easily your feeding teammate(s) could have fixed their issues. You get over being called toxic for communicating solid advice or shotcalls that are 10x better than anything others are suggesting. You take the rest of the day off, and come back next day. Same crappy teammates doing same dumb things... lose 3 games. Come back again, lose one, win one magical game where you could have gone 0/20/0 in first 10 min and still won the game, then return to losing. Doesn't matter if I played 10 games in one day or 10 games over a week time, matchmaking just wants me to lose on my main so very hard. Like 80% of games are auto losses lately due to people going 0/6/0 apiece bot lane while their top or mid is being camped; this in just laning phase alone. Then you add in mediocre teammates in the 2 other roles, plus they reinforce bot lane's claim you are "toxic" for telling them to play safe and stop forcing fights - FORCING (not being tower dove). Gotta freaking love when you can get camped, still go 3/1/0 in laning with jungle refusing to help you, and being able to do nothing in teamfights or splitpush thanks to teammates.

I find the current ranking system to be a very accurate representation of player skill although being smart is usually a lot more important than having good mechanics but a lot of lower elo players think the opposite is the case so they often think higher elo players with bad mechanics got boosted.

I'd have to disagree. You're relient on 4 other players to win, if you're a very good TEAM player in an Elo that's oriented around solo play you'll platue at a rank you don't belong. My brother wins pretty hard in mid master elo, but when he smurfs with me we barely get a 55% winrate in low diamond. He's very team oriented so in the low diamond elo of "I am the only player that exists split puuuuush!" he loses a ton. I think yeah, if you play enough eventually you can climb even if you don't improve. But that's the issue, you have to dedicate a decent chun of time to just game your game number high ehough to be where you belong.

I think the games really do end up being 50/50 when the system matches all 10 people. What the issue I think is that b/c of LCS balancing you really do need all 5 people to be on board. That doesnt mean playing perfect or anything. But if 1 team has even just 1 guy who afks for 2 minutes, feeds, ints, go perm split push then you're pretty much fucked. And from there its whoever's players keep calm and working together longest. And almost nothing to do with skill or leads.

Another issue, is that it takes general MMR and not-- well this is where it would be impossible for it to do so-- but your MMR by position. You may be a 1 trick top laner or just a top lane main. You might have diamond MMR in top, but you're autofill skill is 1100. I mean everyone knows how to play the game, but the game has become extremely specialized. Players have specific champ pools, positions, runes, masteries etc. God forbid you go in trying to win off general game knowledge.

What I honestly wish they would do- in order to reduce the reliance on teammates and auto-fill, is to just remove support or the 5th man off the map for solo que. I can't think of a single person who mains support or enjoys it that isn't trying to go for challenger ladder to get picked up in LCS. It would massively change up the game but it would finally break the meta, stop forcing someone to learn support when clearly it isn't a popular position at all, and they could give the other roles the increased agency/power in order to better let them grab the game by the horns. It's radical but just a thought.

They need to

  1. Remove Auto Fill
  2. Remove Promos

Why do Promos even exist that blatantly put with teammates that are so much worse than your enemies? LIKE THE OP SAID. Your mmr could be Master+ but you could remain in BRONZE 5 as long as you don't win Promos.

Kinda wish the system between masters and challengers was the same for all the divisions/tiers

The first point pretty much sums up my experience playing in Diamond. Literally every game has 1-2 smurfs in it lol.

I'm d2 right now and I hate the matchmaking and autofill. Matchmaking seems balanced on paper but in game it isn't. When you have a d4-d4-d3-master-challenger and similar on the enemy team, yeah mmr is equal right but when you get into the game. My d4 top won't hold up good against a challenger top. Lost game in champ select. Then with all that, you get a one trick jungler autofilled bot vs. a one trick adc main. Hmmmmm, I wonder who will win right...

It's not just a diamond problem. I fought my way up from bronze to silver and still most of the games are decided by which team gets the troll or the afk or the autofilled one-trick. The only slight difference (or so it sounds from your description) is with a good enough team you can win a 4v5.
