How do I play safely around an even lane when I don't have a jungler and they do.

I was playing some good'ol Pantheon top against a Riven. Naturally I was winning early because of the counter and the fact that I can play pantheon fairly well. But I neglected to recall and reset after getting first blood so the Riven teleported back in, I got overconfident and died to wind slash. The lane was dead even but I was still zoning the Riven with a frozen lane near my turret. At this point my jungler was afk in base because his computer died so I was actively trying to stay safe and only push in the lane when I had poked Riven down past half hp. The minions were in the middle of the lane when the Kindred mark appeared around me, I looked at my mini map, saw her in the river and started to walk back to my tower, she cut me off at the bush closest to my tower so i stunned her and threw a spear. But suddenly riven was on top of me and a tower dive started. I flashed Past my tower but wind slash clipped me at max range and picked up the kill. OK that was my mistake i should have just never even bothered to try and burst kindred down. what ever ill just continue to play as I was, safe and slow. but then Kindred ganked again. this time using her ult under my tower to pick up another kill. Then I get ganked by the Yasuo mid and Kindred. she uses her ult once again and they get a fourth kill on me. Its at this point when my Shen jungler reconnects, but its too late because my adc and the enemy riven are already flaming me. So give me the knowledge on what I could have done better. I was also trying to stay defensive yet aggressive with my build by going deaths dance first. Should i have just tried to abandon that and go straight for a dead mans? should i have just hugged my tower and asked for a gank from mid? more wards? I do try to look at my minimap often.
