A mage can get fed, and perform really well, getting lots of gold, full build pew pew tons of damage, right?

That mage still dies in 2 hits, and does not have the potential to hard carry a game when their teammates are bad.

A bruiser can do the same amount of damage, but be tankier, have more mobility, and all around hard to kill, while being able to hard carry 1 v 5 flawlessly.

So why in the world would anyone go mage -- the intended "glass cannon" if we are being outdamaged by classes with more survivability and mobility, and don't have single handed carry potential?

Bruisers have to go in in order to deal their damage, opening them up to a lot more damage as well as getting chain cc'd. Mages can do their damage at a range as well as keep enemies at range with their cc.

Except they can’t and it depends on the champion.

It really does depend, generally mages are gonna have more ranged damage, poke, cc etc to compensate for the lack of defenses. There is a pretty steep power budget that bruisers get because they have to also wade through a team’s worth of damage and cc to be effective whereas most mages can pick off while having a front line to protect them.
