Not really, the reason while those shields are able to matter so much is because of how much raw DPS an ADC can put out in a very short span nowadays while still be very mobile. In the past, ADCs didn't have mobility spells as much, and what spells they had were often on 15+ second CDs. One of the only exceptions was Ezreal, and he was a notable ADC because he sacrificed much of the ADC's lategame potential for that mobility.
Supports also were very unlikely to have insanely powerful shields. They would absorb a hit, and rarely any more then that.
Mages also had way more burst back then because of much higher AP values and ratios, so they could cover the role of "ADC nuker" for the team, but lower CDR and longer CDs, as well as better MR itemization back then, often made them crumple before tanks. ADCs would be pretty solid at killing tanks even without help, but the tank would still be able to eat that damage for a while before finally going down.
Honestly, the biggest problem with the meta nowadays is how ADCs function as a whole. If you can't remove the ADC instantly from the field, they will instead heal off almost all the damage you dealt in little to no time at all. This puts higher pressure on pure raw 1 shots. With shields as strong as they are, the only class that can burn through them is ADCs. Those same ADCs are the ones most actively defended by those shields because if they go down, your team loses it's ability to take care of the enemy team's shields.
Lifesteal, as it always has been, is one of the biggest balancing problems for ADCs, and even many other AD champs, as a whole. If the damage ADCs took actually stuck to them, it would be far less problematic when the support gives them that life saving shield, because they still would have to back off of the fight most likely. Instead, Lifesteal effectively doubles, triples, or even more, amplify the ADC's raw effective health over a fight.
